What Benefits Do I Get With 80% VA Disability?

An 80% VA disability rating gets you $2,102.15 per month in tax-free compensation in 2026, top-priority VA healthcare with no copays, a waived VA home loan funding fee, and — if your service-connected conditions keep you from working — a path to the 100% pay rate through Individual Unemployability. The full package of 80% VA disability benefits also includes vocational rehabilitation, federal hiring preference, concurrent receipt for military retirees, and a growing set of rating protections the longer you hold the rating.

Your Monthly Payment

A veteran rated at 80% with no dependents receives $2,102.15 per month in 2026. That amount rises with qualifying dependents: a spouse, children under 18 (or up to 23 if enrolled full-time in school), or dependent parents. An 80% veteran with a spouse and one child receives $2,406.15 per month, and there’s an added increase if your spouse qualifies for Aid and Attendance based on their own care needs.1Veterans Affairs. Current Veterans Disability Compensation Rates

VA disability compensation is excluded from gross income, so you won’t owe federal tax on it.2Internal Revenue Service. Veterans Tax Information and Services The rate is adjusted each December through the annual cost-of-living adjustment.

The 100% Pay Rate Through Individual Unemployability

This is the benefit most 80% veterans should look at first. Total Disability Based on Individual Unemployability (TDIU) pays at the 100% compensation rate — $3,938.57 per month in 2026 for a veteran with no dependents — while your combined rating stays at 80%.3Veterans Affairs. Individual Unemployability if You Can’t Work That’s roughly $1,836 more per month than the standard 80% rate.

To qualify, you need either one service-connected disability rated at 60% or more, or two or more service-connected disabilities with at least one rated at 40% or higher and a combined rating of 70% or more. An 80% combined rating meets one of those two paths depending on how your individual conditions are rated. You also have to show that your service-connected conditions actually prevent substantially gainful employment; odd jobs and marginal work don’t count against you.3Veterans Affairs. Individual Unemployability if You Can’t Work

You apply using VA Form 21-8940 (application for increased compensation based on unemployability) and VA Form 21-4192 (request for employment information), backed by medical evidence tying your work limitations to your service-connected conditions.

Healthcare With No Copays

An 80% rating puts you in Priority Group 1, the highest tier in VA healthcare.4Veterans Affairs. VA Priority Groups You pay zero copays for inpatient care, outpatient visits, and prescriptions, including for conditions unrelated to your military service.5Veterans Affairs. Current VA Health Care Copay Rates The VA also reimburses travel to approved appointments at 41.5 cents per mile, subject to a $3 deductible each way capped at $18 per month.6Veterans Affairs. If you get emergency care at a civilian facility, notify the nearest VA within 72 hours. Miss that window and you may be stuck with the bill.7eCFR. 38 CFR Part 17 – Veterans Community Care Program

Where 80% Isn’t Enough

Two healthcare-related benefits sit behind a higher bar. Comprehensive VA dental care requires a 100% rating or TDIU paid at the 100% rate; at 80%, you qualify only if you have a service-connected dental condition for which you receive compensation.8Veterans Affairs. VA Dental Care CHAMPVA, which covers medical services for your spouse and children, requires you to be rated permanently and totally disabled.9Veterans Affairs. CHAMPVA Benefits An 80% rating alone doesn’t open either door, but TDIU or a later increase can.

The Home Loan Funding Fee Exemption

Any veteran receiving VA compensation for a service-connected disability is exempt from the VA home loan funding fee.10Veterans Affairs. VA Funding Fee and Loan Closing Costs The fee is a one-time charge that can run into the thousands depending on your down payment and whether it’s your first VA loan; on a $300,000 home with no down payment, a first-use borrower would otherwise pay roughly $6,900. The exemption applies to both purchase loans and refinances.

Separate adapted housing grants exist for veterans whose service-connected conditions create specific physical barriers at home, but eligibility is tied to the nature of your disability rather than the percentage rating.11Veterans Affairs. Disability Housing Grants for Veterans The same is true of the up to $27,074.99 automobile allowance for veterans with qualifying mobility-related conditions.12Veterans Affairs. Current Special Benefit Allowance Rates An 80% rating doesn’t automatically qualify you for either, but if your rated conditions match the criteria, apply.

Education, Training, and Job Placement

The Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) pays public in-state tuition, a housing allowance tied to your school’s location, and a stipend for books. Eligibility depends on your post-September 10, 2001 active-duty service history rather than your rating.13Veterans Affairs. Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33)

Where 80% helps directly is Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E, Chapter 31), the VA’s program for veterans whose service-connected disabilities create barriers to work. It covers vocational counseling, training, resume support, and job placement, and for veterans with a serious employment handicap, it can pay for education beyond what the GI Bill offers.14Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 38 USC Chapter 31 – Training and Rehabilitation for Veterans With Service-Connected Disabilities At 80%, you comfortably clear the rating threshold.

Dependents’ Educational Assistance (Chapter 35) is a separate program for spouses and children, but it requires a permanent and total rating, so 80% alone doesn’t trigger it.15Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 38 USC Chapter 35 – Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance

Federal Hiring Preference

A disability rating of 30% or more qualifies you for non-competitive appointment to federal positions, meaning agencies can hire you without running you through the standard competitive process.16U.S. Office of Personnel Management. Veterans and Transitioning Service Members The appointment can start temporary or term with no grade-level restriction, and the agency has discretion to convert it to permanent.17Bureau of the Fiscal Service. 30% Disabled Vet Appointing Authority You also get a 10-point preference on competitive examination scores.

Special Allowances and Life Insurance

If a prosthetic, brace, wheelchair, or topical medication for a service-connected skin condition damages your clothes, the VA pays an annual clothing allowance of $1,053.19 in 2026, and you can receive more than one allowance if multiple items each cause separate damage.18Veterans Affairs. VA Clothing Allowance

Veterans Affairs Life Insurance (VALife) is available to any veteran with a service-connected disability. It offers up to $40,000 in whole life coverage with no medical underwriting; your service-connected status is the only qualification.19Veterans Affairs. Veterans Affairs Life Insurance (VALife) VALife replaced the older S-DVI program, which closed to new applicants after December 31, 2022.20Veterans Affairs. Concurrent Receipt for Military Retirees

If you’re a military retiree, VA disability compensation historically came out of your retired pay dollar for dollar. Two programs restore that offset, and at 80% you’re eligible for both consideration paths.

Concurrent Retirement and Disability Pay (CRDP) lets you collect full military retired pay and full VA disability compensation without offset. You qualify with at least 20 years of creditable service and a VA rating of 50% or more, so an 80% rating meets the rating bar. Enrollment is automatic.21Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 10 USC 1414 – Members Eligible for Retired Pay Who Are Also Eligible for Veterans’ Disability Compensation If you retired under Chapter 61 with fewer than 20 years, CRDP doesn’t apply, though a partial restoration may.

Combat-Related Special Compensation (CRSC) is the alternative for retirees whose disabilities are tied to combat, hazardous duty, an instrumentality of war, or conditions simulating war. CRSC requires a VA rating of at least 10% and active retirement status, and you have to apply through your branch of service.22U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Combat-Related Special Compensation (CRSC) You can receive CRDP or CRSC in a given month, not both, and DFAS generally pays whichever is higher.

Rating Protections That Grow Over Time

The longer your 80% rating stays in place, the harder it becomes for the VA to reduce it. Three time-based protections stack:

  • Five-year rule. After five years, a rating is considered stabilized. The VA can only reduce it if medical evidence shows sustained improvement, not just one good exam.
  • Ten-year rule. After ten years of continuous service connection for a disability, the VA cannot sever the service connection. The rating for that condition could still be reduced, but the link to your service is locked in.
  • Twenty-year rule. After twenty years continuously rated at or above a given level, the VA cannot reduce below that level unless the original rating was based on fraud.

At five years the evidentiary burden on the VA is already substantial. At twenty, the protection is near-absolute.

State and Recreation Benefits

Every state offers some form of property tax relief for disabled veterans, but the thresholds and amounts vary widely. Some states extend partial exemptions to veterans at 80%; others reserve their largest exemptions for 100%. The difference can range from a few thousand dollars off your assessed value to a full waiver. Your county assessor’s office or state department of veterans affairs will have the specifics for where you live.

You also qualify for the America the Beautiful Lifetime Access Pass, which gives you and any passengers in your vehicle free entry to national parks and federal recreation areas, plus discounts on things like camping. You can pick one up free at a participating federal recreation site with a photo ID and disability documentation, or order it online or by mail for a $10 processing fee.23VA News.
