VW Transporter Road Tax Cost: Vans, Passenger Models, and EVs

Road tax on a VW Transporter comes down to how DVLA has classified the vehicle. A Transporter registered as a commercial van pays a flat £360 a year. A Transporter registered as a passenger vehicle, such as a Caravelle, California, or ID. Buzz, pays anywhere from £200 to more than £640 a year depending on its CO2 emissions, its date of first registration, and whether its original list price topped £40,000. Two Transporters that look almost identical on a driveway can sit in completely different tax classes, and the annual gap is large enough to matter when you’re buying.

Which Class Is Your Transporter In

Every Transporter is either an N1 goods vehicle or an M1 passenger vehicle. N1 covers goods vehicles up to 3,500 kg maximum mass, which includes the Panel Van, crew van, and most Kombi variants sold without rear passenger windows.1European Alternative Fuels Observatory. EU Classification of Vehicle Types M1 covers passenger vehicles with up to eight seats plus the driver, which pulls in the Caravelle, California camper, and window-fitted Kombis.2Vehicle Certification Agency. Classification of Power-Driven Vehicles and Trailers

The classification is set at the factory and recorded on your V5C. Converting a panel van into a camper or fitting rear seats after purchase can trigger a reclassification into M1, which usually means a higher bill. Commercial Vans: The Flat £360 Rate

If your Transporter is registered as a light goods vehicle under tax class TC39, the annual rate from April 2026 is £360 as a single payment.4GOV.UK. Rates of Vehicle Tax for Cars, Motorcycles, Light Goods Vehicles and Private Light Goods Vehicles April 2026 This applies to all LGVs registered on or after 1 March 2001 up to 3,500 kg, regardless of engine size, fuel, or CO2 output. It covers the vast majority of Transporters on the road.

Monthly direct debit costs slightly more at £378 for the year, and a six-month payment is £198.5GOV.UK. Other Vehicle Tax Rates There is no first-year surcharge, no emissions variation, and no expensive vehicle supplement. The rate stays the same as the van ages.

A small number of Transporters qualify for a reduced rate of £140 a year: Euro 4 compliant vans registered between 1 March 2003 and 31 December 2006, or Euro 5 compliant vans registered between 1 January 2009 and 31 December 2010.4GOV.UK. Passenger Models Registered From April 2017

Caravelles, Californias, and other M1 Transporters first registered on or after 1 April 2017 face a two-part structure. The first year is based on CO2 emissions. Every year after that is a flat standard rate.

Most Caravelle and California models produce CO2 in the 191 to 225 g/km range. For a petrol or RDE2-compliant diesel, that means a first-year charge of £3,420. A non-RDE2 diesel in the same band pays £4,850.6GOV.UK. Vehicle Tax Rates – Cars Registered on or After 1 April 2017 The 4MOTION variants with higher CO2 can land in the 226 to 255 g/km bracket, pushing the first-year cost to £4,850 or £5,690 depending on diesel compliance. Steep figures, but they hit once.

From the second year onward, all petrol and diesel passenger vehicles move to the standard rate of £200 a year.4GOV.UK. Rates of Vehicle Tax for Cars, Motorcycles, Light Goods Vehicles and Private Light Goods Vehicles April 2026

The £40,000 List Price Supplement

Any vehicle with an original list price above £40,000 pays an extra £440 a year on top of the standard rate, for five years starting from the second time the vehicle is taxed.6GOV.UK. Vehicle Tax Rates – Cars Registered on or After 1 April 2017 Most new Caravelle and California models exceed this threshold comfortably. During those five years, the annual bill is £640 rather than £200. If you buy one secondhand within that window, you inherit the supplement for whatever years remain.

Passenger Models Registered Before April 2017

Passenger Transporters registered between 1 March 2001 and 31 March 2017 stay on an emissions band for life instead of moving to a flat standard rate. The annual rates from April 2026:

  • Band H (166–175 g/km): £325
  • Band I (176–185 g/km): £360
  • Band J (186–200 g/km): £410
  • Band K (201–225 g/km): £445
  • Band L (226–255 g/km): £760
  • Band M (over 255 g/km): £790

These figures come from the current DVLA rate tables.7GOV.UK. Vehicle Tax Rates – Cars Registered Between 1 March 2001 and 31 March 2017 A pre-2017 Caravelle sitting in Band K at £445 a year costs more than a post-2017 model in its standard-rate years at £200. Older does not always mean cheaper to tax, so anyone shopping used should check the CO2 figure on the V5C before making assumptions.

Electric Transporters and the ID. Buzz

Free VED for electric vehicles ended on 1 April 2025. Electric cars, vans, and motorcycles now pay vehicle tax on the same footing as petrol and diesel.8GOV.UK. Vehicles Exempt From Vehicle Tax

For an ID. Buzz classified as a passenger vehicle and registered on or after 1 April 2025, the first-year rate is £10, followed by the standard £200 a year.9GOV.UK. Vehicle Tax for Electric, Zero and Low Emission Vehicles The £40,000 supplement applies too, so an ID. Buzz GTX or higher-trim model can owe £640 a year for five years from its second licence.

Electric Transporters registered as light goods vehicles, such as the ID. Buzz Cargo or ABT e-Transporter, pay the same £360 annual flat rate as a diesel panel van.4GOV.UK. Rates of Vehicle Tax for Cars, Motorcycles, Light Goods Vehicles and Private Light Goods Vehicles April 2026

Historic Transporters

Own an early Transporter built before 1 January 1986? You can apply for the historic vehicle exemption and pay nothing from 1 April 2026.10GOV.UK. MOT and Vehicle Tax – Historic Vehicle Tax Exemption The rolling 40-year exemption covers early T3s and all earlier generations. If the exact build date is unknown but the vehicle was first registered before 8 January 1986, it still qualifies. You must still tax the vehicle formally through DVLA even though the amount due is zero.

What Happens If You Do Not Pay

Missing a renewal triggers an automatic £80 late licensing penalty, reduced to £40 if paid within 33 days.11Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency. DVLA Enforcement of Vehicle Tax, Registration and Insurance Offences Ignore it and the debt goes to a collection agency.

Driving or parking an untaxed Transporter on a public road is worse. DVLA can clamp or impound the vehicle, and release requires paying the outstanding tax plus a surety deposit of up to £700 for vans and commercial vehicles.12GOV.UK. Get a Clamped or Impounded Vehicle Released An untaxed vehicle kept off-road needs a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) on file, or it remains liable to clamping wherever it sits.
