Road tax on a VW Golf depends on three things: the date it was first registered, its CO2 emissions, and, for newer cars, its original list price. A standard petrol or diesel Golf registered after April 2017 pays £200 a year from its second year onward.1GOV.UK. Vehicle Tax Rates Older Golfs use one of two earlier systems, and the VW Golf tax band you end up in is fixed at first registration and travels with the car.
How to Check Your Golf’s Band
Enter your registration number into the DVLA’s free vehicle enquiry service and you’ll see the tax status and CO2 figure straight away.2GOV.UK. Get Vehicle Information From DVLA The same CO2 figure sits on the V5C logbook in grams per kilometre. If your Golf was registered before March 2001, what you need instead is the engine capacity in cubic centimetres, because those cars are taxed by engine size.
Golfs Registered Before March 2001
This covers the Mk1 through most of the Mk4. There are only two rates, split at 1549cc, and emissions play no part.3Legislation.gov.uk. Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994
- 1549cc or smaller: £230 per year
- Over 1549cc: £375 per year
Most 1.4 and 1.6-litre Golfs from this period sit at or below the threshold. The VR6 and some 1.8-litre turbo variants go over it.4GOV.UK. Vehicle Tax Rates – Cars and Light Goods Vehicles Registered Before 1 March 2001
Historic Vehicle Exemption
From 1 April 2026, any vehicle built before 1 January 1986 qualifies for a VED exemption. If the exact build date isn’t known, first registration before 8 January 1986 still qualifies.5GOV.UK. MOT and Vehicle Tax – Historic Vehicle Tax Exemption That takes in every Mk1 Golf and the early Mk2s. You still have to tax the car each year, but the charge is £0. The exemption drops away if the vehicle is used commercially.
Golfs Registered Between March 2001 and March 2017
This bracket takes in the later Mk4, the Mk5, the Mk6, and most Mk7s. Cars sit in one of 13 CO2 bands, A through M, set at first registration and permanent thereafter.6GOV.UK. Vehicle Tax Rates – Cars Registered Between 1 March 2001 and 31 March 2017
A Golf BlueMotion TDI under 100 g/km sits in Band A, the cheapest. A standard 1.4 TSI usually lands in Band D or E, roughly 121–140 g/km. A Golf GTI or Golf R with higher emissions can reach Band J or K, 186–225 g/km. Band M applies above 255 g/km, which no standard Golf hits. The pound figures for each band shift with the budget, so check the current GOV.UK table for the year you’re paying.
Golfs Registered After April 2017
The Mk7.5 and Mk8 use a two-stage system: a first-year rate tied to CO2, then a flat standard rate from year two.
First-Year Rate
First-year charges run from £10 for a zero-emission car up to £5,690 for anything over 255 g/km.7GOV.UK. Vehicle Tax Rates – Cars Registered on or After 1 April 2017 A typical 1.5 TSI at 120–130 g/km currently pays a first-year rate in the low hundreds; a Golf R sits higher. When you buy new from a dealer, this first-year cost is normally built into the on-the-road price.
Standard Rate From Year Two
From the second year, every petrol, diesel, and alternative-fuel Golf pays a flat £200. Zero-emission cars now pay the same £200.8GOV.UK. V149 – Rates of Vehicle Tax – April 2026 A 99 g/km car and a 199 g/km car pay the same. The only variation from year two is the expensive car supplement.
The Expensive Car Supplement
If your Golf’s list price when new was above £40,000, an extra £440 a year applies for five years, starting from the second time the vehicle is taxed. That brings the annual bill to £640.7GOV.UK. Vehicle Tax Rates – Cars Registered on or After 1 April 2017 The trigger is the manufacturer’s list price, not what you paid. A secondhand Golf R that was £42,000 new still attracts the supplement even if you bought it for £28,000. Most Golf variants stay below £40,000, but a well-optioned Golf R or high-spec Golf GTE can cross the line depending on model year.
Electric and Hybrid Golfs
April 2025 changed the picture for electric and alternative-fuel cars. Fully electric vehicles used to pay nothing, and alternative-fuel cars got a £10 discount. Both concessions have gone.9GOV.UK. Vehicle Tax for Electric, Zero and Low Emission Vehicles
A zero-emission car registered on or after 1 April 2025 pays £10 in year one, then £200 a year like everything else. The expensive car supplement threshold for electric cars sits higher, at £50,000, with the same £440 for five years above that.8GOV.UK. V149 – Rates of Vehicle Tax – April 2026
An e-Golf or Golf GTE first registered between 2001 and March 2017 stays in whatever A–M band it received at registration. An e-Golf first registered between April 2017 and March 2025, which was paying £0, now pays the £200 standard rate from April 2025 onward.10House of Commons Library. Vehicle Excise Duty (VED)
Paying and Spreading the Cost
You can pay annually, every six months, or monthly by direct debit. A single lump sum has no premium. Monthly or six-monthly payments carry a 5% DVLA surcharge.11GOV.UK. Vehicle Tax Direct Debit Payments On a £200 rate, monthly works out to £210 across the year. On the £640 combined rate with the supplement, it works out to £672.8GOV.UK. V149 – Rates of Vehicle Tax – April 2026
If the Golf Is Off the Road
If your Golf is kept on private land and not driven, you don’t need to pay VED. File a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) through the DVLA. You get a refund for any full months of tax remaining, and the SORN stays in place until you tax the car again.12GOV.UK. Register Your Vehicle as Off the Road (SORN) You cannot drive on public roads at all while a SORN is in force, not even for a short trip.
Penalties for Not Paying
Letting tax lapse while you’re still the registered keeper triggers an £80 late licensing penalty, reduced to £40 if paid within 33 days. Driving an untaxed car brings an out-of-court settlement of £30 plus one and a half times the outstanding tax, and refusal sends the case to a magistrates’ court where fines can reach £1,000 or five times the tax owed.13GOV.UK. DVLA Enforcement of Vehicle Tax, Registration and Insurance Offences DVLA can also clamp or impound untaxed vehicles found on public roads, and release fees add up quickly.14GOV.UK. Get a Clamped or Impounded Vehicle Released Using a car with an active SORN is treated more harshly still: £30 plus twice the outstanding tax, with a court maximum of £2,500 or five times the tax owed.
