A paper tax return is treated as filed on time if the U.S. Postal Service postmark on the envelope shows a date on or before April 15, even if the IRS receives it days later. For the 2025 tax year, that means the envelope must be postmarked by April 15, 2026, a Wednesday. The delivery date does not matter. The postmark date does.
What the Postmark Is and Why It Controls
A postmark is the marking USPS stamps onto your envelope showing where and when the item entered the mail stream, either at a retail counter or through automated equipment at a processing facility. Federal law, 26 U.S.C. ยง 7502, tells the IRS to treat that postmark date as the filing date. A return delivered on April 22 with an April 14 postmark is on time. A return delivered on April 16 with an April 16 postmark is late.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 7502 – Timely Mailing Treated as Timely Filing and Paying
The same rule covers any tax payment mailed with the return.
Three Conditions Have to Be Met
The timely mailing rule only protects you if all three of these are true:
- The postmark shows a date on or before April 15.
- The envelope carries enough postage.
- It’s addressed to the correct IRS office listed in your Form 1040 instructions.
Miss any one, and the rule doesn’t apply, no matter when you actually dropped the envelope in the mail.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 US Code 7502 – Timely Mailing Treated as Timely Filing and Paying If USPS returns your envelope for insufficient postage and you re-mail it on April 16, you’ve missed the deadline. Weigh the envelope if it holds extra schedules or attachments that might push it past one ounce.
How to Actually Get an April 15 Postmark
Dropping the envelope into a blue USPS collection box on April 15 does not guarantee an April 15 postmark. Collection boxes are emptied on posted schedules. If the last pickup already happened, your envelope sits until the next business day and gets postmarked April 16. USPS itself recommends dropping tax returns in collection boxes no later than April 14.3USPS. Mailing Your Tax Return
If you’re mailing on the deadline itself, walk into a post office during business hours on April 15 and ask the clerk to postmark the envelope in front of you. Many post offices close well before midnight, so “postmarked by April 15” really means “handed to a clerk during business hours on April 15” for most filers.3USPS. Mailing Your Tax Return
One year-specific note: when April 15 falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or a legal holiday recognized in the District of Columbia, the deadline shifts to the next business day.4Internal Revenue Service. Proving You Mailed on Time
A plain first-class stamp gets a postmark, but the postmark is on the envelope the IRS holds. If the agency says it never received your return, you have nothing to show. This is where people get burned.
USPS offers three services that put proof in your hands:
- Registered Mail is the strongest option. Registration serves as prima facie evidence of delivery, and the registration date counts as the postmark date. It’s the only method named directly in the statute.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 7502 – Timely Mailing Treated as Timely Filing and Paying
- Certified Mail gives you a mailing receipt and delivery tracking, and the IRS treats it similarly to registered mail for proof-of-mailing purposes.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 7502 – Timely Mailing Treated as Timely Filing and Paying
- A Certificate of Mailing is the cheapest option. It proves the date and time you handed the item to USPS, without delivery tracking.3USPS. Mailing Your Tax Return
If you owe a meaningful amount or expect any dispute, certified mail with a return receipt is worth the few extra dollars. The signed green card comes back to you with the delivery date on it.
Using FedEx, UPS, or DHL Instead
You don’t have to use USPS. The IRS designates specific service levels from FedEx, UPS, and DHL that qualify for the same timely-filing protection. The carrier’s recorded acceptance date functions as the postmark equivalent. Ask for written proof of that date and keep it.6Internal Revenue Service. Private Delivery Services (PDS)
Only certain services qualify. Standard ground shipping from any of these carriers does not. The qualifying options are premium and express tiers such as FedEx First Overnight, Priority Overnight, Standard Overnight, and 2 Day; UPS Next Day Air variants and 2nd Day Air; and DHL Express service levels. Check the current IRS Private Delivery Services list before you ship. Use a service that isn’t on it, and your return counts as filed only when it physically arrives.6Internal Revenue Service. The Electronic Version of a Postmark
If you e-file, the postmark idea translates into a timestamp. When you submit through an authorized e-file provider, the system records when it received your transmission. If that timestamp shows a date and time on or before April 15 in your time zone, your return is timely filed. Your time zone controls, not the provider’s.7eCFR. 26 CFR 301.7502-1 – Timely Mailing of Documents and Payments Treated as Timely Filing and Paying
If Your E-Filed Return Is Rejected
Submit by April 15 and get a rejection for an error, and you have a five-calendar-day grace period to fix and retransmit. For the 2025 tax year, that puts April 20, 2026, as the last day to resend. A return retransmitted within that window keeps its original filing date.8Internal Revenue Service. 3.42.5 IRS E-File of Individual Income Tax Returns
If the rejection can’t be corrected electronically, you can file a paper return. It’s still timely if mailed by the later of the original due date or ten calendar days after the IRS notified you of the rejection.8Internal Revenue Service. 3.42.5 IRS E-File of Individual Income Tax Returns
An Extension Doesn’t Extend the Payment
One boundary worth stating so you don’t rely on the wrong protection: filing Form 4868 gives you an automatic six-month extension to file, pushing the paperwork deadline to October 15.9Internal Revenue Service. File an Extension Through IRS Free File Any tax you owe is still due April 15. Interest and the failure-to-pay penalty start running on April 16 on any unpaid balance, extension or no extension.10Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 653, IRS Notices and Bills, Penalties and Interest Charges If you need the extra time, estimate what you owe and send the payment with Form 4868 or pay electronically by April 15.
What a Late Postmark Costs
Miss the postmark date with a balance owed, and two penalties stack:
- Failure-to-file: 5% of the unpaid tax per month or partial month, up to 25%. If the return is more than 60 days late, the minimum penalty is the lesser of $525 or 100% of the tax owed.11Internal Revenue Service. Failure to File Penalty
- Failure-to-pay: 0.5% of the unpaid tax per month, also capped at 25%, dropping to 0.25% per month if you’re on an installment agreement.10Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 653, IRS Notices and Bills, Penalties and Interest Charges
When both apply in the same month, the failure-to-file penalty is reduced by the failure-to-pay amount, so the combined rate is 5% per month for the first five months, not 5.5%.11Internal Revenue Service. Failure to File Penalty Interest compounds daily on top of both, at the federal short-term rate plus 3%.10Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 653, IRS Notices and Bills, Penalties and Interest Charges
If the IRS owes you a refund, none of these penalties apply. There’s no penalty for filing late when no tax is due. You do have three years to claim a refund before it’s forfeited to the Treasury.12Internal Revenue Service. Taxpayers Who Missed the April Tax Filing Deadline Should File as Soon as Possible
