On an IRS tax refund, “extracted for payment” means the IRS has finished processing your return, locked in the refund amount, and handed payment instructions to the U.S. Treasury for disbursement. On your account transcript, the same event appears as Transaction Code 846, “Refund of Overpayment,” which removes the approved amount from your tax account so it can be paid out.1IRS. Section 8A – Master File Codes Once you see this status, the internal review is over and the money is in the payment pipeline. A few mechanical steps still stand between that status and the deposit or check reaching you.
What the Status Actually Confirms
By the time a refund is extracted for payment, the IRS has completed its math checks, identity verification, and error review. The amount is fixed. The date printed next to TC 846 on your transcript is the date the IRS plans to send the payment, not the date you will receive it.1IRS. Section 8A – Master File Codes
The “Where’s My Refund?” tool on irs.gov and the IRS2Go app do not use transcript codes. They show three plain statuses: Return Received, Refund Approved, and Refund Sent.2Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Refund? “Extracted for payment” and TC 846 line up with the shift from Refund Approved to Refund Sent, so if you are watching both, they should update within roughly the same window.
Who Actually Sends the Money
The IRS does not cut refund payments itself. It transmits the payment file to the Bureau of the Fiscal Service, a separate arm of the U.S. Department of the Treasury that handles federal disbursements. The Bureau routes direct deposits through the Automated Clearing House (ACH) network and prints paper checks. Direct deposit refunds are disbursed from the Bureau’s Kansas City Regional Financial Center.3Bureau of the Fiscal Service, U.S. Department of the Treasury. Tax Refund Frequently Asked Questions That handoff between two agencies is why a short lag between “sent” and “received” is normal.
When the Money Should Arrive
Direct Deposit
The IRS generally issues refunds within 21 days of receiving an e-filed return.4Internal Revenue Service. Processing Status for Tax Forms After extraction, direct deposits usually post within a few business days. Some banks credit the account as soon as the ACH file arrives; others wait for the official settlement date. Your bank sets the exact timing.
Paper Check
A paper check has to be printed by the Treasury and mailed. Plan on two to three weeks after “extracted for payment” appears before the check reaches your mailbox.
Holidays and Weekends
ACH payments do not process on federal holidays or weekends. If your scheduled deposit date falls on one, the payment moves to the next business day. During the 2026 filing season, Martin Luther King Jr. Day (January 19), Presidents Day (February 16), and Memorial Day (May 25) all sit inside the peak refund window.5Federal Reserve Financial Services. Why the Amount May Be Less Than Expected
Before releasing your refund, the Bureau of the Fiscal Service runs it through the Treasury Offset Program (TOP). TOP matches federal payments against people who owe past-due debts to federal or state agencies and reduces the payment accordingly.6Bureau of the Fiscal Service. Treasury Offset Program Under 26 U.S.C. ยง 6402, refunds can be applied, in priority order, to past-due child support, debts owed to federal agencies (such as defaulted student loans), state income tax debts, and unemployment compensation overpayments.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6402 – Authority to Make Credits or Refunds
If the IRS itself applies your refund to a federal tax you owe, you will receive a CP49 notice explaining what happened.8Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your CP49 Notice For a non-tax offset, the Bureau of the Fiscal Service sends a separate notice naming the creditor agency and the amount taken.
Disputing an Offset
Bureau staff cannot discuss the underlying debt, cancel an offset, or negotiate a payment. If you think the offset is wrong, contact the agency that referred the debt.9Bureau of the Fiscal Service. Injured Spouse Relief
If you filed jointly and your refund was taken for a debt that belongs only to your spouse, you can file Form 8379 (Injured Spouse Allocation) to recover your share. You can send it with the original return if you expect an offset, or after receiving the CP49 notice. The deadline is three years from the return’s due date (with extensions) or two years from the date the tax was paid, whichever is later.11Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 8379
Interest if the Refund Is Late
Under the 45-day rule, the IRS has 45 days from the later of the return’s due date or the date it received the return to issue a refund without owing interest. Miss that window and interest accrues from the original due date until the refund goes out.12Internal Revenue Service. Overpayment Interest For the first quarter of 2026, the rate on individual overpayments is 7 percent per year.13Internal Revenue Service. Quarterly Interest Rates The IRS adds any qualifying interest automatically. That interest is taxable income in the year you receive it.
If the Refund Doesn’t Show Up
Missing Direct Deposit
Wait at least five days past the scheduled date before acting. A wrong routing or account number is the usual culprit. When a deposit is rejected, the Bureau contacts the bank to sort it out. If you receive a CP53E notice about a rejected deposit and do nothing, the IRS reissues the refund as a paper check after about six weeks.14Taxpayer Advocate Service. Missing Paper Check
If six weeks have passed since the IRS mailed the check, you can start a refund trace.15Taxpayer Advocate Service. Lost or Stolen Refund If you filed single, head of household, or married filing separately, call the IRS Refund Hotline at 800-829-1954 or start the trace through “Where’s My Refund?” on irs.gov. If you filed married filing jointly, complete Form 3911 (Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund) and mail it in.
Once a trace is open, the Bureau of the Fiscal Service investigates. If the check was never cashed, a replacement usually goes out in about six weeks. If the check was cashed, the Bureau sends a claims package to complete.16Internal Revenue Service. 21.4.2 Refund Trace and Limited Payability
