AAA Classic membership covers you — the person, not a specific car — for four roadside assistance calls per year, plus access to AAA’s travel booking services, a nationwide member-discount network, insurance rate reductions, and a basic Experian identity-monitoring plan. It’s the entry-level tier, priced around $65 a year depending on your regional club.
The Four Roadside Calls You Get Each Year
Classic gives you four service calls per membership year, available 24/7. Unused calls don’t carry over. Each call can be used for any one of the following:
- Towing up to five miles from the breakdown (some clubs list seven), or any distance if you’re going to the nearest AAA Approved Auto Repair facility. Longer tows are billed at a discounted per-mile rate.
- Flat tire change using your inflatable spare. AAA won’t supply a spare; if you don’t have a usable one, the vehicle gets towed under the towing benefit instead.
- Battery jump-start, with the option to buy and have a replacement battery installed on the spot. AAA batteries carry a three-year free-replacement warranty across the U.S. and Canada.
- Emergency fuel delivery — enough to reach the nearest gas station. Classic members pay for the fuel; delivery itself is free.
- Lockout service. A technician will try to unlock the passenger area at no charge. If entry fails or your keys are lost or broken, Classic covers up to $50 toward a locksmith. You can hire your own and submit for reimbursement online.
- Winching and extrication if your vehicle is stuck within about 25 feet of a paved road. AAA sends one truck and one driver; any additional equipment or personnel are on you.
- Bicycle transportation in many regions — AAA will pick up a disabled non-motorized bike and take you and the bike to a destination within your towing allowance. It uses one of your four calls.
Coverage Follows You, Not Your Car
Your Classic membership attaches to you, so the benefits apply whether you’re driving your own car, a friend’s car, or a rental. The catch: you have to be at the scene when service is requested. If you want someone else in your household to call AAA on their own, add them as an associate member.
You can add up to five people from your household — spouse, domestic partner, parent, or dependent children including college students away at school. Associates get their own cards and the same benefits, usually for about $45 a year each, though promotional first-year rates as low as $20 come around. Some regional clubs cap associate members at two service calls a year rather than four.
What Classic Doesn’t Cover
The gaps matter as much as the benefits, because this is where people get surprised with a bill or a denial.
Tier limits — things Plus or Premier handle but Classic doesn’t:
- Long tows. Classic caps at roughly five to seven miles per call. Plus extends to 100 miles. Premier adds one 200-mile tow per household per year on top of that.
- Free fuel. Classic delivers it; Plus and Premier also pay for it.
- Trip interruption and lost baggage coverage. Classic has none. Plus pays up to $750 and $250. Premier pays up to $1,500 and $500.
- Home lockout locksmith reimbursement (up to $100). Premier only.
- RV and motorcycle towing, extrication, and tire service. Not included in standard Classic. Motorcycles get only fuel delivery and locksmith service unless you buy the RV/Motorcycle add-on.
- A free one-day rental car when your vehicle is towed. Premier only.
Blanket exclusions that apply no matter the tier:
- Commercial vehicles — taxis, limousines, shuttle buses, anything used commercially.
- Pre-existing breakdowns from before you joined. These don’t count against your four calls, but you pay a non-refundable fee.
- Same-day sign-up calls, which trigger an extra service fee. Full roadside coverage typically kicks in 48 hours after you join.
- Vehicles stuck in inaccessible spots — beaches, open fields, creek beds, logging roads, snowbound driveways.
- Convenience tows for sales, auctions, car shows, donations, relocations, or to and from a salvage yard.
- Towing a vehicle you bought already inoperable back to your home.
- Repeated calls on the same neglected vehicle; AAA can refuse service when roadside help is standing in for maintenance.
- Snow tire or chain installation, snow shoveling around a vehicle, driveway clearing.
- Impound fees, police-ordered tows, and stolen-vehicle recovery charges.
Travel Perks and Member Discounts
Beyond roadside help, Classic opens access to AAA’s travel desk and discount network. In-branch travel advisors will plan vacations at no charge, and members get rates on hotels, cruises, rental cars, and packages booked through AAA.
Specific travel benefits include 10 percent or more off select hotel rates, often with free cancellation; Hertz discounts up to 20 percent off base rates plus a free additional driver, free child safety seat, waived young-renter fees for ages 20 to 24, and complimentary Hertz Gold Plus Rewards; onboard, dining, and excursion credits on select AAA cruise bookings; free U.S. and state maps and online TripTik routing; and free passport photos at participating branches, with 10 percent off expedited passport and visa processing through RushMyPassport. Select international maps carry a small fee at the Classic level that’s waived at Plus and above. Paper TourBooks were discontinued at the end of 2021.
AAA says members who actively use the discount program save an average of $220 a year. Classic gets the full network. A sampling of what’s in it:
- Fuel: 30 cents per gallon off a first fill-up through Shell’s Fuel Rewards program, 13 cents off at Love’s Travel Stops.
- Auto parts and repair: 10 percent off at NAPA, and 10 percent off labor (up to $75) at more than 7,000 AAA Approved Auto Repair shops, with a 24-month/24,000-mile parts and labor warranty.
- Dining and entertainment: up to 40 percent off digital gift cards, 10 percent off at Hard Rock Cafe and Landry’s, and discounted tickets to theme parks, movies, concerts, sporting events, zoos, and aquariums.
- Shipping and moving: 15 percent off at The UPS Store, 12 percent off Penske truck rentals, average savings of $840 on interstate moves with Atlas Van Lines.
- Electronics: up to 35 percent off select HP products, up to 30 percent off at Samsung, plus Dell discounts.
- Eye care: 20 percent off frames and 50 percent off lenses at LensCrafters.
- Prescriptions: through a GoodRx partnership, up to 85 percent off medications at more than 70,000 pharmacies, with an additional 5 to 10 percent beyond the standard GoodRx discount.
- Fitness: Active&Fit Direct gym access starting at $28 a month, covering more than 12,800 fitness centers and studios, with 10 percent of fees back after 12 months.
Insurance, Identity, and Branch Services
AAA’s auto, home, and life insurance are sold as separate products, but membership unlocks a 5 percent discount on AAA auto policies and 10 percent off term and select whole-life policies. Bundling auto and home adds another 5 percent. Using AAA roadside instead of a roadside claim through your auto insurer can also help keep your premiums from rising.
Every Classic membership includes Experian’s ProtectMyID Essential plan at no extra cost. It covers Experian credit monitoring, a credit report at enrollment, dark-web surveillance for your Social Security number and email, an online exposure scan, lost-wallet protection, fraud-resolution help, and text alerts. It does not include the $10,000 or $1 million identity-theft insurance that comes with Premier or paid upgrade plans.
At the branch, Classic members can handle select DMV or MVD transactions like vehicle registration in most locations, and get notary service, typically for $10 per signature (discounted or free at higher tiers).
Price and Regional Differences
AAA is a federation of regional clubs, so what you pay and what you get vary by where you live. The Classic annual fee is $64.99 through the AAA Mountain West Group (Northern California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Wyoming, Montana, and Alaska) and $79 through the AAA Auto Club Group (Florida, Michigan, the Carolinas, and others). Towing distances, the locksmith cap, associate-member call limits, bicycle transport availability, in-branch DMV services, passport photos, and first-year promotions all shift by club. For the definitive list of what applies to your account, check your local club’s member handbook.
