What Day Will My SSDI Check Be Deposited? Birth Date Rules

Your SSDI check is deposited on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of each month, and which Wednesday you get depends on the day of the month you were born. Two groups follow a different rule: people who started collecting Social Security before May 1997, and people who receive both SSDI and SSI. Both of those groups are paid on the 3rd of the month instead.

Your Wednesday Depends on Your Birth Date

If you began receiving Social Security disability benefits after May 1997, the schedule is simple and repeats every month:1Social Security Administration. Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments 2026

  • Born on the 1st through the 10th: second Wednesday.
  • Born on the 11th through the 20th: third Wednesday.
  • Born on the 21st through the 31st: fourth Wednesday.

The year you were born doesn’t matter. Your state doesn’t matter. Only the day of the month you were born.

Two Exceptions That Pay on the 3rd

If you started collecting Social Security benefits before May 1997, your payment arrives on the 3rd of every month, not on a Wednesday.2Social Security Administration. Paying Monthly Benefits This was the standard schedule before the SSA moved to staggered Wednesdays.

If you receive both SSDI and Supplemental Security Income, the birth-date rule also doesn’t apply to you. Your SSDI is paid on the 3rd, and your SSI is paid on the 1st.1Social Security Administration. Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments 2026

When the Date Falls on a Weekend or Holiday

If your scheduled payment date lands on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday, the SSA deposits your payment on the business day immediately before.3Social Security Administration. When Will I Get My Benefits if the Payment Date Falls on a Weekend or Holiday? This rule applies to both the Wednesday schedule and the 3rd-of-the-month schedule.

The rule matters most for people paid on the 3rd, because a fixed calendar date lands on a weekend several times a year. If January 3rd falls on a Saturday, for example, your payment posts on Friday, January 2nd. For the Wednesday groups, 2026 is fairly clean; Veterans Day is the main shift.

How Your Deposit Method Affects Timing

All Social Security payments are made electronically. Your two options are direct deposit into a bank account or a Direct Express debit card.4Social Security Administration. Direct Deposit

With direct deposit, funds are generally available in your account on the scheduled payment date. Most banks post federal deposits early in the morning, but the exact hour varies by institution. With Direct Express, benefits are loaded onto the card on the same payment date. Paper checks are essentially phased out; if you’re still receiving one, the SSA requires you to switch.

If you change banks, update your information through your my Social Security account at ssa.gov, which the SSA says is the fastest way to make the change.5Social Security Administration. Update Direct Deposit Don’t close the old account until you’ve confirmed at least one payment has posted to the new one. Bank information changes can take a full payment cycle to process, and a deposit sent to a closed account creates a longer delay than keeping both accounts open for a month.

If Your Payment Doesn’t Arrive

Check your bank account or Direct Express balance first. Deposits sometimes appear later in the day than you expect, and bank posting times vary.

If nothing has shown up, wait at least three business days from your scheduled date before contacting the SSA. Minor processing delays are common, and calling earlier will get you the same advice to wait. After three business days, call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY: 1-800-325-0778) with your Social Security number and details about the expected payment.6Social Security Administration. What Should I Do if I Don’t Receive My Social Security Payment?

If the delay traces back to a bank account change that didn’t process in time, the SSA can reissue the payment, though that may take an additional cycle. For Direct Express card deposits, the card’s customer service line at 1-888-741-1115 can confirm whether the payment was received on their end.

If You Were Just Approved, Your First Deposit Comes Later

A first SSDI payment doesn’t follow the Wednesday schedule immediately after approval. Federal law imposes a five-month waiting period that runs from the date the SSA determines your disability began, and your entitlement starts in the sixth full month after that onset date.7Social Security Administration. Approval Process – Disability Benefits Benefits are also paid in the month after they’re due, so a September entitlement is deposited in October on the Wednesday that matches your birth date. People diagnosed with ALS are exempt from the five-month waiting period.

Because approval itself often takes months, many new recipients are also owed back pay covering the gap between their entitlement date and their approval date. The SSA typically issues that back pay as a lump sum, separate from your regular monthly deposit.

The 2026 Cost-of-Living Adjustment

SSDI benefits received a 2.8 percent cost-of-living adjustment starting in January 2026.8Social Security Administration. Social Security Announces 2.8 Percent Benefit Increase for 2026 The higher amount shows up automatically in your January payment; no action is required. If you also receive SSI, that increase took effect slightly earlier, in payments deposited on December 31, 2025.
