Subaru’s bumper-to-bumper warranty, formally the New Vehicle Limited Warranty, covers repairs for defects in materials or workmanship across most of the vehicle’s mechanical and electrical systems for three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first.1Hello Subaru of Temecula. What’s Covered Under Subaru’s Warranty If a factory-installed part fails during normal driving, and the cause is not an accident, neglect, or ordinary wear, an authorized Subaru retailer fixes or replaces it at no charge. There is no deductible.
What the Warranty Covers
Coverage reaches the electrical system, infotainment and interior electronics, climate control, factory-installed technology and safety features, interior trim, and basic mechanical parts.1Hello Subaru of Temecula. What’s Covered Under Subaru’s Warranty2Carter Subaru Shoreline. Understanding Warranty Coverage Power windows that quit, air conditioning that stops cooling, a touchscreen that goes dark within the coverage window: all are warranty candidates if the fault traces to a manufacturing defect.
Genuine Subaru accessories installed before the vehicle’s first retail sale sit under this same warranty. Accessories added later carry a separate one-year warranty regardless of mileage, or the remainder of the bumper-to-bumper period if longer. Labor on those later accessories is covered only when an authorized Subaru retailer did the installation.3Subaru. Subaru Warranty Booklet
The booklet also includes one covered adjustment service during the first 36 months or 36,000 miles, distinct from routine maintenance.4Subaru. Subaru Warranty and Maintenance Booklet
What the Warranty Does Not Cover
“Bumper-to-bumper” is a loose label. Several categories of parts and damage fall outside it:
- Wear items such as tires, air and cabin filters, and brake pads and rotors wear out through normal use and are excluded. Brake pad and shoe linings, clutch linings, and wiper blades are covered under a separate wear-item warranty if they fail from a defect within three years or 36,000 miles.1Hello Subaru of Temecula. - Routine maintenance is the owner’s responsibility: oil changes, filter replacements, fluid top-offs, spark plugs, and tune-ups.4Subaru. Subaru Warranty and Maintenance Booklet
- Cosmetic deterioration, including normal fading of paint and soft trim, is not treated as a defect.4Subaru. Subaru Warranty and Maintenance Booklet
- Surface corrosion that has not perforated a body panel is excluded. Only actual rust-through from the inside out is covered, under a separate perforation warranty.1Hello Subaru of Temecula. What’s Covered Under Subaru’s Warranty
- Damage from collisions, fire, road debris, flooding, hail, extreme temperatures, chemical fallout, tree sap, and bird droppings is excluded.4Subaru. Subaru Warranty and Maintenance Booklet
- Unauthorized modifications or non-approved parts that cause a malfunction can void coverage on the affected components.4Subaru. Subaru Warranty and Maintenance Booklet
- Racing, track use, and abusive driving are explicitly excluded, including on performance models like the BRZ and WRX.1Hello Subaru of Temecula. What’s Covered Under Subaru’s Warranty
- Coverage is voided entirely on vehicles with altered VINs, salvage titles, or tampered odometers.4Subaru. Subaru Warranty and Maintenance Booklet
How to File a Warranty Claim
All warranty work has to be done at an authorized Subaru retailer, and the warranty itself has no deductible. Bring the vehicle in as soon as a problem appears, along with the warranty and maintenance booklet. Keeping your service records matters: neglected maintenance can jeopardize a claim.4Subaru. If the car breaks down and no authorized dealer is within 75 miles, emergency repairs performed elsewhere may be reimbursed up to $500. You have to bring the replaced parts, the paid receipt, and a written description to an authorized dealer within 15 days. If a covered defect leaves the car undriveable, Subaru will pay to tow it to the nearest dealer.4Subaru. Subaru Warranty and Maintenance Booklet
Roadside assistance comes with every new Subaru during the three-year, 36,000-mile window. Towing, jump-starts, gasoline delivery, flat tire changes, and lockout service are available around the clock at 1-800-261-2155.5Subaru of America. Roadside Assistance
Aftermarket Parts and Independent Service
A frequent worry: does an aftermarket part void the warranty? Under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, Subaru cannot deny a claim simply because an aftermarket part is on the vehicle. The dealer has to show that a specific aftermarket part, or the way it was installed, directly caused the failure being claimed. The burden sits with the dealer.4Subaru. Subaru Warranty and Maintenance Booklet An aftermarket stereo will not cost you your powertrain coverage. An aftermarket turbo kit that destroys the engine almost certainly will cost you the engine claim.
The same principle applies to maintenance. You can use an independent shop or do oil changes and filters yourself without losing coverage, provided you follow Subaru’s recommended schedule and keep receipts for parts and labor.4Subaru. Subaru Warranty and Maintenance Booklet
What Keeps Running After 3 Years or 36,000 Miles
The bumper-to-bumper warranty is the shortest layer. Several other factory warranties continue past it, so a failure after the 36-month mark may still be covered under a different plan.
Powertrain: 5 Years or 60,000 Miles
Covers the engine block and internals, cylinder heads and valve trains, the oil pump, pan, timing components, water pump, flywheel, intake and exhaust manifolds, and oil seals and gaskets. On the drivetrain side, the transmission or transaxle case and internals, torque converter, electronic transmission control unit, axle shafts and CV joints (but not the boots), propeller shaft, and wheel bearings are included.4Subaru. Subaru Warranty and Maintenance Booklet
Rust Perforation: 5 Years, Unlimited Miles
Original sheet-metal panels that rust through from the inside out are covered for five years with no mileage limit. Surface rust, stone chips, and corrosion from road salt or environmental exposure are not.4Subaru. Subaru Warranty and Maintenance Booklet
Seat Belts: Lifetime
Seat belts and their functional components are covered for the useful life of the vehicle. Cosmetic fading, electrical components, and the anchor points in the body are excluded.4Subaru. Subaru Warranty and Maintenance Booklet
Emissions: Up to 8 Years or 80,000 Miles
Basic federal emissions defect coverage runs three years or 36,000 miles. Three components get extended coverage for eight years or 80,000 miles: the catalytic converter, the electronic emissions control unit, and the onboard emissions diagnostic device.6U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Frequent Questions Related to Transportation Air Pollution In California and states following California emission standards, the warranty is broader, covering additional emission-related parts for seven years or 70,000 miles.4Subaru. Hybrid and Electric Systems
On plug-in hybrids like the Crosstrek PHEV, the hybrid system (charging, motor, electric drivetrain) is warranted for eight years or 100,000 miles.7AutoNation Subaru West. Subaru Warranty Coverage In California and CARB states, hybrid and EV battery coverage runs 10 years or 150,000 miles.1Hello Subaru of Temecula. What’s Covered Under Subaru’s Warranty For the fully electric Solterra, Subaru guarantees at least 70% battery capacity retention during the eight-year or 100,000-mile warranty period.8Subaru of Ontario. Infotainment Head Unit Extension
Subaru extended coverage on certain infotainment head units (CP1 and Gen 3.1) to eight years or 150,000 miles. The extension addresses black or blank screens, total audio loss, repeated rebooting, and inability to use CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, Bluetooth, or the touchscreen. One head unit replacement is covered, plus one additional software reprogramming if the issue returns.9National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Subaru Infotainment Warranty Extension
If You Buy or Sell a Used Subaru
Factory warranties transfer automatically to subsequent owners. Anyone owning the vehicle during the warranty period is entitled to coverage, and Subaru asks sellers to notify the company and pass the booklet and service records to the new owner.4Subaru.
