Mobile phone insurance generally covers accidental damage (drops, cracked screens, liquid exposure), theft, mechanical and electrical breakdowns after the manufacturer’s warranty ends, and, on many plans, a lost device. What it does not cover is just as consistent: normal wear and tear, cosmetic scratches, software problems, unauthorized repairs, and accessories like chargers and cases. The exact mix depends on who issued the policy, so the useful question is not just what is covered in general but what is covered under your specific plan.
The Core Perils Most Plans Cover
Across carriers, manufacturers, and independent insurers, policies share a common set of covered events.
- Accidental physical damage. Drops and spills are the single most frequent claim type, accounting for roughly 44% of all repair claims according to one insurer’s data.1Progressive. Is Cell Phone Insurance Worth It
- Cracked screens, often at a reduced deductible or no cost. AT&T’s Protect Advantage, Verizon’s Wireless Phone Protection, and T-Mobile’s Protection 360 all advertise $0 front-screen repairs for eligible smartphones.2AT&T. Device Protection3Verizon. - Liquid and water damage. Submersion and spills are standard on most carrier and manufacturer plans, though some budget or UK-market policies carve them out.5Progressive. Cell Phone Insurance
- Theft. Nearly every plan covers a stolen device, but filing rules are strict. Most insurers require a police report within 48 hours.6Insurify. Best Cell Phone Insurance
- Loss. This is where plans diverge. AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile’s top-tier plans cover a lost phone, while some third-party insurers like Progressive explicitly exclude loss.7Insurify. Phone Insurance Coverage
- Mechanical and electrical breakdown. Once the manufacturer’s one-year warranty expires, many plans pick up hardware failures like a dead charging port or an unresponsive touchscreen.8T-Mobile. Protection 360 and Device Protection
- Other perils, including power surges from lightning, fire, and natural disasters like floods on some policies.5Progressive. Cell Phone Insurance
One detail buyers often miss: a replacement device may not be new. Asurion, which administers insurance programs for AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and others, says replacements “could be new or refurbished and may contain original or non-original replacement parts,” and that if a specific make and model is out of stock, the replacement may be “a different brand, model or color.”9Asurion. What Is Not Covered
Exclusions are where most denials come from. Every mainstream plan excludes some version of the following.
- Normal wear and tear. Gradual degradation from everyday use, including a battery that slowly loses capacity, is almost universally excluded outside of specific battery-replacement benefits.7Insurify. Phone Insurance Coverage
- Cosmetic damage. Dents, scratches, and scuffs that don’t affect functionality won’t trigger a payout.7Insurify. Phone Insurance Coverage
- Intentional damage and neglect. AppleCare+ explicitly excludes “reckless, abusive, willful, or intentional conduct.”12Consumer Reports. Is AppleCare Plus Worth Buying for Your iPhone
- Software issues and viruses. Malware, bugs, and operating-system glitches sit outside the scope of hardware insurance.5Progressive. Cell Phone Insurance
- Unauthorized repairs and modifications. If the phone was serviced somewhere the insurer or manufacturer doesn’t recognize, future claims can be voided.5Progressive. Cell Phone Insurance
- Pre-existing damage. Damage that existed before the policy took effect is not covered. Many plans require enrollment within 30 to 60 days of purchase, and some require a visual inspection if you enroll later.13Insurify. T-Mobile Phone Insurance
- Accessories. Chargers, cases, earbuds, and similar add-ons are generally outside phone-specific policies.13Insurify. T-Mobile Phone Insurance
How Coverage Changes by Plan Type
Carrier Plans
Carrier plans tend to be the broadest, bundling theft, loss, damage, and post-warranty coverage into one plan. AT&T and Verizon advertise unlimited total claims, though each individual claim is capped at $3,000 to $3,500 in device value.14AT&T. Protect Advantage Program Changes 202515Verizon. Manufacturer Plans
AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss allows two theft or loss incidents per 12 months, with unlimited accidental-damage repairs.12Consumer Reports. Samsung Care Plus Both must typically be purchased within 60 days of buying the device.
Third-Party Insurers
Independent insurers like Akko sell phone-only policies that can suit used or secondhand devices. Coverage scope is narrower in important ways: Progressive, for instance, excludes loss altogether.7Insurify. Phone Insurance Coverage
Credit Card Cell Phone Protection
Some credit cards include cell phone protection as a cardholder perk, but you must pay your monthly wireless bill with the eligible card to activate it.16NerdWallet. Cell Phone Protection Becoming Standard Credit Card Perk Coverage is narrower than a carrier plan. Most card benefits cover damage and theft but not lost phones, and they rarely allow more than two claims per year.17CNBC Select. How Credit Card Cell Phone Protection Works The Wells Fargo Autograph card, for example, provides up to $600 per claim with a $25 deductible, up to two paid claims per 12-month period, and does not cover phones that “mysteriously disappear.”18Wells Fargo. Autograph Visa Credit Card This coverage is typically secondary, kicking in only after other policies like homeowners or renters insurance.19Capital One. Credit Cards With Cell Phone Protection
Homeowners and Renters Insurance
Your home or renters policy already treats your phone as personal property, but the protection is narrow. It covers theft, fire, vandalism, and other named perils, but not accidental damage like drops and spills, and not lost or misplaced devices.20Policygenius. Does Renters Insurance Cover Cellphones21U.S. News. Does Insurance Cover Cellphones Deductibles commonly sit at $500 or $1,000, so most phone repairs cost less than the deductible, and filing can raise your premium or cost you a claims-free discount. Standard policies may also pay the “actual cash value” of the phone, which accounts for depreciation, unless you carry a replacement-cost rider.
What You Pay When Coverage Kicks In
Covered does not mean free. Every plan charges a deductible per claim, and the amount varies by the type of claim and the value of the device. Screen repairs are the cheapest, and theft or loss replacements are the most expensive.
For a high-end smartphone roughly in the $800 to $1,200 range:
- Screen repair: $0 at T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon, and Samsung Care+ with Theft and Loss; $29 at AppleCare+ and Samsung Care+ standard; $29 at Akko.4T-Mobile. Phone Protection Plans22Apple. AppleCare Fees and Deductibles
- Other accidental damage: around $99 at T-Mobile (Protection 360), AppleCare+, Samsung Care+, and Verizon.23Insurify. Cell Phone Insurance Plans
- Theft or loss replacement: $149 at AppleCare+, $99 to $249 at T-Mobile depending on device tier, up to $275 at AT&T (Tier 4), and $99 to $279 at Verizon.24Flipsy. T-Mobile Phone Insurance14AT&T. Protect Advantage Program Changes 202522Apple. AppleCare Fees and Deductibles
Budget devices come with much smaller deductibles. T-Mobile’s lowest tier, for devices worth up to $150, carries a $10 deductible for any claim type.24Flipsy. T-Mobile Phone Insurance
Why Covered Claims Still Get Denied
An active policy does not guarantee a payout. The most common denial reasons are missing the filing deadline, insufficient documentation (forgetting to include a police report for a theft claim, for example), coverage that lapsed because of a missed payment, and policy exclusions the owner wasn’t aware of.6Insurify. Best Cell Phone Insurance Insurers may also deny claims they suspect are fraudulent or that appear to result from neglect rather than an accident.7Insurify. Phone Insurance Coverage
Liquid damage is a particularly contentious area. Most iPhones and many Android devices contain liquid contact indicators that turn red when exposed to water. Apple’s standard warranty does not cover liquid damage, and an activated indicator can put the consumer at a disadvantage when filing a warranty claim.25Apple. Liquid Contact Indicators in iPhone and iPod A class-action lawsuit previously alleged that Apple’s indicators are overly sensitive, producing false positives from humidity alone.26Worth Ave. Group. iPhone Liquid Contact Indicator A dedicated phone insurance policy that explicitly covers liquid damage avoids this issue, but confirm your plan includes it before you need it.
If a claim is denied and you think the decision was wrong, review the denial letter against your actual policy terms. You can appeal in writing with additional documentation. If that fails, you can file a formal complaint with your state’s department of insurance, which has regulatory authority over insurers.27NAIC. How To File a Complaint Against Insurance Carriers State departments investigate complaints and can order corrective action when an insurer violated the law or the policy’s own terms.28Illinois Department of Insurance.
