What Does Hyundai Powertrain Warranty Cover? Parts, Exclusions, Claims

Hyundai’s powertrain warranty covers the repair or replacement of major engine, transmission, and drivetrain components for 10 years or 100,000 miles from the original in-service date, whichever comes first. The 10-year coverage applies only to the original purchaser of a 2004 or newer vehicle; a second owner’s powertrain protection drops to whatever remains of the 5-year/60,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty.1Hyundai USA. Engine, Transmission, and Drivetrain Parts Covered

Hyundai’s official page describes the coverage as applying to “selected engine and transmission/transaxle components.” Dealer warranty handbooks spell out what that means in practice.1Hyundai USA. America’s Best Warranty

On the engine side, coverage includes the cylinder block and heads with all internal parts, the intake manifold, the timing chain or belt (with its cover, gears, and tensioner), the oil pump, water pump, fuel pump, flywheel, valve covers, oil pan, engine mounts, and the engine control computer. Seals and gaskets for any of those covered parts are included. Factory-installed turbocharger and supercharger assemblies are also covered, down to the housing, internal parts, boost valves, wastegates, intercoolers, and blow-off valves.2Route 1 Hyundai. On the transmission side, the warranty covers the transmission case and all internal parts, the torque converter, clutch cover, transmission mounts, the transfer case and its internal parts, the transmission cooler, metal cooler lines, and electronic control units.2Route 1 Hyundai. Drivetrain coverage depends on the drive configuration. Front-wheel-drive vehicles have their final drive housing and internal parts, axle shafts, drive shaft, constant velocity joints, and front hub bearings covered. Rear-wheel-drive vehicles have their axle housing and internals, propeller shaft, U-joints, axle shafts, bearings, and supports covered. All-wheel-drive transfer cases are covered as well. Seals and gaskets throughout the drivetrain are included.2Route 1 Hyundai. Hyundai Lifetime Warranty Information

What’s Not Covered

The warranty applies to defects in materials or factory workmanship. It does not pick up damage from outside causes or ordinary wear. Routine maintenance such as oil changes, filters, and tire rotations is the owner’s responsibility. Wear items like brake pads, wiper blades, clutch discs, belts, bulbs, and fuses sit outside powertrain coverage entirely and are covered separately for just 1 year or 12,000 miles.1Hyundai USA. America’s Best Warranty

Damage from neglect, misuse, or environmental events is excluded. That includes skipped scheduled maintenance, use of the wrong fluids, overloading, racing, extreme off-roading in a vehicle not designed for it, and flood or fire damage. Aftermarket modifications affecting warranty-covered systems can lead to denied claims, and a repair using a non-genuine Hyundai part may not be covered if that non-OEM part caused the failure.4Boucher Hyundai. Hyundai Warranty Guide

Cosmetic damage such as dents, scratches, and paint chips from road debris is not a powertrain issue and is not covered. Tires and fluids are also excluded.5Safford Hyundai Manassas. Hyundai’s 10-Year Warranty Explained: What’s Actually Covered

Vehicles used commercially, including taxis, delivery vehicles, and rentals, are excluded from the 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain coverage entirely.1Hyundai USA. America’s Best Warranty

Original Owner Versus Subsequent Owner

This boundary matters more than any other for buyers. The 10-year/100,000-mile term is only for the original purchaser of a 2004 or newer Hyundai. Once the vehicle changes hands, the new owner’s powertrain coverage reverts to whatever is left of the 5-year/60,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty, measured from the original in-service date. Hyundai’s published materials describe no formal administrative step to transfer that remaining 5-year coverage.1Hyundai USA. America’s Best Warranty

Hybrid and electric vehicle battery and system components are the exception: that 10-year/100,000-mile coverage carries over to subsequent owners.1Hyundai USA. America’s Best Warranty

Keeping the Warranty Valid

Hyundai requires the vehicle be maintained according to the manufacturer’s recommended service schedule. Hitting the exact mileage for every service is not required; performing the work “reasonably close” to scheduled intervals is acceptable. Skipping maintenance or using incorrect fluids can give a dealer grounds to deny a claim.6Giambalvo Hyundai. What Would Void Vehicle Warranty

Keep receipts and detailed records for every service, whether performed by a dealer, an independent shop, or yourself. Each record should show the date, mileage, work performed, and parts used. These are your proof if a claim is questioned.6Giambalvo Hyundai. What Would Void Vehicle Warranty

A few conditions void the warranty outright: a salvage title (the vehicle has been declared a total loss), an altered odometer, and severe environmental damage such as flood or tornado damage.6Giambalvo Hyundai. What Would Void Vehicle Warranty

Independent Shops and Aftermarket Parts

Federal law offers meaningful protection. Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, Hyundai cannot void the warranty or deny a claim simply because an aftermarket part was installed or because maintenance was performed somewhere other than a Hyundai dealership. If Hyundai wants to deny a claim on those grounds, the burden is on the manufacturer to show that the specific non-OEM part or service directly caused the failure. A dealer who tells you only dealership service or OEM parts keep the warranty intact is making a claim that may violate this federal law.7Auto Care Association. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act

Filing a Powertrain Warranty Claim

Warranty repairs have to be done at an authorized Hyundai dealership. Use the dealer locator on the Hyundai USA site to find one. When you call, have your name, vehicle identification number (VIN), current mileage, and a description of the problem on hand.1Hyundai USA. America’s Best Warranty

Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Components

Hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric Hyundais carry a separate 10-year/100,000-mile warranty on battery and system components, and this one transfers to subsequent owners.1Hyundai USA. America’s Best Warranty

Covered components:

  • Hybrid/electric battery, guaranteed not to degrade below 70 percent of its original capacity during the warranty period
  • Hybrid starter/generator
  • Hybrid power control unit
  • Automatic transmission, including the traction motor

This coverage sits alongside the standard powertrain warranty and addresses the electric-drive parts that replace or supplement a conventional engine and transmission.8Hyundai Service. Warranty

Extended Warranty for Theta II and Nu Engine Vehicles

Several Hyundai models with Theta II and Nu engines have been subject to recalls and a class action settlement over a manufacturing defect that can cause connecting rod bearing failure, with risk of engine seizure or fire. The settlement in In re: Hyundai and Kia Engine Litigation II received final court approval in April 2024 and extended the powertrain warranty on affected vehicles to 15 years or 150,000 miles.9Hyundai Engine Info. Hyundai and Kia Engine Litigation II Settlement

The extended coverage addresses engine short block or long block damage caused by connecting rod bearing failure. It applies to original and subsequent owners for personal use. Commercial entities and salvaged vehicles are excluded. In most cases, the vehicle must have had Hyundai’s Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) software update installed before any engine failure. Vehicles already subject to Hyundai Recalls 198 and 209 are exempt from the KSDS requirement.10Hyundai Auto Service. Powertrain Extended Warranty
