Three benefit programs, three calendars. In 2026, Supplemental Security Income deposits on the 1st of each month, VA disability compensation deposits on the 1st, and Social Security Disability Insurance deposits on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday depending on the beneficiary’s birthday. When any of those dates falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the payment moves to the business day before. That single adjustment rule is what makes the VA, SSI, and SSDI payment schedule occasionally produce two deposits in one month and none at the start of the next.
SSI Dates in 2026
SSI pays on the first day of every month.1Social Security Administration. 20 CFR 416.502 – Manner of Payment When the 1st lands on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday, the deposit shifts to the preceding business day. That happens three times in 2026, and each time it pulls next month’s payment into the current month.2Social Security Administration. Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments 2026
- January: payment on the 1st, plus the February payment on January 30 (February 1 is a Sunday).
- October: payment on the 1st, plus the November payment on October 30 (November 1 is a Sunday).
- December: payment on the 1st, plus the January 2027 payment on December 31 (January 1 is a federal holiday).
The second deposit is not extra money. It is next month’s payment arriving early, so the following month opens with no SSI check. Recipients who treat both deposits as spendable in the same month can end up several weeks without SSI income. Marking those three months now is the simplest way to avoid it.
SSDI Wednesdays in 2026
SSDI uses a birthday-based schedule spread across three Wednesdays each month.3Social Security Administration. 20 CFR 404.1807 – Monthly Payment Day
- Born the 1st through the 10th: second Wednesday.
- Born the 11th through the 20th: third Wednesday.
- Born the 21st through the 31st: fourth Wednesday.
If you receive benefits on someone else’s work record, as a spouse or child, the worker’s birthday sets the payment day, not yours.

VA Disability Dates
VA disability compensation and pension payments deposit on the first day of each month. When the 1st falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the VA delivers on the preceding business day, the same rule SSI follows.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 38 US Code 5120 – Payment of Benefits; Delivery
One detail catches new recipients: your first VA payment does not arrive until the first day of the month after your award’s effective date. If your rating is effective October 1, the first deposit comes in November.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 38 US Code 5111 – Commencement of Period of Payment After that, payments arrive on the 1st every month.
The Weekend and Holiday Rule
All three programs use the same adjustment: a scheduled payment on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday moves to the closest preceding business day.1Social Security Administration. 20 CFR 416.502 – Manner of Payment4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 38 US Code 5120 – Payment of Benefits; Delivery A Sunday payment lands on Friday. A Monday-holiday payment also lands on Friday. The shift is always backward, never forward. Some banks post federal deposits a day early, so funds may appear even sooner in your account.
If You Receive Both SSI and SSDI
Concurrent recipients follow a different SSDI schedule. Your SSI still deposits on the 1st, but your SSDI portion pays on the 3rd of every month rather than a birthday-based Wednesday.6Social Security Administration. Cyclical Payment of Social Security Benefits That produces two deposits in the first few days of each month. The 3rd-of-the-month schedule also applies to people who filed for Social Security before June 1997 and to beneficiaries living outside the United States. If the 3rd falls on a weekend or holiday, the standard preceding-business-day rule applies.
2026 Payment Amounts
All three programs applied a 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment for 2026.7Social Security Administration. Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Information The VA rates took effect December 1, 2025.

SSDI
SSDI is based on your lifetime earnings record, so there is no standard amount. The average monthly SSDI payment in early 2026 is about $1,634.9Social Security Administration. Disabled-Worker Statistics Individual amounts vary considerably.
VA Disability Compensation

How Payments Are Delivered
Federal law now requires nearly all benefit payments to be electronic.11Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 31 US Code 3332 – Required Direct Deposit As of September 30, 2025, the Treasury stopped issuing paper checks for almost all federal disbursements, including benefit payments.12Treasury Financial Experience. Implementation of Executive Orders on America’s Bank Account You need either a bank account for direct deposit or a Direct Express card.
Direct Express is a prepaid debit Mastercard for beneficiaries without a bank account. There is no enrollment fee, no monthly fee, and no minimum balance. Each deposit includes one free ATM withdrawal.13Bureau of the Fiscal Service. Direct Express To sign up, call the Treasury’s Electronic Payment Solution Center at 1-800-333-1795, or contact the SSA at 1-800-772-1213.14Social Security Administration. If a Payment Is Missing
Check with your bank first. Electronic deposits sometimes post a few hours late, and the bank can tell you whether a transfer is pending. If there is no record of the deposit, call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) to report a missing SSI or SSDI payment.16Social Security Administration. How Do I Report a Missing Payment?
For a missing VA payment, wait 15 days after your decision notice showing at least a 10% rating, then call the Veterans help line at 1-800-827-1000, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. ET.17Veterans Affairs. What To Expect After You Get a Disability Rating For ongoing issues, your nearest VA regional office can also help.
One common reason a payment shows up smaller than expected is overpayment recovery. If the SSA determines it previously paid you more than you were owed, it can withhold from future benefits to collect. The default withholding is 100% of a monthly Social Security payment and 10% of an SSI payment, though you can request a lower rate or file a waiver if full recovery would cause hardship. The SSA must notify you in writing before withholding begins.18Social Security Administration. Resolve an Overpayment
