On a U.S. passport, FNU means “First Name Unknown.” It’s a placeholder the government inserts in the given-name field when your passport or visa application shows only a single name, most commonly because your home country’s naming convention doesn’t split names into a given name and a family name. FNU is not part of your actual name, but once it’s printed on your passport it tends to follow you onto nearly every other document you carry.
Why FNU Ends Up on Your Passport
International Civil Aviation Organization standards require that a one-word name be printed in the surname field of a passport. This is overwhelmingly a naming-convention issue, not an error. Many cultures, particularly in parts of South Asia, the Middle East, and Central Asia, don’t split names the way Western systems expect. An Afghan man named Waheed, for example, may go by that single name his entire life. When he applies for a U.S. visa, the system slots Waheed into the surname field and stamps FNU where a first name would go. In rarer cases, FNU appears because of a data-entry mistake during passport or visa processing.
Booking Flights When Your Passport Shows FNU
TSA’s Secure Flight program requires airlines to collect your name exactly as it appears on the government ID you’ll use at the checkpoint. If your passport shows your single name in the surname field and FNU as the given name, airline reservation systems generally expect you to book the same way: single name as the last name, FNU as the first name. Resist the urge to leave the first-name field blank or type your actual name in both fields. Either move can trigger a Secure Flight mismatch and extra screening at the airport.
Some online booking engines won’t accept a three-letter abbreviation in the first-name field. Calling the airline directly is usually the fastest fix. Agents can enter the name in whatever format their system requires.
How FNU Spreads to Your Other Documents
The real trouble with FNU isn’t the passport itself. It’s that every subsequent U.S. document builds on the name your immigration records show, and FNU rides along.
Social Security
The Social Security Administration requires both a first name and a last name, and the name on your SSN card generally must match your immigration document.3Social Security Administration. That choice creates problems later, because other agencies and private companies then treat FNU as your literal legal first name.
Employment Verification
Every U.S. employer must complete Form I-9. If you have a single name, the I-9 instructions tell you to enter it in the Last Name field and write “Unknown” in the First Name field.5U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Driver’s Licenses and Banks
State DMVs and financial institutions each have their own name-field requirements, and none of them were designed with single-name people in mind. A bank that sees FNU on a government ID may enter it as your legal first name, which then shows up on checks, credit reports, and account statements. Downstream effects include background-check failures, mismatched credit files, and difficulty proving that records under “FNU Waheed” and “Waheed” belong to the same person.

How you get FNU off your passport depends on whether you’re fixing a mistake or changing your legal name.
Correcting a Government Error
If FNU appeared because of a printing or data mistake and your application documents clearly show a given name, the State Department will correct the error at no charge using Form DS-5504 as long as your passport is still valid.6U.S. Department of State. Adopting a Given Name Within One Year
If you legally adopt a given name through a court order and your passport was issued less than one year ago, you can update it using Form DS-5504 with no passport fee. Name Change After One Year
If more than a year has passed since your passport was issued or your name was legally changed, you’ll renew by mail using Form DS-82 (if eligible) or apply in person using Form DS-11. Both require your current passport, a certified name-change document such as a court order, a color photo, and applicable fees based on your age.6U.S. Department of State. How Long It Takes
Name corrections and changes go through the same queue as other passport applications. Routine processing runs roughly six to eight weeks. Expedited processing runs two to three weeks at the agency, plus mailing time in both directions. Fall applications generally move faster than spring and summer ones.
Keeping a Single Name Without FNU
Not everyone with FNU on their documents wants to invent a given name. If you genuinely have only one name and want your U.S. passport to reflect that, the State Department’s own rules support you. ICAO standards require one-word names to be printed in the surname field, and the Foreign Affairs Manual instructs consular officers to record only the surname for applicants who have no given name. A U.S. passport with a blank given-name field can still create the same booking and identification snags as one showing FNU. The difference is that a blank field is honest about the situation rather than making FNU look like your actual name. If you already hold a visa that shows FNU and then obtain a passport without it, the mismatch between visa and passport can itself cause confusion. Aligning all your documents at the same time, including a new visa if applicable, avoids that.
Cleaning Up Other Records
Fixing the passport is only the first step. Every other document that currently shows FNU needs to catch up, and the order matters. Start with Social Security, because many other agencies verify your name against SSA records. Bring your corrected passport and any court order to an SSA office to request a replacement card.3Social Security Administration. If you hold a visa that still shows FNU, apply for a replacement visa to bring everything into line.
