On a Capital One card, “cover purchases” is a rewards redemption option that lets you apply your miles or cash back to a specific recent transaction on your statement, offsetting all or part of its cost. Rather than taking a check or a generic balance reduction, you pick an individual charge and erase it with rewards you’ve already earned.
How It Works
You log in to your Capital One account online or through the mobile app, open the rewards section, and choose the cover-purchases option. Capital One pulls up a list of eligible recent transactions. Pick one, decide how many rewards to apply, and confirm. A credit posts to your account against that specific charge, usually within one to three business days.
This is different from a plain statement credit. A statement credit lowers your overall balance without pointing at any particular transaction. With cover purchases, the credit is tied to the charge you selected, so your statement shows the original purchase offset by a rewards redemption.
What You Can Cover Depends on Your Card
The scope of eligible transactions depends on the type of Capital One card you hold.
On cash-back cards such as Quicksilver, the feature is labeled “Cover a recent purchase,” and it isn’t restricted by category. You can use cash back to reimburse yourself for everyday spending: groceries, clothing, electronics, home improvement, and so on.
On travel rewards cards (Venture X, Venture, VentureOne), the feature is labeled “Cover travel purchases,” and the charge has to be one Capital One classifies as travel. Ten merchant categories qualify:
- Airlines
- Bus lines
- Car rental agencies
- Cruise lines
- Hotels
- Limousine services
- Rail lines
- Taxi cabs
- Timeshares
- Travel agents, including online travel agencies such as Expedia and Costco Travel
Things that don’t obviously fit, like museum tickets or guided tours, can still qualify if you book them through an online travel agency, because the charge then codes under the travel-agent category. A ticket bought directly from Disney, by contrast, codes as entertainment and doesn’t qualify.
The 90-Day Window and Minimums
For travel rewards cards, a purchase has to have posted within the last 90 days to appear on the eligible list. Once that window closes, you can’t go back and cover it. There is no minimum redemption amount and no minimum number of miles. You can apply as little as one mile to a charge.
What Your Miles Are Worth
When you cover a travel purchase, each mile is worth one cent. Ten thousand miles knocks $100 off a hotel bill. That’s the same rate you get booking new travel through the Capital One Travel portal, and it’s roughly double what you’d get taking the miles as cash back, which comes out to about half a cent per mile. Transferring to airline and hotel partners averages higher, around 1.85 cents per mile, though actual value depends heavily on the specific booking.
Covering a Purchase vs. Booking Through the Portal
Capital One gives travel cardholders two ways to put miles toward a trip at the one-cent rate: book inside the Capital One Travel portal, or book directly with the airline or hotel and then cover the charge afterward. The redemption value is identical, but the practical differences matter.
Booking direct keeps the reservation tied to your loyalty account with the airline or hotel. You earn elite-qualifying nights or segments, keep access to perks like upgrades and late checkout, and accumulate points toward status. Third-party portal bookings often strip those benefits. You also earn Capital One miles on the initial swipe and then use existing miles to reimburse yourself, which effectively lets you earn and redeem on the same trip.
The portal has its own pull. Venture X earns a higher rate on hotels and rental cars booked through it, and the portal offers price-match and price-drop protection along with optional “Cancel For Any Reason” coverage on flights. If you don’t carry elite status anywhere, the portal’s bonus earning can outweigh the loyalty perks you’d be giving up.
How to Redeem
The process is the same on the website and in the mobile app.
- Log in and open your rewards balance. On desktop, click the rewards display box and then “View Rewards.” In the app, tap your credit card to see the balance.
- Choose “Cover purchases,” or “Cover travel purchases” on a Venture-family card. A list of eligible recent transactions appears.
- Select the transaction you want to offset. You can apply enough rewards to cover the full charge or just part of it.
- Confirm. The credit typically posts within one to three business days.
You can also handle the redemption by calling the Capital One Rewards Center.
Taxes
Using rewards to cover a purchase doesn’t create a tax event. The IRS generally treats credit card rewards earned through spending as rebates rather than income, whether you take them as cash back, a statement credit, or a purchase reimbursement. The exception is rewards received without a spending requirement, such as some sign-up or referral bonuses, which can be treated differently.
