What Does Allianz Travel Insurance Cover? Benefits, Limits, and Pricing

Allianz travel insurance covers trip cancellation and interruption, emergency medical and dental care abroad, emergency medical transportation, travel delays, lost or delayed baggage, and rental car damage, with specific dollar limits that depend on which of the company’s single-trip or annual plans a U.S. resident buys. The lineup runs from a bare cancellation-only policy up to the OneTrip Premier, which carries up to $200,000 in trip cancellation coverage and up to $1 million in emergency medical transportation.1NerdWallet. Trip Cancellation and Interruption

This is the core benefit. If you have to cancel a trip before leaving, or cut it short after departing, Allianz reimburses the prepaid, nonrefundable costs you lose, up to the plan’s limit. Those limits scale sharply by plan: $5,000 on the budget OneTrip Cancellation Plus, $10,000 on OneTrip Basic, $100,000 on OneTrip Prime, and $200,000 for cancellation and $300,000 for interruption on OneTrip Premier.1NerdWallet. Allianz Travel Insurance: What You Need to Know

The reason you cancel has to appear on the policy’s list. Covered reasons include serious illness or injury to you, a traveling companion, or a family member; a death in the family; job loss or mandatory relocation of at least 100 miles; jury duty; a government-ordered evacuation for a natural disaster; a car accident or breakdown on the way to the airport; stolen travel documents; a visa refusal; legal separation or divorce; and quarantine.2Allianz Travel Insurance. Covered Reasons for Trip Cancellation Explained A NOAA hurricane warning at the destination is a covered reason on the OneTrip Premier plan but not on lower tiers.3Allianz Travel Insurance. OneTrip Premier Plan

A few conditions matter. For an illness-related cancellation, a doctor has to examine you and advise against the trip before you cancel, or within 72 hours after. A family member’s illness must be life-threatening or require hospitalization. Anything that was reasonably foreseeable when you bought the policy, such as a hurricane that had already been named, won’t qualify.4Allianz Travel Insurance. Cancel Anytime Upgrade

Allianz does not sell a true Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) policy.6MarketWatch. Allianz Travel Insurance Review It does offer a Cancel Anytime upgrade on the OneTrip Prime and OneTrip Premier plans, which reimburses 80% of your prepaid, nonrefundable trip costs for almost any unforeseeable reason not already listed, including things like a scheduling conflict or a pet’s illness. The benefit is capped at $16,000.7Allianz Travel Insurance. Cancel Anytime Explained

To qualify, you have to buy the plan within 14 days of your first trip payment, insure the full trip cost, and have a departure date at least 30 days out. It is not sold in every state.8Allianz Travel Insurance. Cancel Anytime Benefit

Emergency Medical and Dental Care

If you get sick or hurt during a trip, Allianz reimburses medical expenses up to the plan limit. OneTrip Basic caps medical at $10,000, OneTrip Prime at $50,000, and OneTrip Premier at up to $75,000. The standalone OneTrip Emergency Medical plan carries a $50,000 limit. Emergency dental is included on plans that offer medical coverage but capped at a $750 sublimit.3Allianz Travel Insurance. A detail worth knowing before you buy: on single-trip plans, Allianz’s medical coverage is primary, so you can file your claim directly without going through your health insurer first.10Allianz Travel Insurance. Primary Insurance Coverage On annual AllTrips plans, medical is secondary, meaning you file with your health insurer first and submit the remainder to Allianz.11Allianz Travel Insurance. Secondary Insurance Coverage Because Medicare and Medicaid generally do not cover care outside the United States, travelers on those programs effectively treat a secondary Allianz plan as primary when going abroad.12Allianz Travel Insurance. Emergency Medical Transportation

This benefit pays to move you to an appropriate medical facility when Allianz’s medical assistance team decides local care isn’t adequate. It also covers commercial transport home after you’ve stabilized, a medical escort such as a nurse on a stretcher flight when needed, and travel for a family member to reach you if you’re hospitalized for more than 48 hours. If your dependent children are left unaccompanied because of the hospitalization, the plan can arrange their return home.13Allianz Travel Insurance. Limits swing widely: up to $50,000 on OneTrip Basic, $250,000 on OneTrip Emergency Medical, $500,000 on OneTrip Prime, and up to $1 million on OneTrip Premier.1NerdWallet. Travel Delays

Travel delay coverage reimburses meals, hotels, and local transportation when a departure is held up for a covered reason. The minimum delay to trigger benefits is generally three consecutive hours on comprehensive plans, though it can run as long as six hours on certain airline-distributed policies.16Allianz Travel Insurance. OneTrip Prime covers up to $800 total at $200 per day; OneTrip Premier covers up to $1,600 total at $200 per day.18Allianz Travel Insurance. OneTrip Prime Plan3Allianz Travel Insurance. Submit your flight details at purchase and Allianz will monitor the flight and send the payment automatically when a covered delay occurs. If your actual expenses run higher than $100 a day, you can still file a separate receipt-based claim for the difference up to the plan’s cap.19Allianz Travel Insurance. Baggage Loss, Damage, and Delay

Allianz reimburses the replacement cost of luggage and personal belongings that are lost, damaged, or stolen while you’re traveling, and covers essential purchases like clothing and toiletries when a bag is delayed. The delay has to be at least 12 hours and caused by a common carrier, hotel, or tour operator.21Allianz Travel Insurance. Baggage Delay Benefit

By plan:

  • OneTrip Basic: up to $500 for loss or damage, $200 for delay.
  • OneTrip Prime: up to $1,000 for loss or damage, $300 for delay.
  • OneTrip Premier: up to $2,000 for loss or damage, $600 for delay.
  • OneTrip Emergency Medical: up to $2,000 for loss or damage, $600 for delay.
  • OneTrip Rental Car Protector: up to $1,000 for loss or damage; delay not covered.
  • OneTrip Cancellation Plus: baggage not covered.1NerdWallet. Allianz Travel Insurance: What You Need to Know

Reimbursement is based on the actual price, actual cash value, repair cost, or replacement cost, whichever is less. Per-item sublimits may apply, and you have to file a report with the appropriate authorities and take reasonable steps to recover the belongings.22Allianz Travel Insurance. Rental Car Protection

The standalone OneTrip Rental Car Protector provides primary coverage for collision, loss, and damage to a rental vehicle up to $75,000, at $13 per calendar day. You can buy it on its own or add it to another OneTrip plan, and because it is primary, you don’t have to involve your personal auto insurance first.23Allianz Travel Insurance. OneTrip Rental Car Protector Annual AllTrips plans include up to $45,000 in rental car damage and theft coverage per trip, but that benefit is not available to residents of Kansas, Texas, or New York.24Allianz Travel Insurance. COVID-19 and Other Epidemic Illness

Most Allianz plans sold on or after March 6, 2021 include an Epidemic Coverage Endorsement that adds epidemic illnesses, including COVID-19, as covered reasons for trip cancellation, interruption, travel delay, emergency medical care, and emergency transportation.25Allianz Travel Insurance. The Epidemic Coverage Endorsement Explained

The endorsement applies when you or a traveling companion is diagnosed with an epidemic disease or tests positive, even without symptoms, or when you are individually ordered to quarantine by name. The quarantine provision is narrow: broad orders like citywide lockdowns or destination entry-requirement quarantines don’t qualify. Fear of illness, government travel advisories, and the cost of mandatory testing or vaccinations are not covered.26Allianz Travel Insurance. COVID-19 FAQ

Pre-Existing Medical Conditions

By default, Allianz excludes losses tied to pre-existing conditions, which it defines as any illness, injury, or medical condition for which you, a family member, or a traveling companion sought treatment, had symptoms, or took prescribed medication in the 120 days before you bought the plan.27Allianz Travel Insurance. Existing Medical Conditions Coverage

Most plans offer a waiver if you meet all of the criteria: buy within 14 days of your first nonrefundable trip payment, insure the full nonrefundable trip cost (and insure any later additions within 14 days of paying them), be a U.S. resident, and be medically able to travel the day you buy. Even with the waiver, sublimits can apply. On OneTrip Prime, the general trip cancellation limit is $100,000, but reimbursement for a loss caused by a pre-existing condition is capped at $50,000.27Allianz Travel Insurance. What Allianz Does Not Cover

Several categories of loss are excluded across all plans:

  • Extreme and high-risk sports, including skydiving, BASE jumping, bungee jumping, hang gliding, caving, free climbing, scuba diving deeper than 60 feet or without a dive master, skiing or snowboarding outside marked trails, racing motorized vehicles, and personal combat sports. Allianz can exclude an activity even if it isn’t specifically named, and U.S. plans do not sell an add-on for excluded sports.29Allianz Travel Insurance. Adventure Vacation Travel Insurance
  • Foreseeable events known or reasonably predictable when you bought the policy.
  • Normal pregnancy and childbirth.
  • Alcohol or drug use and any resulting symptoms.
  • Acts of war, military duty, or civil unrest.

  • Gross negligence.
  • Professional or amateur sporting competitions, though informal recreational games aren’t excluded.1NerdWallet. Allianz Travel Insurance: What You Need to Know29Allianz Travel Insurance. Adventure Vacation Travel Insurance

Annual Plans for Frequent Travelers

If you take several trips a year, an annual AllTrips policy may cost less than insuring each trip separately. There are four tiers:

  • AllTrips Basic covers emergency medical up to $20,000, medical transportation up to $100,000, travel delays, and baggage, but not trip cancellation or interruption.
  • AllTrips Prime adds trip cancellation and interruption up to $3,000.
  • AllTrips Executive raises cancellation and interruption to $5,000–$10,000, emergency medical to $50,000, and medical transportation to $250,000, and adds business equipment protection.
  • AllTrips Premier offers selectable cancellation and interruption limits of $2,000 to $15,000, emergency medical up to $50,000, medical transportation up to $500,000, and household-wide coverage for people living together whether they travel together or separately.24Allianz Travel Insurance. Annual Travel Insurance Plans

All annual plans carry the $45,000 rental car benefit (except in Kansas, Texas, and New York) and a travel accident benefit. Remember that emergency medical coverage on annual plans is secondary.11Allianz Travel Insurance. Secondary Insurance Coverage

What Drives the Price

Allianz prices premiums on two things: the total prepaid trip cost and the traveler’s age. Medical history, destination, and claims history don’t affect the price.31Allianz Travel Insurance. Complete Travel Insurance Guide As a benchmark, a 25-year-old solo traveler on a one-week $3,500 trip would pay roughly $119 for OneTrip Basic, $171 for Prime, and $209 for Premier. A 40-year-old couple on a one-week $5,000 trip would run approximately $214 to $398 depending on the tier.32U.S. News. Allianz Travel Insurance

Families can save: children 17 and under are covered free when added to a qualifying OneTrip Prime or Premier policy bought by a parent or grandparent, except in Pennsylvania.33Allianz Travel Insurance. Find a Plan
