Volkswagen company car tax is worked out by taking the car’s P11D value, multiplying it by a Benefit in Kind (BiK) percentage set by the car’s CO2 emissions, and then multiplying that taxable benefit by your income tax rate. For 2025/26, the BiK percentage runs from 3% on a fully electric ID.3 or ID.4 up to 37% on higher-emitting petrol and diesel models, so the same £30,000 list price can produce wildly different annual tax bills depending on which Volkswagen you drive.
The Calculation, With Numbers
Three figures decide what you pay: the P11D value (essentially the list price including VAT and factory options), the BiK percentage tied to the car’s CO2 emissions, and your marginal income tax rate.
Take a Volkswagen Golf with a P11D value of £30,000 sitting in the 29% band. The taxable benefit is £30,000 × 29% = £8,700. A basic-rate taxpayer at 20% owes £1,740 for the year, roughly £145 a month. A higher-rate taxpayer at 40% pays £3,480 on the same car. The framework linking each emissions bracket to a percentage is set out in the Income Tax (Earnings and Pensions) Act 2003.1Legislation.gov.uk. Income Tax (Earnings and Pensions) Act 2003 – Section 121
BiK Percentage Bands for 2025/26 and 2026/27
HMRC publishes a graduated table assigning a BiK percentage to each CO2 bracket in grams per kilometre. For 2025/26 the scale starts at 3% for zero-emission cars and climbs in roughly one-point steps to a 37% cap at 170 g/km and above.2GOV.UK. Work Out the Appropriate Percentage for Company Car Benefits (480: Appendix 2) For 2026/27 the structure stays the same, but the electric floor rises to 4% and the lower hybrid bands each go up by one point.
Key thresholds for 2025/26, with the 2026/27 rate in brackets:
- 0 g/km (fully electric): 3% (4%)
- 1–50 g/km, 130+ miles electric range: 3% (4%)
- 1–50 g/km, 70–129 miles electric range: 6% (7%)
- 1–50 g/km, 40–69 miles electric range: 9% (10%)
- 1–50 g/km, 30–39 miles electric range: 13% (14%)
- 51–54 g/km: 16% (17%)
- 100–104 g/km: 26% (26%)
- 155–159 g/km: 37% (37%)
- 170 g/km and above: 37% (37%)
Where Common Volkswagens Land
Fully Electric: ID.3 and ID.4
Zero tailpipe emissions put the ID.3 and ID.4 at the very bottom of the scale: 3% for 2025/26, 4% for 2026/27.2GOV.UK. Work Out the Appropriate Percentage for Company Car Benefits (480: Appendix 2) On an ID.3 with a P11D value around £35,000, a basic-rate taxpayer owes roughly £210 in company car tax for the whole of 2025/26. That is a small fraction of what an equivalently priced combustion car would produce.
Plug-in Hybrids: The Golf GTE and Others
Plug-in hybrids are banded by their WLTP-certified electric-only range, so the further the car goes on the battery, the lower the percentage.3GOV.UK. Calculate Tax on Employees’ Company Cars The Golf GTE has a WLTP electric range of around 50 miles, putting it in the 40-to-69-mile band at 9% for 2025/26 and 10% for 2026/27. A plug-in hybrid with a shorter 30 to 39 mile electric range sits at 13% for 2025/26 and 14% the following year.2GOV.UK. Work Out the Appropriate Percentage for Company Car Benefits (480: Appendix 2)
Petrol and Diesel: Tiguan, Passat, Golf
A conventional Tiguan or Passat with emissions between 120 and 160 g/km will typically land in the 30% to 37% range. On a diesel Volkswagen the fuel type matters: diesels that do not meet the Real Driving Emissions 2 standard (Euro 6d) carry a 4% surcharge on top of the standard percentage, still subject to the 37% cap.3GOV.UK. Calculate Tax on Employees’ Company Cars Most Volkswagen diesels built in the last few years meet RDE2 and avoid the surcharge. Your employer signals which applies by selecting fuel type “F” for RDE2-compliant diesel or “D” for older engines on the P11D or payroll report.
Getting the P11D Value Right
The P11D value is not what your employer actually paid. It is the car’s published list price on the day before it was first registered, including VAT and delivery, plus any factory-fitted options or accessories, even those bundled in at a discount. Leather, a technology pack, larger wheels: all add to the figure.
Two things can bring it down. A one-off capital contribution you make toward the car reduces the P11D value by up to £5,000 before the BiK calculation.4GOV.UK. How to Work Out the Benefit of a Company Car (480: Chapter 12) The benefit is also scaled down if the car was only available to you for part of the tax year, say from September rather than April.
Official CO2 emissions and technical details sit on the V5C registration document and in Volkswagen’s published pricing guides. A small error in either figure feeds through the whole calculation and can leave your tax code wrong for the rest of the year.
If Your Employer Pays for Private Fuel
When the employer pays for fuel used on personal journeys, a separate charge stacks on top of the car benefit. It is a fixed multiplier times the same BiK percentage. For 2025/26 the multiplier is £28,200, rising to £29,200 for 2026/27.5GOV.UK. Travel – Mileage and Fuel Rates and Allowances
On a petrol Volkswagen in the 29% band the 2025/26 fuel benefit is £28,200 × 29% = £8,178. A basic-rate taxpayer picks up an extra £1,636 in tax for the year on the fuel alone, which often outweighs any perceived saving from free petrol. Reimbursing the employer in full for private fuel in the tax year takes the charge to nil.
Electric Volkswagens escape this entirely. HMRC does not treat electricity as a “fuel” for benefit-in-kind purposes, so free workplace charging on an ID.3 or ID.4 produces no fuel benefit charge.
Salary Sacrifice on a Volkswagen
Many drivers access a Volkswagen company car through salary sacrifice: you give up part of your gross salary in exchange for the car. The BiK charge still applies, but because the sacrificed pay is gross, you also save income tax and employee National Insurance on that amount. For high-emitting cars, the optional remuneration rules limit the advantage. For electric vehicles the BiK charge is so low that salary sacrifice tends to deliver real savings, and an electric Volkswagen through such a scheme often costs less than buying or leasing the same car privately once you fold in the tax and NIC savings alongside employer-arranged insurance and maintenance.6GOV.UK. Company Cars and Fuel: What’s Exempt
Salary sacrifice does not remove the tax. The company car is still reported to HMRC and the BiK charge still applies; the arrangement just changes the overall cost to you.
How and When You Actually Pay It
Once HMRC has the P11D information, your tax code is adjusted so the benefit is collected through monthly payroll deductions. A K-prefix code means the value of your benefits exceeds your personal allowance, and the extra tax is taken through each pay packet across the year rather than in a single bill.
From April 2027, HMRC will require most employers to report benefits in kind through payroll software in real time, replacing the annual P11D for the majority of benefits including company cars.7GOV.UK. Technical Note: Mandating the Reporting of Benefits in Kind and Expenses Through Payroll Software: An Update The deadline was originally April 2026 and has been pushed back by a year. P11D forms will stay temporarily for a few specific benefits such as employment-related loans and accommodation. For company cars, the practical effect is that the tax on your Volkswagen will show up on your payslip each month rather than being adjusted through your tax code after the fact.
