VET TEC 2.0: Eligibility, Covered Programs, and GI Bill Impact

VET TEC 2.0 is a Department of Veterans Affairs education benefit that pays tuition, fees, a monthly housing allowance, and a books stipend for eligible veterans enrolled in short, high-technology training programs of 6 to 28 weeks. The program was authorized by the Senator Elizabeth Dole 21st Century Veterans Healthcare and Benefits Improvement Act, signed into law on January 2, 2025, and the VA announced its launch on June 2, 2026, though the application had not yet opened as of that date.1Congress.gov. Who Qualifies

You are eligible if you were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable, or if you are an active-duty service member within 180 days of separation. Two additional gates apply to everyone: at least 36 months of active-duty service, and an age under 62 at the time the VA approves your application.2U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. VET TEC 2.0

You do not need to qualify for the GI Bill or any other VA education benefit first. Veterans who have already used all 48 months of VA education entitlement can still apply.4VA Benefits Administration. VET TEC 2.0 Training Provider FAQs

One boundary worth noting: Certificates of Eligibility issued under the original 2019–2024 pilot are not valid for VET TEC 2.0. Everyone will need to submit a new application through the process the VA is still building.2U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. VET TEC 2.0

What the Benefit Pays

VET TEC 2.0 covers the full cost of tuition and fees at approved training programs. On top of that, participants receive a monthly housing allowance and a stipend for books and supplies.2U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. VET TEC 2.0

The housing allowance uses the Post-9/11 GI Bill formula, which is tied to the military Basic Allowance for Housing for an E-5 with dependents. For an in-person program, the rate is based on the zip code of the training facility. For an online-only program, the amount is half the national average BAH rate.5VA Office of Inspector General. Which Programs Qualify

Approved programs are non-degree courses in one of five fields: computer programming, computer software, media application, data processing, or information sciences. Each program must run between 6 and 28 weeks, and the provider must have been running it successfully for at least a year before the VA approves it.4VA Benefits Administration. Approval does not carry over from the original pilot. Every provider has to sign a new participation agreement and be re-approved, so a bootcamp that took VET TEC students before is not automatically in the new program. How It Affects Your GI Bill Entitlement

This is the biggest change from the original pilot. If you have remaining entitlement under the Post-9/11 GI Bill, the Montgomery GI Bill Active Duty, or the Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance program, the VA will charge one month of that entitlement for every month of full-time VET TEC 2.0 training.4VA Benefits Administration. The pilot did the opposite, preserving GI Bill benefits, which was a major selling point. Under VET TEC 2.0, veterans with entitlement they want to save for a degree program later should weigh that trade-off before enrolling. Veterans with no remaining entitlement lose nothing by participating.

How Training Providers Get Paid, and Why That Matters to You

The authorizing statute writes an outcomes-based payment structure directly into the program. The VA pays each provider in three pieces:

  • 25 percent on the student’s first day of attendance.
  • 25 percent when the student completes the program and receives a graduation certificate.
  • 50 percent only after a qualifying outcome: the graduate finds a job in the field and holds it for at least 180 days, the provider hires the graduate for at least 365 days, or the graduate enrolls in further education in the same field.

The VA has stated payments cannot be made outside these milestones.4VA Benefits Administration. VET TEC 2.0 Training Provider FAQs Half of what any provider earns depends on whether graduates land relevant work, which is worth knowing when comparing programs: a provider that stays in the program has to be placing people.
