A 50% VA disability rating gets you $1,132.90 per month tax-free in 2026, top-tier VA healthcare with no copays, a full waiver of the VA home loan funding fee, mileage reimbursement for medical travel, and — for military retirees with 20+ years of service — the ability to collect full retirement pay alongside disability compensation. The 50% VA disability benefits package also includes hiring preference for federal jobs, access to Veteran Readiness and Employment services, and guaranteed-issue life insurance. A few benefits people commonly assume come with any disability rating, like comprehensive dental care and CHAMPVA for family members, do not.
Monthly Compensation
A veteran rated at 50% with no dependents receives $1,132.90 per month in 2026. The payment is tax-free and increases when you have eligible dependents. With a spouse, the monthly rate is $1,241.87. Adding one child brings it to $1,322.56.1U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Current Veterans Disability Compensation Rates Eligible dependents include a spouse, children under 18, children aged 18 to 23 who attend school full-time, and dependent parents.
Because the compensation isn’t taxable, its effective value is higher than an equivalent gross paycheck. Rates rise each year with the Social Security cost-of-living adjustment.
Healthcare
A 50% rating puts you in Priority Group 1 for VA healthcare, the highest tier.2U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. VA Priority Groups That means no copays for inpatient or outpatient care, including care for conditions that aren’t service-connected, and no copays for prescriptions tied to service-connected conditions. Over a year of appointments and refills, the difference from a lower priority group is substantial.
Travel Reimbursement
At 30% or higher, you qualify for reimbursement when you travel to VA healthcare appointments.3U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. File and Manage Travel Reimbursement Claims The rate is 41.5 cents per mile, with a $3 deductible each way (or $6 round-trip) per appointment. The deductible caps at $18 per month, and after that the VA pays full mileage for the rest of the month.4U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Reimbursed VA Travel Expenses and Mileage Rate If you live far from a VA facility, this adds up quickly.
Dental Care Is Limited
A 50% rating does not include routine dental care. Full VA dental benefits are reserved for veterans rated 100% disabled.5U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. VA Dental Care At 50%, you can get VA dental care only if you have a dental condition that is itself service-connected and compensable, if your dental issues resulted from combat wounds or service trauma, or if dental treatment is medically necessary to prepare for other VA hospital care.6U.S. Government Publishing Office. 38 USC 1712 – Dental Care and Outpatient Dental Treatment Otherwise, plan on private insurance or out-of-pocket.
Home Loan Funding Fee Waiver
Any veteran receiving VA disability compensation is exempt from the VA home loan funding fee, at any rating percentage.7U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. VA Funding Fee and Loan Closing Costs The fee typically runs from about 1.25% to 3.3% of the loan amount depending on the loan type, down payment, and whether it’s a first or subsequent use.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 38 USC 3729 – Loan Guarantee Fee
On a $300,000 no-down-payment purchase, skipping a 2.15% funding fee keeps roughly $6,450 out of the loan. The exemption applies to purchase, construction, and VA refinance loans. Surviving spouses receiving Dependency and Indemnity Compensation also qualify.7U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. VA Funding Fee and Loan Closing Costs
Concurrent Retirement and Disability Pay
If you’re a military retiree with 20 or more years of service, 50% is the exact threshold that turns on Concurrent Retirement and Disability Pay. CRDP lets you collect full military retirement pay and full VA disability compensation without the dollar-for-dollar offset that otherwise reduces retirement checks.9Congressional Research Service. Defense Primer: Concurrent Receipt of Military Retirement and VA Disability Compensation Below 50%, the offset still applies.
Enrollment is automatic. Your CRDP amount cannot exceed your gross retirement pay based on years of service. The VA disability portion stays tax-free; the restored retirement portion remains taxable and is subject to division in former-spouse court orders.
Employment and Education Support
Veteran Readiness and Employment
The Veteran Readiness and Employment program (formerly Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment, or VR&E) helps disabled veterans prepare for, find, and keep suitable work. At 20% or higher, you’re entitled to services if a VA counselor determines your disability creates a barrier to employment, so at 50% you clear the threshold comfortably.10U.S. Army. Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E) Depending on the counselor’s assessment, the program can cover tuition, books, and fees for a degree or certification, job training, resume development, workplace accommodations, or direct job placement. Veterans whose disabilities prevent them from working can receive independent living services.
Federal Hiring Preference
A compensable service-connected disability qualifies you for 10-point preference on federal job applications, above the 5-point preference available to veterans without a service-connected disability rating.11U.S. Office of Personnel Management. What Is 10-Point Preference and Who Is Eligible Certain spouses and surviving family members of disabled veterans may also qualify for derivative preference.
Life Insurance
Any service-connected disability rating, including 50%, makes you eligible to apply for Veterans Affairs Life Insurance (VALife), which offers up to $40,000 of whole life coverage in $10,000 increments. There’s no time limit to apply after receiving a rating, as long as you’re 80 or younger.12U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Veterans Affairs Life Insurance (VALife)
The policy has a two-year waiting period. If you die during that window, beneficiaries receive the premiums paid plus interest (4.23% for deaths in 2026) rather than the full face value. After two years, full coverage applies. The value is guaranteed acceptance, which is often the sticking point for veterans with significant conditions in the private market.
Other Benefits
Clothing Allowance
If a prosthetic device, orthopedic brace, or prescribed skin medication tied to your service-connected condition damages your clothing, you can apply for an annual clothing allowance.13U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. VA Clothing Allowance Eligibility is based on the equipment or medicine, not the rating percentage. The deadline is August 1, and payments typically go out between September and October.
National Parks Access Pass
Veterans with a permanent disability can obtain the America the Beautiful Access Pass for free lifetime entry to over 2,000 federal recreation sites, including national parks, forests, and wildlife refuges. Your VA disability rating letter is the qualifying documentation. The pass also covers standard amenity fees and gives discounts on expanded amenity fees like camping.14U.S. National Park Service. America the Beautiful – The National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Access Pass
State Benefits
Many states add their own benefits: property tax exemptions, reduced vehicle registration fees, hunting or fishing license waivers, and sometimes waived professional licensing fees. What you get at 50% varies widely. Some states offer partial property tax exemptions at this level; others reserve any meaningful reduction for 100% ratings. Check with your state’s Department of Veterans Affairs for specifics.
What 50% Does Not Get You
A 50% rating does not qualify your dependents for CHAMPVA, the VA’s health coverage program for family members. CHAMPVA requires the veteran to be rated permanently and totally disabled from a service-connected condition.15U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. About CHAMPVA Benefits It also doesn’t include comprehensive dental (covered above).
If your conditions worsen, higher ratings unlock more. At 100%, full dental and CHAMPVA come into play. And if your service-connected conditions prevent substantially gainful employment, Total Disability based on Individual Unemployability pays at the 100% rate even with a lower combined rating. Standard TDIU eligibility requires either a single disability rated at 60% or higher, or a combined rating of 70% with at least one condition at 40%.16U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Individual Unemployability If You Can’t Work
Protecting Your Rating
The VA can’t drop your 50% rating on the basis of a single follow-up exam. Federal regulation builds in escalating protections the longer a rating has been in place, which matters because a reduction below 50% would cost you the funding fee exemption, travel pay, and (for retirees) concurrent receipt.
- After five years, the rating is considered stabilized. The VA can only reduce it if the entire medical record shows sustained improvement, not a single good day on an exam.17eCFR. 38 CFR 3.344 – Stabilization of Disability Evaluations
- After ten years, the VA can no longer sever service connection for the disability (absent fraud), though it can still adjust the percentage if improvement is shown.
- After twenty continuous years, the rating cannot be reduced below the lowest level it held during that period.
Conditions the VA treats as permanent, like an amputation, generally don’t trigger re-exam requests. Ratings for conditions that naturally fluctuate, such as certain mental health or respiratory conditions, are the most likely to draw a follow-up.17eCFR. 38 CFR 3.344 – Stabilization of Disability Evaluations
