Veteran ICN Number: Where to Find It and Why It Matters

Your veteran ICN number is the Integrated Control Number the Department of Veterans Affairs assigns to you as a permanent, unique identifier across every VA system. It is 17 characters long, formatted as 10 digits, the letter “V,” and 6 more digits (for example, 1234567890V123456).1Veterans Health Administration. The ICN has largely replaced the Social Security Number for VA purposes, tying your health records, benefits information, and claims together across every VA facility and department.

Where to Find Your ICN

There are a few reliable places to look, depending on what you have on hand.

VA Referral Documents

If you have been referred to a community care provider, your ICN appears on the referral issued through the VA’s Health Share Referral Manager (HSRM). It also prints on the first page of VA Form 10-7080, the offline version of that referral.1Veterans Health Administration. Your Veteran Health Identification Card

The magnetic stripe on your Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC) stores your ICN, labeled as the “VA Internal Control Number from Master Veteran Index.” You cannot read it by looking at the card, but any VA facility that swipes the card can pull it up for you.2U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Why the ICN Matters for Community Care Claims

The most common reason veterans need to track down their ICN is community care billing. When a non-VA doctor or hospital treats you under VA authorization, they are required to include your 17-character ICN in the insured’s ID field when they submit the claim. A missing or incorrect ICN is one of the most common reasons VA claims get rejected, and rejected claims can take months to sort out.5U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. File a Claim for Veteran Care – Information for Providers Providers can fall back on your SSN if they do not have the ICN, but giving them the correct number up front avoids the problem entirely.

The ICN also stitches your records together across the VA. Prescriptions, lab results, and benefits decisions from any VA facility trace back to the same number, so a specialist at a new location can pull your history without hunting through fragmented files.

How the ICN Differs From Your SSN, File Number, and DoD ID

Veterans accumulate several ID numbers over the years, and they are not interchangeable on VA forms.

Social Security Number

The SSN was historically the VA’s primary identifier for health records and claims. The agency has been systematically replacing it with the ICN to reduce privacy and identity-theft risk, since no sensitive personal information is embedded in the ICN itself. An SSN is now only supposed to be used when federal law requires it or in limited emergencies, such as unauthorized community emergency care where the ICN is unknown.1Veterans Health Administration. DoD ID Number (EDIPI)

The Electronic Data Interchange Personal Identifier (EDIPI), commonly called the DoD ID number, is assigned by the Department of Defense to anyone with a direct DoD relationship and appears on military ID cards.7DoD Procurement Toolbox.
