Mercari fees break down into two main charges: buyers pay a 3.6% Buyer Protection fee on the item price plus shipping, and sellers pay a 10% selling fee on the same combined amount. Sales tax, shipping costs, and a handful of situational fees can push the total higher. The current structure took effect on January 6, 2025, replacing an older system where sellers absorbed a 10% commission and buyers paid a smaller payment processing fee.1Mercari. Changes to Our Fee Structure
What Buyers Pay
The Buyer Protection fee is 3.6% of the item price plus any buyer-paid shipping. It’s built into the total at checkout, so on your bank statement it appears as part of the single Mercari charge rather than a separate line.2Mercari. Fees on Mercari
If you see the older $0.50 plus 2.9% payment processing fee instead, you bought from a listing created before January 6, 2025, that the seller hasn’t updated. Those legacy fees fade out as sellers edit or relist their inventory.2Mercari. Fees on Mercari
Sales Tax
Mercari acts as a marketplace facilitator and collects sales tax in 46 states and the District of Columbia. The rate is based on the combined state and local rate at your delivery address, and it shows on your Mercari receipt as its own line item even though it rolls into the single charge on your bank statement.3Mercari Help. Sales Tax Policy
Colorado buyers also pay a $0.28 Retail Delivery Fee on every transaction shipped in-state, which Mercari collects on top of any applicable sales tax. Some items are exempt depending on state rules, and Mercari accepts federal and state-issued exemption certificates if you submit the paperwork.3Mercari Help. Sales Tax Policy
What Sellers Pay
Sellers pay a 10% selling fee on the item price plus buyer-paid shipping for any listing created or updated on or after January 6, 2025. The fee is deducted from your balance automatically when the transaction completes. Older listings that haven’t been updated still run under the previous structure, but Mercari has been transitioning inventory to the new one.2Mercari. Fees on Mercari
Weight and Oversize Adjustments
Prepaid Mercari labels are priced by weight class and carrier. When the carrier finds the package is heavier or larger than the label bought, the difference is billed back to Mercari and deducted from the seller’s earnings.
If the actual weight falls into a higher Mercari label tier, you pay the difference between the tier you selected and the correct one. If the package exceeds any weight class Mercari sells a label for, the adjustment is calculated at residential retail rates for zone 6, minus what your original label cost. Packages over 150 pounds trigger a flat $2,500 fee.4Mercari. Why Was I Charged for an Overweight or Oversized Package These deductions are difficult to contest without evidence, so weigh and measure before printing the label.
Cancellation Fees
If a seller cancels after a buyer has paid but before the transaction completes, Mercari can charge a cancellation fee of 5% of the item price, capped at $25. It covers transaction fees or shipping labels already generated. Every seller-initiated cancellation also shows on your profile.5Mercari. Cancelations on Mercari
Authentication
Mercari charges a flat $5 to have a third-party expert verify an eligible designer item. A physical certificate of authenticity costs another $10.6Mercari. What Are Authenticate Fees and Certificates7Mercari. What Is Mercari Authenticate The $5 fee comes out of the seller’s payout, so buyers don’t see a separate charge. Authentication is optional for eligible items under a certain price and mandatory above it; the cutoff depends on the category and brand, and Mercari flags the requirement at listing time.
Getting Your Money Out
Standard ACH direct deposit to a bank account is now free. Mercari eliminated the previous $2 fee in the January 2025 overhaul, though you’re limited to one ACH withdrawal per day.1Mercari. Changes to Our Fee Structure
Instant Pay sends funds to an eligible debit card for a flat $3 per withdrawal, once per day, up to $600 per month. The $3 is flat, not a percentage, so it’s the same whether you cash out $10 or $600.8Mercari. Getting Paid
Refunds of Fees on Returns
Mercari treats sales as final, and fee refunds are conditional. The 3.6% Buyer Protection fee may not be refunded on a return, depending on the reason. A return based on a damaged item or a listing that misrepresented the product has a stronger case for a fee refund than a change-of-mind return. The same conditional policy applies to the legacy payment processing fee on pre-2025 listings.2Mercari. Fees on Mercari
1099-K Reporting for Sellers
Mercari reports sales to the IRS on Form 1099-K if you exceed $20,000 in gross payments and more than 200 transactions in a calendar year. Both conditions must be met, so a seller with $25,000 in sales but only 150 transactions wouldn’t get a 1099-K. The One, Big, Beautiful Bill retroactively reinstated this threshold, reversing earlier plans to drop it to $600.9Internal Revenue Service. Not getting a 1099-K doesn’t mean the income is tax-free. Profits from selling items for more than you paid are taxable regardless of whether Mercari files the form. Mercari may also ask sellers to verify identity or provide a Social Security number once sales reach certain levels, even below the 1099-K threshold.
When a Charge Isn’t Actually a Fee
Sometimes a Mercari entry on your bank statement isn’t a real charge at all. When you attempt a purchase, your bank places a temporary authorization hold to confirm the card works and has funds. If the transaction is canceled or doesn’t complete within 24 hours, the hold drops off within about five business days on its own. During that window it can look identical to a completed charge, which is why buyers sometimes think they’ve been double-billed.10Mercari. How Long Does It Take to Get a Refund
If a charge is still there after that and looks wrong, start with Mercari’s Help Center and submit an inquiry tied to the order. Going straight to a credit card chargeback can result in your Mercari account being suspended or banned, since the platform treats chargebacks as a policy violation and may hold your remaining balance to cover the loss.11Mercari. Prohibited Conduct You still have the legal right to dispute a charge with your card issuer within 60 days of the billing statement date; just know that using it likely costs you the account.
