What Does Capital One Travel Insurance Cover: Benefits and Eligible Cards

Capital One travel insurance covers five things when you pay for a trip with an eligible card: trip cancellation and interruption, trip delay, lost or damaged luggage, rental car collision and theft, and accidental injury or death while riding a common carrier. It does not cover emergency medical care or medical evacuation, and the dollar limits and fine print change depending on which Capital One card you hold and whether it runs on the Visa, Mastercard, or Discover network. The figures below use the flagship Venture X as the reference point.

Trip Cancellation and Interruption

If you cancel a flight, train, bus, or ferry trip or cut one short, the Venture X reimburses nonrefundable common carrier tickets up to $2,000 per person for the cardholder, spouse, and dependent children.1NerdWallet. Capital One Venture X Card Travel Insurance

The qualifying reasons are narrow. Coverage applies only when the trip is disrupted by the death, accidental injury, or illness of the cardholder or an immediate family member, or when the carrier itself fails from financial insolvency. Weather fears, work conflicts, or general unease about traveling are not covered reasons. Prepaid hotel stays and tour packages are also excluded.1NerdWallet. Trip Delay

When a common carrier trip is delayed six or more hours or requires an overnight stay, the Venture X pays up to $500 per ticket for reasonable out-of-pocket costs like meals, lodging, and toiletries.2Capital One. Visa Infinite Guide to Card Benefits Covered reasons include weather, airline strikes, aircraft maintenance, and emergencies. The benefit applies to the cardholder, spouse, and dependent children under 22 traveling together, and any single expense above $50 needs an itemized receipt.3Thrifty Traveler. Lost or Damaged Luggage

If a carrier loses or damages your checked or carry-on bags, the Venture X covers up to $3,000 per passenger, paying the difference between what the airline settles and the value of your claim. You have to file with the carrier first before the card benefit kicks in.1NerdWallet. Capital One Venture X Card Travel Insurance

Baggage delay is a separate matter. None of the Visa-network Capital One tiers currently include baggage delay reimbursement, so if your bags show up a day late you’re on your own under a Venture X. Capital One cards on the Mastercard and Discover networks do list baggage delay as a covered benefit.4Forbes. Capital One Travel Insurance

Rental Car Collision Damage

The Venture X provides primary rental car collision and theft coverage, so you can claim without first going through your personal auto policy.5Capital One. Capital One Rental Car Insurance It applies to vehicles with an MSRP up to $75,000, for rental periods up to 15 consecutive days in your country of residence and 31 days abroad. You must charge the whole rental to the card and decline the rental company’s collision damage waiver.2Capital One. Visa Infinite Guide to Card Benefits

Several categories of vehicle and location fall outside the policy: exotic cars, antiques, cargo vans, trucks, motorcycles, mopeds, limousines, and RVs, along with rentals in Israel, Jamaica, the Republic of Ireland, and Northern Ireland.2Capital One. Visa Infinite Guide to Card Benefits The benefit also does not cover liability for injuries to other people or damage to their property. Most other Capital One cards with rental coverage provide it on a secondary basis, meaning your own auto insurance pays first.5Capital One. Capital One Rental Car Insurance

Common Carrier Travel Accident Insurance

The Venture X includes up to $1,000,000 in accident coverage for loss of life, limb, sight, speech, or hearing while riding, boarding, or exiting a plane, train, bus, ferry, or other licensed public conveyance. Coverage extends to taxi or rideshare trips immediately before or after a scheduled carrier departure and to time at the airport or terminal.2Capital One. Visa Infinite Guide to Card Benefits The Capital One Visa Signature guide lists the same benefit at up to $250,000.6Capital One. Visa Signature Guide to Benefits

This is strictly an accident policy. It pays nothing toward medical treatment, hospital stays, or emergency evacuation.

What Capital One Travel Insurance Does Not Cover

The biggest gap is medical. The Venture X provides zero reimbursement for hospital visits, doctor bills, or emergency evacuation while traveling.7Squaremouth. Capital One Venture X Travel Insurance The million-dollar accident benefit only applies to injuries sustained on a common carrier, not to getting sick at a hotel or hurting yourself hiking.

Other limits worth knowing:

  • Trip cancellation applies to only two scenarios (injury, illness, or death in the family, or carrier insolvency) and only to common carrier fares, not prepaid hotels or tours.1NerdWallet. Capital One Venture X Card Travel Insurance
  • There is no Cancel For Any Reason upgrade through the card itself, though Capital One’s travel portal offers complimentary CFAR on certain eligible bookings made through that portal.7Squaremouth. Capital One Venture X Travel Insurance
  • Any pre-existing condition that appeared within 60 days before you bought the ticket is excluded, and the card offers no waiver.2Capital One. Visa Infinite Guide to Card Benefits
  • Cancellations driven by fear of weather or illness, including COVID, are explicitly excluded.8Capital One. Travel Protection Benefits

For international travel, insurance brokers typically recommend buying a standalone medical or comprehensive policy to fill the medical gap. Standalone policies commonly cover emergency medical expenses up to $500,000, include evacuation, and allow a pre-existing condition waiver when purchased within 14 days of the initial trip deposit.7Squaremouth. Which Capital One Cards Qualify

Capital One identifies the Venture X, Venture, VentureOne, Quicksilver, and Savor as cards that carry travel insurance benefits.10Capital One. Credit Cards With Travel Insurance What you actually get varies by both the specific card and the payment network stamped on it, and Capital One cautions that “not all cards are eligible for cardholder benefits.”8Capital One. To confirm what your card covers, look at the logo on the front (Visa, Mastercard, or Discover) and pull the matching benefits guide from Capital One’s cardholder benefits page.11Capital One. How to File a Claim

Capital One does not administer travel insurance claims itself. Third-party administrators handle them, and the right one depends on the benefit and the network.8Capital One. Travel Protection Benefits For Venture X cardholders on the Visa network:

Before you call, pull together your travel itinerary, the credit card statement showing the charge, receipts for anything you want reimbursed, and a written statement from the airline or carrier explaining the delay, cancellation, or loss.
