VITA free tax preparation is an IRS-sponsored program that prepares and e-files federal and state tax returns at no cost for people who earn roughly $69,000 or less, have a disability, or speak limited English. IRS-certified volunteers handle the whole return, including credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit that often go unclaimed. Most sites run from late January through the April filing deadline; the 2026 season opens January 26.
Who Qualifies
Three groups are eligible: taxpayers with gross income around $69,000 or less, people with disabilities, and limited-English speakers.1Internal Revenue Service. Free Tax Return Preparation for Qualifying Taxpayers You only need to meet one. The income figure is a general guideline, and partner organizations running individual sites may apply it a little differently.
There is no age or citizenship requirement. If you file with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number instead of a Social Security number, VITA can still help you. Active-duty military members and their families are served at many installations.
What VITA Can and Can’t Prepare
Volunteers are trained for the most common situations: W-2 wages, interest and dividends, certain retirement distributions, and modest self-employment income. They apply the major credits, including the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and education credits.
Self-employment on Schedule C is in scope only if total business expenses are $50,000 or less, the business shows no net loss, and there are no employees.2Internal Revenue Service. Publication 4012-A VITA/TCE Volunteer Resource Guide Cross any one of those lines and the entire return is out of scope. Also out of scope: rental income on Schedule E, complex capital gains and losses, foreign income or foreign tax credits, and non-deductible IRA contributions that require Form 8606.
If your return falls outside what VITA can do, the site will tell you but cannot prepare part of it. Free File and paid preparers are covered at the end of this article.
Finding a Site
The fastest option is the IRS VITA/TCE locator at freetaxassistance.for.irs.gov.3Tax Assistance from the IRS. Site Locator Enter your ZIP code and a distance radius, and you’ll see sites with addresses, hours, and services, including virtual preparation if you’d rather work remotely. You can also call 800-906-9887.1Internal Revenue Service. Free Tax Return Preparation for Qualifying Taxpayers
Scheduling varies. Some sites take appointments, some are walk-in, and some use a drop-off model where you leave your documents and come back later to review and sign. Virtual preparation works by securely exchanging documents online so a volunteer can prepare the return remotely. If you need bilingual help or sign language interpretation, many sites list language services in the locator, and you can request accommodations when you book.
If you’re 60 or older, the companion Tax Counseling for the Elderly program may fit better. TCE volunteers get extra training on pensions and Social Security taxation.1Internal Revenue Service. Free Tax Return Preparation for Qualifying Taxpayers The largest TCE provider is AARP Tax-Aide, and you do not need to be an AARP member to use it. Call 888-227-7669 between January and April to find a location.
What to Bring
Missing one document can mean a second trip. Gather these before you go:
- A valid government-issued photo ID for every adult on the return.
- Social Security cards or ITIN letters for you, your spouse, and each dependent.4Internal Revenue Service. Checklist for Free Tax Return Preparation
- All W-2s and 1099s reporting wages, interest, dividends, retirement distributions, or other income.
- Form 1095-A if you had Health Insurance Marketplace coverage.
- Records for deductions and credits: education expenses, childcare costs with the provider’s tax ID, and anything else you plan to claim.
- A voided check or bank statement showing routing and account numbers for direct deposit.
- Your prior-year return, or at least your prior-year adjusted gross income, which is needed to validate an e-filed return. First-time filers enter zero.5Internal Revenue Service. Validating Your Electronically Filed Tax Return
- Your Identity Protection PIN, if the IRS has issued one. Without it, an e-filed return will be rejected.6Internal Revenue Service. FAQs About the Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN)
If you’re filing jointly and the return will be e-filed, both spouses must be at the appointment to sign the electronic filing authorization.4Internal Revenue Service. Checklist for Free Tax Return Preparation This trips people up often enough to plan around.
What Happens at the Appointment
Every appointment starts with Form 13614-C, an intake and interview sheet covering your personal information, income, and possible deductions.7Internal Revenue Service. IRS Courseware – Intake and Interview Process – Form 13614-C You fill it out, and the volunteer goes through it with you to confirm nothing is missing and the return is in scope. They then prepare your federal and state returns in IRS-provided software.
A second volunteer who didn’t work on your return does an independent quality review. IRS policy prohibits self-review, so the preparer cannot check their own work.8Internal Revenue Service. Publication 5166 VITA/TCE Volunteer Quality Site Requirements After the review, you look over the return, sign the e-file authorization, and the volunteer transmits it to the IRS and your state. You’ll have a confirmation of submission before you leave.
When to Expect Your Refund
Because VITA returns are e-filed, they follow the normal processing timeline. The IRS issues most refunds in fewer than 21 days when you e-file and choose direct deposit.9Internal Revenue Service. IRS Opens 2026 Filing Season Some returns get flagged for extra review, which pushes that longer. Check status with the IRS “Where’s My Refund?” tool or the IRS2Go app, usually within 24 hours of e-filing.
If VITA Can’t Help
IRS Free File lets taxpayers with an adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less use brand-name tax software at no charge.10Internal Revenue Service. 2026 Tax Filing Season Opens With Several Free Filing Options Available It handles more complex situations than VITA does, including rental income, capital gains, and larger self-employment returns. You prepare the return yourself, so you need some comfort with tax forms, but the interview-style guidance makes it workable for most people.
For returns with real complexity, a paid preparer is usually the practical choice. Fees for a basic federal and state return typically run $100 to $300, and returns with business income, rentals, or multiple states cost more. Confirm your preparer has a valid Preparer Tax Identification Number, which the IRS requires of anyone paid to prepare returns.
