A visa dropbox appointment in India lets you renew certain U.S. nonimmigrant visas by dropping documents at a Visa Application Center instead of sitting for a consular interview. Since October 1, 2025, the State Department has narrowed the interview waiver sharply: most work and student categories no longer qualify, and the old age-based exemptions for children under 14 and adults over 79 are gone. Check where you stand before you pay anything, because the Machine Readable Visa fee is nonrefundable.
Who Still Qualifies in 2026
Under the current rules, only a small set of applicants can use the dropbox:
- B-1/B-2 visitor visa renewals, where your prior visa was issued for full validity, expired within the past 12 months, and you were at least 18 when it was issued.
- H-2A temporary agricultural worker renewals, under the same full-validity, 12-month, age-18 conditions.
- Diplomatic and official visa applicants in categories like A, G, and NATO.
You also have to apply from your country of nationality or usual residence, you cannot have a prior visa refusal that was never overcome or waived, and you must have no apparent ineligibility for the visa you’re seeking. If your previous visa expired more than 12 months ago, the dropbox is closed to you regardless of category. The pandemic-era 48-month window has been fully rolled back.
H-1B, L-1, and F-1 Holders
Specialty occupation, intracompany transfer, and student visa holders are no longer eligible for the dropbox. These categories were covered under earlier versions of the interview waiver but were removed in the tightening that took effect through 2025. Fees You’ll Pay
The MRV fee has to be paid before the scheduling system will release appointment slots. Rates depend on category:
- B-1/B-2 visitor: $185
- H, L, O, P, Q petition-based: $205
- E treaty trader or investor: $315
- K fiancé or spouse of a U.S. citizen: $265

Documents to Bring

- Your current passport with at least six months of remaining validity
- Any previous passport containing your most recent U.S. visa
- The printed DS-160 confirmation page
- The MRV fee payment receipt
- The submission letter generated by the scheduling portal
- One recent photo meeting State Department specifications

Photo Rules That Trip People Up
The photo has to be in color, taken within the last six months, against a plain white or off-white background, with your head filling between 50% and 69% of the image height. Eyeglasses are not allowed, and this is not limited to frames that block the eyes. The only exception is a signed statement from a medical professional explaining why the glasses cannot be removed, such as after recent ocular surgery. Scheduling Through UStraveldocs
The U.S. Embassy India directs applicants to the UStraveldocs portal for visa appointments, dropbox included.7U.S. Embassy & Consulates in India. Nonimmigrant Visas Create a profile, enter your DS-160 confirmation number and MRV receipt number, and answer the eligibility screening questions. If the system agrees you qualify for the waiver, it will offer a dropbox appointment instead of an interview slot.
The portal then generates a submission letter that confirms your waiver eligibility and lists the locations where you can deliver your package. Print it. The Visa Application Center won’t accept your documents without it. Verify your DS-160 barcode and passport number on the letter before your appointment; corrections at this stage are slow.
Where to Submit: VACs and Dropoff Centers
India has two kinds of submission locations. The five full Visa Application Centers are in Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, and New Delhi. The six smaller Document Dropoff Centers are in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Cochin, Jalandhar, and Pune. At your appointment, you or an authorized representative hands over the package. Staff confirm that the required items are present. There is no interview. You’ll leave with a tracking acknowledgment.
If someone else drops off for you, they need a signed authorization letter from you and a copy of your government-issued ID. A missing document usually means the center turns the submission away and you reschedule.
Tracking and Getting Your Passport Back
Track your application through the Consular Electronic Application Center using your DS-160 barcode and passport number. Dropbox processing generally runs a few weeks, but individual cases vary and administrative processing can stretch much longer.

A representative collecting for you needs your signed authorization letter and a copy of your ID.
If Your Case Is Pulled or Delayed
A dropbox submission is not an automatic approval. A consular officer can pull any application for an in-person interview after the fact, and you’ll be told through the tracking system or by email to schedule one.
If the officer refuses your application under Section 221(g) and asks for specific documents or information, you have one year from the refusal date to provide what was requested. Administrative processing timelines are unpredictable. There is no expedite process, and the embassy will not give completion estimates for individual cases. If you have genuine hardship, the State Department suggests contacting the consular section where you filed, though that rarely speeds anything up. Do not book nonrefundable travel until your tracking shows “Issued” and your passport is back in your hands.
