For a US visa biometrics appointment at a Visa Application Center in India, every adult applicant needs four documents: a valid passport, the printed VAC appointment confirmation letter, the DS-160 confirmation page with its barcode, and any older passports that contain prior US visas or entry stamps. Bring originals. Photocopies and phone screenshots are not accepted, and most VAC locations in India do not let you carry a phone inside anyway.1U.S. Embassy & Consulates in India. Entry Guidelines
Below is what each document has to look like, plus the extras that apply if you are a minor, applying in a specific visa category, or attending with a companion.
The Four Core Documents
Your current passport. It must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended period of stay in the United States. India is not on the list of countries exempted from that rule.2U.S. Department of State. Visitor Visa – Section: Gather Required Documentation3CBP.gov. Six-Month Passport Validity Update
The VAC appointment confirmation letter. This is the printed confirmation generated after you schedule and pay for the appointment online. Without it, you will not get past security at the entrance.
The DS-160 confirmation page. Only the single page with the barcode needs to be printed, not the entire application.4U.S. Department of State. DS-160 Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application The barcode begins with “AA” and is what staff scan to pull up your electronic file.5Department of State. DS-160 Frequently Asked Questions
Previous passports. Any old passports that hold valid or expired US visas, or US entry stamps. These give the system your prior travel history to reference. If your current US visa sits in an older passport and you now travel on a newer one, bring both. Never try to peel a visa sticker out of an old passport and move it: that permanently invalidates the visa.6Travel.State.Gov. Frequently Asked Questions
Passport Condition Matters As Much As Validity
A passport with peeling laminate, water damage, torn pages, or a missing cover can be refused at the VAC, and a visa placed into a damaged passport may also be treated as invalid.6Travel.State.Gov. Frequently Asked Questions If yours shows visible wear, replace it before the appointment rather than risk a wasted trip.
Check the DS-160 Barcode Against Your Appointment
The DS-160 barcode number on the confirmation page you carry must exactly match the one linked to your appointment on ustraveldocs.com. Applicants who fill out more than one DS-160 (common when correcting errors) sometimes end up scheduling under one barcode and printing another. If the numbers do not match, you will not be allowed to proceed. Fixing it means canceling, updating your profile with the correct barcode, and booking a new date.7U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Türkiye. Important Update DS-160 Barcode Number Must Match Appointment Information Confirm the match before you leave home.
When You Need a Printed Photo
The VAC captures your photo digitally, so a printed photograph is usually not required. If your DS-160 confirmation page shows a thumbnail of your face, the digital upload worked and you do not need to bring one.8U.S. Department of State. Photo Frequently Asked Questions
If no thumbnail appears, bring one printed photograph that meets the US visa photo specifications:
- 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm), printed on photo-quality paper
- Plain white or off-white background
- Full-face view, neutral expression, both eyes open
- Taken within the last six months and showing your current appearance9U.S. Department of State. Photo Requirements
Even a photo less than six months old can be rejected if your appearance has changed significantly through hairstyle, weight, or facial hair.9U.S. Department of State. Photo Requirements
Extra Documents for Minor Applicants
Since October 1, 2025, the blanket exemption that let children under 14 and adults over 79 skip the in-person interview has been eliminated. All nonimmigrant visa applicants, regardless of age, now generally require an in-person interview with a consular officer, which means children are likely to need biometrics at the VAC too.10U.S. Department of State. Interview Waiver Update September 18, 2025 Check the US Embassy New Delhi website for current instructions on children before you go.
For a child, a parent or guardian should carry the child’s core documents (passport, DS-160 confirmation, appointment letter) plus:
- The child’s original birth certificate
- A printed photograph of the child meeting US visa photo specifications
- Copies of both parents’ passports
- Copies of the parents’ current US visa status documents, where applicable
Keep everything organized in a clear plastic folder. Bags and binders are restricted at most VAC locations.
Extra Documents by Visa Category
The VAC visit is about identity verification and biometric capture, not about evaluating your visa case. The heavy supporting paperwork (financial statements, employment letters, transcripts) belongs at the consular interview. A few categories, though, benefit from carrying their sponsoring form to the VAC in case the system flags the case for additional verification:
- F-1 student applicants: signed Form I-20 and the university admission letter
- J-1 exchange visitor applicants: Form DS-2019 from the sponsoring organization
- H, L, and other petition-based applicants: the petition approval notice (Form I-797)
Bringing a Companion
Applicants who are elderly or have a physical disability may bring one companion to assist them at the VAC or embassy. Only one person is permitted, and the companion is there strictly to help with mobility or communication.11U.S. Department of State. U.S. Embassy New Delhi, India – NWD Attorneys are not permitted to accompany clients into the waiting area or to the interview window.
If a medical condition affects your fingerprints (bandaged fingers, a severe skin condition, missing digits), staff will capture whatever prints they can and note the exception. A medical certificate is not required, but bringing documentation from your doctor can help explain the situation quickly.
What You Cannot Carry In
Because storage is limited, what you carry in matters as much as what you leave behind. Rules on electronics vary by city. Mobile phones are not allowed inside the VACs in Chennai, Kolkata, or Mumbai. In New Delhi, phones are permitted but photography is prohibited. Laptops are banned in Chennai and Kolkata. All locations prohibit bags, suitcases, backpacks, and battery-operated devices such as cameras and power banks.1U.S. Embassy & Consulates in India. Entry Guidelines
Storage options are thin. Mumbai offers storage for electronics and phones. Chennai has storage for phones only. New Delhi has no storage facility at all.1U.S. Embassy & Consulates in India. If You Qualify for an Interview Waiver, You May Skip the VAC
The interview waiver program (sometimes called “dropbox”) lets certain applicants submit documents directly instead of appearing for an interview, and because their fingerprints are already on file from a prior visa, a separate biometrics appointment is often unnecessary.
As of October 1, 2025, the eligible categories were narrowed. You may still qualify if you fall into one of these groups:10U.S. Department of State. Interview Waiver Update September 18, 2025
- B-1/B-2 renewal applicants whose prior visa expired within the last 12 months, was issued for full validity, and who were at least 18 when it was issued
- H-2A renewal applicants meeting the same 12-month and full-validity criteria
- Diplomatic and official visa applicants in certain classification categories
You must also be applying from your country of nationality or usual residence, have no prior visa refusals, and have no apparent ineligibility.10U.S. Department of State. Interview Waiver Update September 18, 2025 Consular officers can still require an in-person interview case by case. If your waiver is approved, you will receive an Interview Waiver Confirmation Letter and submit your passport and previous visa through a drop-off process rather than attending the VAC.
