The Vanguard bank transfer form, officially Form S616, links a U.S. bank account to your Vanguard investment account so you can move money between the two by electronic transfer.1Vanguard. Electronic Bank Transfer Form Before you print anything, check whether you need the paper form at all. Most investors can add a bank account online by signing in, clicking the person icon, and going to Profile & Account Settings, then Banking. The paper form is the fallback.
When the Paper Form Is Actually Required
The online tool handles the common case: you own both the Vanguard account and the bank account, and the bank is a standard checking or savings account its system can verify. You need Form S616 when the online process can’t verify your bank, when the Vanguard and bank accounts have different owners, or when Vanguard asks for additional documentation. The form instructions tell you to try online first.
One thing the form will not do is remove or modify a bank account that’s already linked. To delete an existing bank link, you send Vanguard a separate letter of instruction.2Vanguard. Vanguard Institutional Bank Transfer Form
How to Fill Out Form S616
Print everything in capital letters using black ink. Forms completed in blue ink, cursive, or faded printing get rejected.1Vanguard. Electronic Bank Transfer Form
Your Vanguard Account
Enter your Vanguard account number, which is either eight or eleven digits depending on account type. If you have more than one Vanguard account, confirm you’re writing the number of the specific account you want the bank linked to. Linking to the wrong sub-account causes problems later.
Your Bank Account
You need three things from your bank: the nine-digit routing number, the full account number, and the account type (checking or savings). On a standard check, the routing number is the leftmost set of digits at the bottom, the account number sits in the middle, and the check number is on the far right. For a savings account without checks, your bank can supply these on a statement or letter.
Print the financial institution’s name legibly. Vanguard cross-checks the name against the routing number, and a mismatch stalls the submission.
Name Matching
The names registered on your Vanguard account and your bank account need to share at least one common owner, and small differences cause real problems. A missing middle initial, or “Robert” on one account and “Bob” on the other, can trigger a rejection or a request for extra paperwork. Trust accounts must show the trust name identically on both sides.
Supporting Documents You Must Attach
Along with the completed form, include one of the following to prove the bank account exists and belongs to you:1Vanguard. Electronic Bank Transfer Form
- A voided check from the account, with “VOID” written across the face. This is the simplest option for a checking account.
- A preprinted deposit slip showing the account number and routing number.
- A recent bank statement showing the complete account number. Statements with the number partially redacted will not be accepted.
- A letter on official bank letterhead listing the full account number, routing number, account registration, and the name of every authorized signer.
Savings-only and online-only banks often don’t issue checks or deposit slips, so a bank letter or full statement is usually the practical choice there.
Signatures and When You Need a Notary
Who signs, and whether a notary has to witness it, depends entirely on whether the Vanguard account and the bank account share a common owner.
If There’s a Common Owner
When at least one person is an owner or authorized signer on both accounts, that person signs the form, and no notarization is required. By signing, you’re also representing that no other bank account owner’s signature is needed to authorize ACH debits. If you aren’t sure whether your bank requires multiple signatures for debits, ask them before submitting.
If There’s No Common Owner
When the Vanguard and bank accounts have entirely different owners, at least one signer from each account must sign, and every signature must be notarized. This comes up most often with family arrangements, such as linking a parent’s checking account to an adult child’s Vanguard brokerage account. A notary at a bank branch or UPS Store can handle this for a small per-signature fee.
Vanguard asks for a notary here, not a Medallion Signature Guarantee. The two are different, and a Medallion stamp is used mainly for transferring securities between firms rather than for linking a bank.3Vanguard. What Is a Medallion Signature Guarantee
Where to Send the Form
You can mail the completed form and supporting documents, or upload scans through your Vanguard account. Both go to the same processing team; upload skips the postal delay.
Regular mail:
Vanguard
P.O. Box 982901
El Paso, TX 79998-2901
Overnight courier (FedEx, UPS, or anything requiring a street address):
Vanguard
5951 Luckett Court, Suite A1
El Paso, TX 79932-1882
If you upload instead, sign in to Vanguard and use the secure message or document upload feature. PDF processes most reliably. Make sure the scan captures every page in full, with nothing cropped or blurred.
What Happens After You Submit
Allow about one week after Vanguard receives the form in good order for the bank account to appear on your Vanguard account. “In good order” matters: if anything is missing, illegible, or inconsistent, the clock doesn’t start until you fix it and resubmit.
Vanguard may verify the link by sending two small test deposits to your bank. You then sign back into Vanguard and confirm the exact amounts to prove you can access the bank account. This usually finishes within a few business days of the link going live.
Once the link is working, keep in mind that money moved into Vanguard by electronic bank transfer or check is subject to a seven-calendar-day hold before it can be used for brokerage transactions.4Vanguard. Settlement fund The money shows in your settlement fund during the hold, but you can’t trade with it yet. New accounts face an additional rule: cash and check deposits are held for 60 days, during which you can invest the money, but any withdrawal has to go back to the same bank account the money came from.5Vanguard. Why Forms Get Rejected
Most rejections trace to the same few mistakes:
- Wrong ink or handwriting. The form requires black ink and capital letters.
- Name mismatch between the Vanguard registration and the bank registration, with no notarization to bridge it.
- Supporting documentation that doesn’t show the full account number, or a bank letter missing one of the required elements (letterhead, routing number, authorized signers).
- Missing signatures. When there’s no common owner, at least one signer from each account must sign; leaving out either side stops the process.
- Partial, cropped, blurred, or redacted uploads.
Walking through that list before you seal the envelope or click upload saves you the week-long round trip of a resubmission.
