What Does MyCAA Cover? Payments, Limits, and Approved Schools

MyCAA covers tuition, licensing and certification exam fees, and certain testing costs for eligible military spouses pursuing a professional license, a certification, or an associate degree in a portable career field. The scholarship pays up to $4,000 over a spouse’s lifetime, with a $2,000 cap per fiscal year, and it does not pay for books, fees, living expenses, or degrees above the associate level.1Military OneSource. What the Scholarship Pays For

MyCAA is a tuition benefit at heart. It funds three categories of education: professional licenses, certifications (including certificate programs), and associate degrees tied to a specific career field.3Military OneSource. Alongside tuition, the scholarship covers licensing and certification exam fees, as well as the national testing fees required to earn a credential.5Auburn University MyCAA. MyCAA Grants Credit-by-examination tests such as CLEP exams are covered when they count toward course credits required for an approved degree.6DANTES. CLEP Eligible military spouses can take DANTES-funded CLEP exams at no cost, with both the exam fee and administration fees paid.7College Board. CLEP Military Benefits

Continuing education units to maintain an active license or certification can be funded, but only in a narrow way. The specific classes must be listed in the spouse’s approved Education and Training Plan, and the spouse must already hold a valid license.8ICOHS College. What the Scholarship Won’t Pay For

The exclusion list is long, and it catches many costs that spouses expect a scholarship to handle. MyCAA will not pay for:

The Education and Training Plan Rule

One rule governs everything else: MyCAA only pays for courses and exams explicitly listed in the spouse’s approved Education and Training Plan. A class that would otherwise qualify is not funded if it isn’t on the plan. And the plan cannot be edited once approved, so spouses should list all potential courses and electives during the planning stage. Adding anything later means submitting a new plan.9Veteran.com. Dollar Limits and How the Money Moves

The lifetime maximum is $4,000 per spouse. Within that, no more than $2,000 can be used in a single fiscal year, which runs October 1 through September 30.1Military OneSource. MyCAA Helping Spouses Reach Career Goals Spouses have three years from the start date of their first funded course to use the full $4,000, and unused funds are forfeited after that.13MyCAA Military OneSource. There are also time limits on the programs themselves. Associate degree courses funded through MyCAA cannot exceed 12 months, and license or certificate programs cannot exceed 18 months, with no exceptions.13MyCAA Military OneSource. Spouse FAQ

Combining MyCAA With Other Benefits

Because MyCAA is tuition-only and unused funds are forfeited, spouses often pair it with other aid. Federal financial aid filed through the FAFSA can be used alongside MyCAA for the same program, and transferred Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits can be applied at the same time. A practical sequence is to apply MyCAA to tuition first and use GI Bill benefits for the fees, books, and living costs MyCAA won’t touch.12ICOHS College. How Does MyCAA Work Some spouses use MyCAA to earn a certificate or license first and then pursue a full degree with transferred GI Bill benefits later.17InterCoast Colleges. MyCAA is a separate benefit from Tuition Assistance, which is for service members, and from the GI Bill transfer, which covers up to 36 months of education through the graduate level. MyCAA is narrower, but it doesn’t require the service member to transfer benefits or take on additional service obligations.18Columbia Southern University. Military Spouse Education Benefits

Approved Schools and Portable Careers

The field of study must be a portable career, meaning one whose skills transfer across geographic locations as a military family relocates. Common qualifying fields include pharmacy technician, medical billing and coding, dental assistant, veterinary assistant, graphic design, and human resources.19Ed2Go.
