GI Bill enrollment verification is the monthly check the Department of Veterans Affairs uses to confirm you’re still attending your approved program before it releases your Monthly Housing Allowance or kicker payments. The window opens on the last day of each calendar month, and you confirm two things: your credit or clock hours and your enrollment start and end dates for that month.1U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Whether You Have to Verify
The requirement depends on which benefit you use and how you’re enrolled.
- Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33): required if you receive the Monthly Housing Allowance or a kicker, are attending a college, university, or non-college degree program such as HVAC repair or truck driving, and are enrolled at least half-time.2U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. When to Verify and When You Get Paid
The verification window opens on the last day of each calendar month during your enrollment. If your program starts on August 5, your first verification is due on or after August 31, and you still verify for a month even if you were only enrolled for part of it.2U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Payment timing works differently by program. Post-9/11 GI Bill payments are processed on the first day of the following month and can take up to five days to arrive. Montgomery GI Bill payments aren’t processed until after you verify, then take up to five days from that point. Verify late on the MGIB and you get paid late.2U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. What You Confirm Each Month
The VA asks you to confirm your credit hours or clock hours and the start and end dates of your enrollment for that month.1U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Verify Your School Enrollment Have your current course schedule handy. If either detail is wrong because you dropped a class, changed programs, or had another adjustment, do not verify the inaccurate information. Report the change first, then verify.
Before your first verification, make sure the VA has your current mobile phone number and email on file. Missing the monthly prompt is one of the most common reasons students fall behind.

When Something Has Changed
Monthly verification only confirms that nothing has changed. When something does, report it separately before you verify. Dropping a class, adding credits, withdrawing, or changing your major all count. The person to contact is your school’s School Certifying Official, who handles VA certification paperwork on campus. Once notified, the school is required to report the change to the VA within 30 days. The SCO updates the certification, and the VA adjusts your future prompts and payments.
Verifying enrollment data you know is wrong can create an overpayment you’ll have to repay. If your text or online prompt shows the wrong number of credit hours, don’t confirm it. Contact your SCO, get the record corrected, then verify.
What Happens If You Skip a Month
Missing one month won’t immediately cut off your payments. After two consecutive months without verifying, the VA pauses your Monthly Housing Allowance and any kicker payments until you complete the outstanding verifications.2U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The hold comes off when you complete a positive verification for the missed months, or when the term ends with no future awards scheduled.9U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Enrollment Verification – Chapter 33 Once you verify, the VA processes the withheld payments, and normal processing takes up to five days. If you’ve been locked out for multiple months and the online system doesn’t show your missed periods correctly, call the Education Call Center at 1-888-442-4551.
If You Get an Overpayment Notice
If you receive housing allowance for a period when you weren’t actually enrolled or had dropped below half-time, the VA creates a debt on your account. The Debt Management Center sends a collection letter giving you 30 days to pay or dispute. Respond within that window. You can request a waiver if the overpayment wasn’t your fault, or set up a repayment plan if it was.10U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Information About GI Bill Overpayments and Debts
