A charge from “Vernier Company,” “Vernier Shop,” “Vernier,” or the related name “Kelvoshop” on your credit card or bank statement is almost certainly an unauthorized billing from a fraudulent online storefront network, and you should dispute it with your card issuer right away. The charge has no connection to Vernier Science Education, the legitimate Oregon company that sells laboratory and classroom equipment. Vernier Science Education has published a formal advisory identifying four unrelated domains behind these charges: verniershop.com, verniercompany.com, vernierstore.com, and verniergear.com. The real company says plainly that it “cannot help you with this problem” and directs affected consumers to their credit card companies.1Vernier Science Education. What This Charge Actually Is
The billing comes from a cluster of storefronts that advertise heavily discounted consumer goods, ship low-quality or misrepresented products, and then enroll buyers in recurring monthly fees. The Better Business Bureau lists the operation under the name “Vernier Shop” at a Raleigh, North Carolina address that houses virtual-office providers renting mailing addresses for around $99 a month.2Opus Virtual Offices. Raleigh Virtual Office at 5540 Centerview Drive The BBB gives Vernier Shop an F rating. It opened a formal investigation on August 26, 2025 and, as of January 2026, had received no response to two requests for information.3Better Business Bureau. Business Profile for Vernier Shop
No public enforcement action from the FTC or any state attorney general has been announced against Vernier Shop or Kelvoshop as of mid-2026. That means recovery through a card dispute is the practical remedy available to you now.
How the Charge Ended Up on Your Statement
Consumer complaints describe a two-stage pattern. The first stage is a bait-and-switch product sale. Buyers order items like wool coats, leather jackets, cashmere outerwear, or decorative bird feeders at steep discounts and receive cheap substitutes. One buyer paid $25 for a $100 bird feeder and received a replica a quarter of the advertised size. Another ordered a “luxurious Windproof Wool coat” and received a lightweight polyester-cotton sweater. Another paid $79.99 for a “cashmere” coat and got a flimsy garment nothing like the listing. Free returns are advertised but rarely honored; buyers report being told to pay return shipping and restocking fees.4Better Business Bureau. Complaints for Vernier Shop
The second stage is the recurring charge you probably searched for. After the initial purchase, buyers are automatically enrolled in a “Lifetime Warranty” or “Ultimate Protection” plan they never knowingly agreed to. The recurring amounts commonly appear at $34.95 or $39.99 per month, sometimes with a separate initial fee around $9.95. A separate report describes a $19.99 charge that a customer service representative could only describe as a “subscription,” with no specific product attached.5Better Business Bureau. Scam Tracker Report for Kelvoshop
The recurring charges often show up under a different name. Kelvoshop (sometimes appearing as “Kelvo” or “Kelli shop”) processes billing that is linked to the Vernier storefronts. In one BBB Scam Tracker report from November 2025, a consumer charged by Kelvoshop after buying from Vernier Shop reached out to Kelvoshop and received a refund email from “verniersjop.com,” which revealed the connection.6Better Business Bureau. Some consumers report that the charges continued after they canceled their debit card and received a new number, which suggests the operation may be using card-network account-updater services or similar tools to keep billing. At least one consumer reported receiving a collections notice for three times the original purchase price after getting a product refund.4Better Business Bureau. Complaints for Vernier Shop Attempts to contact the company directly have gone poorly; consumers report representatives hanging up or refusing to identify the company they work for.
How To Dispute the Charge
Call your card issuer as soon as you spot the charge and identify it as unauthorized. Under the Fair Credit Billing Act, your liability for unauthorized credit card charges is capped at $50, and most issuers apply a zero-liability policy that waives even that.7FDIC. Are You a Victim of a Payment Card Scam?
To lock in the full legal protections, follow the phone call with a written dispute sent to the card issuer’s billing-inquiry address within 60 days of the statement date that first showed the charge.8Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How Do I Dispute a Charge on My Credit Card Bill? The issuer must acknowledge receipt within 30 days and resolve the dispute within two billing cycles, or 90 days at most. You do not have to pay the disputed amount while the investigation is open, and the issuer cannot report it as delinquent.9Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Regulation Z, Section 1026.13 – Billing Error Resolution
Because the recurring charges have kept going for some consumers even after a card replacement, ask your issuer to block future transactions from Vernier Shop, Vernier Company, Kelvoshop, and similar merchant names. Then watch the next two or three statements closely. If a new charge appears under a new name from the same operation, dispute it the same way.
Debit card charges deserve faster action. Debit disputes fall under the Electronic Fund Transfer Act rather than the FCBA, and the timelines and liability caps are less protective, so report unauthorized debit charges to your bank as soon as you see them.
Where Else To Report It
File a report with the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.10Federal Trade Commission. Report Fraud to the FTC The FTC does not resolve individual complaints, but reports feed a database used by more than 2,000 law enforcement agencies to detect patterns and build cases. You can also file with your state attorney general’s consumer protection division; enough complaints from one state can trigger an investigation.
Keep copies of your order confirmations, statements showing the charges, any emails from Vernier Shop or Kelvoshop, and notes from any phone calls. If the operation ever faces an enforcement action or class settlement, that record is what will let you claim restitution.
