Vanguard Charitable Donor-Advised Fund: Fees, Grants, and Taxes

A Vanguard Charitable donor advised fund lets you make an irrevocable gift to a public charity, take the full tax deduction in the year you give, and then recommend grants to the nonprofits of your choice over any timeline you want. The minimum to open an account is $25,000, and your balance is invested tax-free in Vanguard mutual funds while it waits to be granted out.1Vanguard Charitable. Fees and Minimums That gap between the contribution and the grants is the whole point: it lets you capture a deduction in a high-income year without having to decide the same day which charities get the money.

Opening an Account and Funding It

The initial contribution must be at least $25,000. Additional contributions after that must be at least $5,000 each.2Vanguard Charitable. What Are Your Minimums? Do I Need to Maintain a Specific Balance? Those thresholds apply to cash, publicly traded securities, mutual funds, and ETFs. Transferring shares in-kind requires coordinating with your brokerage.

Vanguard Charitable also accepts complex assets, including non-publicly traded stock, private equity, LLC interests, real estate, and artwork. These require prequalification, and real estate or artwork may need a qualified independent appraisal.3Vanguard Charitable. Complex Assets Expect a longer timeline for these.

Once accepted, your contribution belongs to the charity. You cannot get it back. The irrevocability is what makes the immediate deduction possible, so only contribute money you are certain you want used charitably.

The Tax Deduction

Vanguard Charitable is a public charity under IRC Sections 501(c)(3) and 170(b)(1)(A)(vi), which means contributions qualify for the most generous deduction limits available to individual itemizers.4Vanguard Charitable. Policies and Guidelines The ceilings depend on what you give:

Appreciated stock or mutual fund shares are where a DAF earns its keep. You deduct current market value and you don’t pay capital gains tax on the appreciation you would have owed had you sold the shares yourself. On a position that has tripled, the avoided capital gains alone can exceed the deduction.

If your contribution exceeds the AGI ceiling for the year, the excess carries forward for up to five additional tax years.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 170 – Charitable, Etc., Contributions and Gifts That matters most for large one-time gifts of highly appreciated assets, where the 30% ceiling may not accommodate the whole deduction in one year.

Vanguard Charitable sends a substantiation letter documenting each contribution for your tax return.

Bunching to Clear the Standard Deduction

For 2026, the standard deduction is $16,100 for single filers and $32,200 for married couples filing jointly.6Internal Revenue Service. IRS Releases Tax Inflation Adjustments for Tax Year 2026 If your itemized deductions don’t exceed that number, charitable giving produces no tax benefit at all. Bunching solves that. Instead of donating $8,000 a year for five years and never clearing the standard deduction, you contribute $40,000 to a DAF in one year, itemize well past the threshold, and then recommend $8,000 grants annually from the fund. The charities see the same money on the same cadence; you actually get a deduction that would otherwise disappear.

How the Money Grows

Your contribution gets invested from a menu of more than 40 Vanguard mutual funds covering fixed income, equities, and blended strategies, including ESG-oriented options.7Vanguard Charitable. Investment List Prebuilt Portfolio Builder options at different risk levels are available if you’d rather not assemble an allocation yourself.

Growth inside the account is tax-free. No annual capital gains, no dividend tax, no rebalancing drag. Over a long giving horizon, that compounding meaningfully increases the amount eventually available for grants.

Fees

Vanguard Charitable charges a tiered administrative fee by balance:8Vanguard Charitable. Philanthropic Account Fee Schedule

  • First $500,000: 0.60%
  • Next $500,000: 0.30%
  • Next $4 million: 0.12%
  • Next $10 million: 0.10%
  • Next $15 million: 0.08%

Accounts over $1 million may qualify for Premier status based on balance, activity, and giving patterns, with a reduced fee schedule.8Vanguard Charitable. Philanthropic Account Fee Schedule Underlying fund expense ratios apply on top of the administrative fee, embedded in each fund’s NAV rather than billed separately.

If your balance drops below $25,000, a $250 annual maintenance fee is assessed in February. Accounts open less than six months at the time of assessment are exempt.1Vanguard Charitable. Fees and Minimums

Recommending Grants

When you want to move money out to a charity, you recommend a grant through your account. The minimum grant is $500.9Vanguard Charitable. Recommend a Grant Recipients must be IRS-qualified 501(c)(3) public charities in the United States, and Vanguard Charitable verifies status before releasing funds.10Vanguard Charitable. Nonprofit Organizations

Each grant can be attributed to you by name, partially attributed, or anonymous.9Vanguard Charitable. Recommend a Grant Anonymity is useful when you want to support a cause without triggering follow-up solicitations.

Your account must issue at least one $500 grant every three years. After 30 months of inactivity, Vanguard Charitable will reach out. If the account stays inactive, the balance can be distributed according to your succession plan or to the Philanthropic Impact Fund.4Vanguard Charitable. Policies and Guidelines

Grants you recommend are not deductible. You took the deduction when you funded the account; the tax event already happened.

What You Cannot Use Grants For

Vanguard Charitable will not approve a grant that provides more than an incidental personal benefit to you, your family, or anyone connected to the account. The Pension Protection Act of 2006 added excise taxes for impermissible benefits, so this is enforced.11Vanguard Charitable. Policies and Guidelines DAF grants cannot be used to:

  • Fulfill a personal pledge to a charity.
  • Pay tuition for a specific student.
  • Buy event tickets, gala seats, or memberships where you receive goods or services in return.
  • Fund individuals directly. Grants to natural persons trigger a 20% excise tax on the sponsoring organization and a 5% tax on any fund manager who knowingly approved it.12Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 4966 – Taxes on Taxable Distributions From Donor Advised Funds

Private non-operating foundations are also ineligible recipients. Most family and corporate foundations fall under that designation.11Vanguard Charitable. Policies and Guidelines If an improper use is discovered after the fact, Vanguard Charitable can require the recipient to return the funds and terminate your account privileges.

IRA Qualified Charitable Distributions Cannot Go to a DAF

If you’re 70½ or older and planning to use a Qualified Charitable Distribution from your IRA, you cannot direct it to a donor advised fund. The IRS excludes DAFs as eligible QCD recipients, along with private foundations and supporting organizations. This catches retirees who assume their existing DAF can be the pass-through for IRA distributions.

Succession Planning

The account doesn’t have to end when you do. If you set no plan, remaining assets default to Vanguard Charitable’s Philanthropic Impact Fund, which is almost never what people intend.13Vanguard Charitable. Establish a Succession Plan The options available:

  • Appoint up to two successor advisors who inherit grant-recommending privileges on the existing account. They cannot already be current advisors on the same account.
  • Split the balance into new accounts with their own successor advisors. Each new account needs at least $25,000.
  • Recommend final lump-sum grants to one or more charities, subject to standard review.
  • Set up an endowed grant plan with recurring grants based on a percentage of the balance.
  • Transfer remaining assets to the Philanthropic Impact Fund or the Sustainable Disaster Relief Fund.

You can combine these as long as the allocations total 100%. Minors can be named as successors but don’t get privileges until the age of majority; a legal guardian handles activity in the meantime.13Vanguard Charitable. Establish a Succession Plan

How This Compares to a Private Foundation

Donors with larger ambitions sometimes consider a private foundation instead. On tax efficiency and overhead, the DAF has clear advantages. Private foundations cap cash deductions at 30% of AGI (versus 60% for a DAF) and appreciated-property deductions at 20% of AGI (versus 30%).5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 170 – Charitable, Etc., Contributions and Gifts A foundation also requires legal formation, a board, annual tax filings, and public disclosure of grants, investment expenses, trustee names, and staff compensation. Administrative costs commonly run 2.5% to 4% of assets per year. A Vanguard Charitable DAF can be opened in a day, costs well under 1% in administrative fees, requires no separate tax return from you, and allows anonymous grants.

Where a foundation wins is control. You can hire staff, run programs, make grants to individuals, and operate structured activities like a scholarship with specific selection criteria. For donors whose aim is directing money efficiently to existing public charities, the DAF covers the ground with far less friction.
