VW Amarok tax treatment in the UK splits across three regimes that no longer line up. For VAT and vehicle excise duty, the Amarok is still a commercial vehicle. For income tax and benefit-in-kind, HMRC changed the rules on 6 April 2025: new double cab pickups are now taxed as company cars, while Amaroks purchased, leased, or ordered before that date keep the cheaper van treatment until the vehicle is disposed of, the lease ends, or 5 April 2029 arrives, whichever comes first.
HMRC’s Split Classification
Before April 2025, HMRC used a single test borrowed from VAT law: a double cab pickup with a payload of one tonne or more counted as a van for income tax. That gave most Amarok drivers the flat-rate van benefit charge instead of the CO2-based company car calculation.
From 6 April 2025, HMRC dropped the payload test for income tax. Double cab pickups are now assessed on their “primary suitability,” and HMRC’s view is that most of them are primarily suitable for carrying passengers rather than goods. That puts them into the car benefit-in-kind rules.1GOV.UK. EIM23151 – Car Benefit: Double Cab Pickups 6 April 2025 Onwards
VAT is separate and unchanged. A double cab pickup with a payload of one tonne or more is still a commercial vehicle for VAT.2HM Revenue & Customs. Motoring Expenses (VAT Notice 700/64) The result is an unusual split: the same Amarok can be a car for income tax and a van for VAT.
Transitional Rules for Amaroks Ordered Before April 2025
If your employer purchased, leased, or ordered the Amarok before 6 April 2025, the old van treatment continues to apply. The transitional period runs until whichever of these comes first: the vehicle is sold or disposed of, the lease expires, or 5 April 2029.1GOV.UK. EIM23151 – Car Benefit: Double Cab Pickups 6 April 2025 Onwards
Moving the Amarok between employees within the same business during the transitional window doesn’t break the van treatment, provided there is no disposal or lease expiry. Once the window closes, the vehicle falls under the car rules regardless of when it was originally bought. Anyone running a pre-April-2025 Amarok as a company vehicle should treat 5 April 2029 as a hard deadline.
Benefit in Kind Under Van Treatment
For Amaroks that still qualify as vans, the benefit-in-kind charge is a flat annual figure rather than the CO2-based percentage applied to cars. For the 2026 to 2027 tax year, the van benefit charge is £4,170.3GOV.UK. Expenses and Benefits: Company Vans and Fuel – Work Out the Value
At 20% income tax that costs the employee £834 a year. At 40%, £1,668. The vehicle’s value and the amount of private use don’t change the figure, with one exception. If private use is genuinely insignificant, the charge drops to nil. HMRC reads “insignificant” strictly: a few days at most across the whole tax year, irregular and intermittent, and minor in absolute terms rather than just as a proportion of overall mileage.4GOV.UK. EIM22745 – Van Benefit From 2005/06: Definitions – Insignificant Private Use
Benefit in Kind Under Car Treatment
Amaroks purchased or ordered from 6 April 2025 onward are taxed as company cars. The charge is a CO2-based percentage applied to the vehicle’s list price, and for a diesel pickup the resulting bill is a lot higher than the flat van rate. Company car BIK percentages currently reach 37% for high-emission vehicles, so a diesel Amarok with a list price above £48,000 can generate an annual taxable benefit well into five figures. Against £4,170 under the van charge, the gap is substantial.
The practical effect is that a new Amarok is no longer a tax-efficient company vehicle. Businesses looking at fleets have stronger reasons to keep a pre-April-2025 Amarok running through the transitional window or to consider lower-emission alternatives where the BIK percentage is more workable.
Van Fuel Benefit
When an employer covers fuel for private journeys in a van, a separate flat charge applies. For 2026 to 2027 the van fuel benefit is £798.5GOV.UK. Van Benefit Charge and Fuel Benefit Charges for Cars and Vans for Tax Year 2026 to 2027 That’s £159.60 a year at 20% and £319.20 at 40%. It only applies to Amaroks still under van treatment. For company car Amaroks, fuel benefit follows the car multiplier and the CO2 percentage, producing a much larger figure.
Accepting the van fuel benefit is worth it when the value of the fuel provided for personal use exceeds the tax cost. Anyone doing significant private mileage in a diesel Amarok will almost certainly come out ahead paying £798 as a benefit rather than buying the fuel. Minimal personal mileage points the other way: pay for private fuel yourself and opt out.
Reclaiming VAT on an Amarok
The April 2025 changes did not touch VAT. HMRC still classifies vehicles for VAT by payload, and a double cab pickup with a payload of one tonne or more is not a car.2HM Revenue & Customs. Motoring Expenses (VAT Notice 700/64) That distinction matters because VAT on cars generally can’t be recovered, while VAT on commercial vehicles can.
If you are VAT-registered and use the Amarok exclusively for business, you can reclaim the full 20% VAT paid at purchase. With Amarok prices starting around £48,000 before VAT, the recovery can be more than £9,500. Where use is mixed, HMRC expects the claim to be apportioned to reflect actual business use. Incidental private use of a commercial vehicle is generally treated as negligible and doesn’t block the claim, but regular personal trips call for a fair split.6GOV.UK. Payload, Accessories, and the One-Tonne Line
The one-tonne payload rule still governs VAT and still matters for income tax during the transitional period. Payload is the gross vehicle weight shown on the weight plate or V5C minus the kerb weight, including standard equipment and a full tank of fuel.
Some Amarok variants sit close to the one-tonne threshold, and permanent accessories can pull them below it. Hardtop canopies, bull bars, integrated toolboxes, winch bumpers, and fixed storage systems all add to kerb weight and reduce usable payload. If those additions bring the effective payload below 1,000 kg, HMRC can argue the vehicle is no longer a commercial vehicle for VAT. The consequences are serious: blocked VAT recovery on the purchase, potential repayment of VAT already reclaimed, and loss of van classification for any remaining transitional BIK treatment. Check the weight plate for your specific variant before committing to heavy modifications.
Vehicle Excise Duty
The Amarok falls under tax class TC39 for light goods vehicles, which carries a flat annual rate regardless of CO2 emissions. The current annual charge is £360 for a 12-month payment.7GOV.UK. Vehicle Tax Rates – Other Vehicle Tax Rates That’s much cheaper than the tiered rates for passenger cars, where high-emission vehicles can face several times the charge. The TC39 classification is tied to the vehicle’s registration category, not to how it’s taxed for income tax, so the April 2025 rule change does not affect VED.
Employer National Insurance
Employers pay Class 1A National Insurance on the van benefit and fuel benefit they provide. The current rate is 13.8%.8GOV.UK. Class 1A National Insurance Contributions on Benefits in Kind, Termination Payments and Sporting Testimonial Payments On the £4,170 van benefit that adds roughly £575 a year; on the £798 fuel benefit, about £110. The combined employer NIC for providing an Amarok with private-use fuel under van treatment sits around £685 a year.
Amaroks on car treatment scale the employer NIC bill against the much higher car BIK value. It’s easy to overlook during fleet planning and adds up quickly across multiple vehicles. Employers must report these benefits on a P11D for each employee with private use.
Capital Allowances on Business Purchases
Businesses that buy an Amarok outright can claim capital allowances against taxable profits. Under the Annual Investment Allowance, qualifying expenditure on plant and machinery, including commercial vehicles, can be deducted in full in the year of purchase up to the current AIA limit.9GOV.UK. Claim Capital Allowances: Annual Investment Allowance An Amarok purchase will typically fall well within the allowance for most small and medium businesses.
Whether the vehicle attracts the more generous commercial vehicle treatment or the restricted car treatment for capital allowances turns on its classification. Amaroks bought before April 2025 should still qualify as vans. New purchases from April 2025 onward, where HMRC treats the vehicle as a car for income tax, sit in less settled territory and are worth running past an accountant before you commit.
