ChexSystems is a nationwide specialty consumer reporting agency that tracks how people manage checking and savings accounts, and most banks pull a report from it before deciding whether to open a new account for you. What ChexSystems does, in practical terms, is give banks a five-year window into your deposit-account history: bounced checks, unpaid overdrafts, involuntary closures, and suspected fraud. A negative record can block you from opening a standard bank account until the entry ages off.
What ChexSystems Tracks
ChexSystems is classified as a “nationwide specialty consumer reporting agency” under the Fair Credit Reporting Act at 15 U.S.C. ยง 1681.1Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. A Summary of Your Rights Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act The “specialty” label matters. Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion track credit card balances and loan payments. ChexSystems tracks deposit accounts: how you handle checking and savings, whether you overdraw, and whether the bank had to close you out.
Banks and credit unions feed the database, and they query it when someone applies for a new account. Most people never hear of ChexSystems until a bank denies their application and points them to the agency. Alongside the report, ChexSystems generates a consumer score from 100 to 899, where a higher number signals lower risk.2ChexSystems. Request ChexSystems Consumer Score Report
The negative information banks typically report includes:
- Involuntary account closures for repeated overdrafts, unpaid fees, or policy violations.
- Unpaid negative balances left over when an account was closed.
- A pattern of bounced checks written without sufficient funds.
- Accounts flagged for fraud or linked to identity theft.
Each entry lists the reporting bank, the date, and any dollar amount owed. Entries stay on your file for five years from the date reported and then drop off automatically, whether or not the underlying debt was paid. ChexSystems also logs every inquiry, so a stack of recent applications can itself look like risk to the next bank that pulls your file.
How a ChexSystems Record Affects a New Account Application
When you apply for a checking or savings account, most banks pull your ChexSystems report and score as part of screening. A low score or a record of closures and unpaid balances often produces an instant denial.
If a bank turns you down based on your ChexSystems file, federal law requires it to send you an adverse action notice. That notice must give you ChexSystems’ name, address, and phone number, tell you that ChexSystems did not make the denial decision, and inform you of your right to a free copy of your report within 60 days and to dispute anything inaccurate.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 US Code 1681m – Requirements on Users of Consumer Reports
Second-Chance Checking
Some banks offer second-chance checking accounts for people rebuilding their banking history. These accounts usually come with reduced features, such as lower transaction limits, no check-writing, or no overdraft protection, and may carry a monthly fee.4Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Is a Second-Chance Bank Account and Who Is It For In exchange, the bank either skips the ChexSystems check or will approve applicants with negative records.
Bank On Certified Accounts
Bank On certified accounts are low-cost accounts offered by participating banks and credit unions that meet national standards: a monthly fee capped at $5 (or $10 if there are two ways to waive it), free electronic statements, and no overdraft penalty fees. The Bank On standards recommend, but do not require, that banks decline customers only when a fraud flag is present, so many of these accounts are open to people with a negative ChexSystems history. Participating institutions are listed on the Bank On website.
How to See What’s on Your File
Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, ChexSystems must give you one free consumer disclosure report every 12 months. You are also entitled to a free report if a bank denied your application within the past 60 days, if you believe your file contains inaccurate information due to fraud, or if you are unemployed and plan to apply for work within 60 days. ChexSystems has 15 days to deliver the report after receiving your request.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681j – Charges for Certain Disclosures
You can request the report three ways:6ChexSystems. Consumer Disclosure
- Online through the ChexSystems Consumer Portal at chexsystems.com.
- By phone at 800-428-9623.
- By mail, using the Consumer Request for Disclosure Form, to Chex Systems, Inc., Attn: Consumer Relations, PO Box 583399, Minneapolis, MN 55458.
You will need your full legal name, Social Security number, date of birth, and current mailing address. Include prior addresses if you have moved recently. Mail requests also require copies of identity documents such as a driver’s license and Social Security card.7ChexSystems. A Summary of Your Rights Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act Make sure you are on the official ChexSystems site; phishing pages that copy its branding do exist. Disputing Errors
If your report contains inaccurate or incomplete information, you have the right to dispute it. You can file the dispute with ChexSystems, which will contact the bank that supplied the data to verify it, or you can dispute directly with the reporting bank.8ChexSystems. Dispute
Send supporting documentation with the dispute. Mark the specific entries you are challenging on a copy of your report and attach evidence: proof of payment for a balance the report still shows as unpaid, or an identity theft affidavit if the account was opened without your permission.
ChexSystems generally has 30 days to complete its investigation. If you submit additional documents while the investigation is already running, that deadline can extend by up to 15 days.8ChexSystems. Dispute The agency must notify you of the results, and if the reporting bank cannot verify the information, ChexSystems must remove it.
If the investigation does not go your way, you can add a personal statement of up to 100 words to your file explaining your side. ChexSystems must include that statement, or a summary of it, in future reports to banks that pull your file.9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 US Code 1681i – Procedure in Case of Disputed Accuracy
Freezing Your File
A security freeze blocks ChexSystems from releasing your report to any third party without your explicit permission. It is most useful if someone has been opening accounts in your name. With a freeze in place, a bank that tries to pull your file gets back a message that the information is blocked.10ChexSystems. Security Freeze Information
Freezes are free. You can place one online through the Consumer Portal, by calling 800-887-7652, or by mailing a written request to Chex Systems, Inc., Attn: Security Freeze Department, PO Box 583399, Minneapolis, MN 55458.11ChexSystems. Place a Security Freeze Mail requests need copies of your driver’s license (front and back), Social Security card, and a recent proof of address such as a utility bill from the last 90 days. ChexSystems will issue you a PIN, which you use to lift the freeze temporarily when you want to apply for an account yourself. Lifting a freeze does not cancel it; access opens for a set period or a specific institution and then closes again.
How Long Entries Last and How to Rebuild
Negative entries stay on your ChexSystems report for five years and then drop off automatically. You do not have to do anything for old entries to disappear once that clock runs out.
Paying off a reported debt will not remove the entry before the five-year mark, but the record will be updated to show the balance as resolved. A paid record looks meaningfully better to a reviewing bank than an open, unpaid one, and some banks will approve applicants whose ChexSystems debts are settled even when the entries are still visible. When you pay, ask the bank for written confirmation and ask that it update the ChexSystems record.
While older entries age off, a second-chance or Bank On certified account lets you build a positive banking history in parallel. Handling one of those accounts without overdrafts or missed fees gives you a track record to point to the next time you apply for a standard account.
