A 100% Permanent and Total VA disability rating pays $3,938.58 per month tax-free in 2026 and unlocks a set of benefits that lower ratings do not reach, including full VA healthcare with no copays, comprehensive dental care, CHAMPVA coverage for your spouse and children, education assistance for dependents, expedited Social Security disability processing, Space-Available military flights, and protection from routine reexamination of your service-connected conditions. The list below walks through what a 100% P&T VA rating actually gives you and where the fine print matters.
Monthly Compensation
The base payment for a 100% rating with no dependents is $3,938.58 per month in 2026. A veteran with a spouse receives $4,158.17, and a veteran with a spouse and one child receives $4,318.99. Each additional child under 18 adds $109.11, and each child over 18 in a qualifying school program adds $352.45.1Veterans Affairs. Current Veterans Disability Compensation Rates
VA disability compensation is excluded from federal gross income, so none of it is taxed federally.2Internal Revenue Service. Veterans Tax Information and Services Most states exempt VA disability pay from state income tax as well, though the rules are set state by state.
If your conditions leave you essentially housebound, you may qualify for Special Monthly Compensation at the SMC-S level, which raises the base to $4,408.53 per month before dependent additions.3Veterans Affairs. Current Special Monthly Compensation Rates
Why the “Permanent” Part Matters
Veterans with non-permanent ratings can be called in for routine reexaminations, and the VA can reduce the rating if it sees improvement. With a P&T designation, the VA will not schedule periodic reexaminations of your service-connected disabilities. The rating can still be revisited if the original decision involved a clear and unmistakable administrative error, if there is evidence of fraud, or if you file a new claim that prompts a medical exam showing significant improvement. Outside those circumstances, the rating stays. That stability is what makes the rest of the benefits below reliable rather than provisional.
VA Healthcare and Dental
A 100% P&T rating places you in VA Health Care Priority Group 1, the highest enrollment preference.4Veterans Affairs. VA Priority Groups There are no copays for outpatient visits, inpatient care, or prescriptions. Your first three urgent care visits each calendar year are free, with a $30 copay applying only after that.5Veterans Affairs. Current VA Health Care Copay Rates
At the 100% rating you also qualify as Class IV for VA dental purposes, which covers any needed dental treatment, not only care tied to a service-connected dental condition. Cleanings, fillings, crowns, root canals, and dentures are all included.6Veterans Affairs. VA Dental Care Veterans at lower ratings usually only receive dental care directly linked to a service-connected injury.
CHAMPVA for Your Family
Your 100% P&T status opens healthcare coverage for your spouse and dependent children through the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs, provided they are not eligible for TRICARE.7Veterans Affairs. CHAMPVA Benefits Dependents of veterans at lower ratings do not qualify, which makes this one of the most valuable P&T-exclusive benefits.
Each beneficiary pays a $50 annual deductible ($100 per family maximum), and CHAMPVA covers 75% of the allowable amount for covered services after the deductible, leaving your family with the remaining 25%.8VA.gov. CHAMPVA Guidebook
At age 65, a CHAMPVA beneficiary who becomes eligible for Medicare must enroll in Medicare Parts A and B (or a Medicare Advantage plan) to keep CHAMPVA coverage, which then acts as secondary coverage. Beneficiaries who are not Medicare-eligible at 65 need to submit a notice of disallowance from the Social Security Administration to keep CHAMPVA active.9Veterans Affairs. Education Benefits for Dependents
Spouses and children of 100% P&T veterans qualify for the Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance program (DEA, or Chapter 35). It pays $1,574 per month for full-time enrollment at a college or vocational program10Veterans Affairs. Chapter 35 Rates For Survivors And Dependents and can cover up to 36 months of education for programs started on or after August 1, 2018.11Veterans Affairs. Some spouses are also eligible for the Fry Scholarship, which pays at Post-9/11 GI Bill levels including tuition, a housing allowance, and a book stipend. You cannot use both. If your spouse is eligible for both, they must choose one permanently.12Veterans Affairs. Fry Scholarship The Fry Scholarship requires that the service member died in the line of duty, so it applies to surviving families rather than to all 100% P&T households.
Housing Benefits
Home Loan Funding Fee Waiver
Veterans receiving VA disability compensation are exempt from the VA home loan funding fee, which normally ranges from 0.5% to 3.3% of the loan amount depending on loan type, down payment, and whether it’s your first VA loan. On a $350,000 purchase with no down payment, the first-use funding fee would be $7,525.13Veterans Affairs. VA Funding Fee And Loan Closing Costs This exemption is not exclusive to 100% P&T; any veteran with a disability rating qualifies. If you had a VA loan before receiving your rating, you may be entitled to a refund of the funding fee you paid.
Specially Adapted Housing Grants
Veterans with certain severe service-connected disabilities may qualify for grants to modify or build a home. The Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) grant provides up to $126,526 in fiscal year 2026 for modifications like wheelchair ramps, widened doorways, or roll-in showers. The Special Housing Adaptation (SHA) grant offers up to $25,350 for less extensive modifications.14Veterans Affairs. Disability Housing Grants for Veterans Eligibility depends on the nature of the specific disabilities (loss of limb use, blindness, severe burns), not on your overall rating percentage.
State Property Tax Exemptions
Many states offer full or partial property tax exemptions specifically for veterans rated 100% P&T. Some eliminate property taxes entirely on a primary residence; others exempt a dollar amount of assessed value. There is no single federal rule, so check with your state and local tax office.
Expedited Social Security Disability Processing
The Social Security Administration fast-tracks SSDI and SSI claims from veterans rated 100% P&T.15Social Security Administration. Expedited Processing of Veteran’s 100% Disability Claims You have to flag your status when applying: tell the representative in person or by phone, or type “Veteran 100% P&T” in the Remarks section of an online application. You’ll need to provide your VA notification letter confirming the rating. Expedited processing shortens the wait; it doesn’t guarantee approval, since SSA uses its own disability criteria.
Survivor Benefits
Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) provides a monthly payment to your surviving spouse if your death is caused by a service-connected condition. The standard 2026 rate is $1,699.36 per month for a surviving spouse. A surviving child with no eligible surviving spouse receives $717.50.16Veterans Affairs. Current DIC Rates for Spouses and Dependents
Even if your death is unrelated to your service-connected disabilities, your survivors may still qualify for DIC if you held a total disability rating for at least 10 continuous years before death, or for at least five years from your discharge date if that was the entire period since you left service.17Veterans Benefits. Dependency and Indemnity Compensation That 10-year rule builds a safety net over time for causes of death that have nothing to do with your military service.
If the VA owed you compensation at the time of your death that had not been paid, your surviving spouse receives it in full as accrued benefits. Without a surviving spouse, dependent children share the amount equally. The survivor must apply within one year of the veteran’s death using VA Form 21P-534EZ.18Veterans Affairs. Accrued Benefits

Overseas flights to Europe or Asia are not included.20Air Mobility Command. AMC Space Available Travel Page Your accompanied dependents can fly with you on eligible routes.
