A VA benefit letter downloaded from VA.gov works as official proof of military service in most situations where you’d otherwise hand over a DD-214. The Department of Veterans Affairs issues several letter types that confirm your branch, service dates, discharge characterization, and, if you want, your disability rating and monthly compensation. You can generate one in minutes online or through the VA’s mobile app, and federal agencies, state offices, schools, and many private businesses accept it. There are limits, and it helps to know which letter to pull for which purpose before you start.
Which VA Letter Proves What
The VA offers four letters through its online portal, and choosing the right one saves you from oversharing.
- The Benefit Summary and Service Verification Letter is the one most veterans reach for. It confirms your branch, service dates, and discharge, and it can display your current disability rating and compensation amount. Some agencies call it a “VA award letter.”
- The Proof of Service Letter is a leaner document that confirms honorable service without disclosing health or financial details. Good for military discounts and DMV designations.
- The Civil Service Preference Letter confirms whether you qualify for 5-point or 10-point veterans’ preference in federal hiring.
- The Commissary Letter verifies eligibility for on-base commissary and exchange shopping.
If a requesting party just needs to see that you served honorably, the Proof of Service Letter is the right choice. If they need to see your rating (a property tax assessor, for instance), pull the Benefit Summary Letter and toggle the rating on.
How to Download a VA Letter
You’ll sign in to VA.gov with a verified Login.gov or ID.me account. The older sign-in options are gone: My HealtheVet credentials stopped working on March 5, 2025, and DS Logon was retired on November 18, 2025.1U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Prepare for VA’s Secure Sign-In Changes If you were using one of those, you’ll need to set up Login.gov or ID.me before you can pull any letters.

Choosing What Appears on the Letter
Before the Benefit Summary Letter generates, the system asks you to toggle what to include: service dates, monthly compensation, and whether your permanent and total disability status appears.3U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Download VA Benefit Letters Tailor the letter to who’s asking. A tax assessor needs your rating; a retailer offering a military discount does not need to know what the VA pays you each month.
The system will also ask you to confirm your mailing address, because it prints on the document. If the address is out of date the letter is still valid, but it can raise questions with whoever is reviewing it, so it’s worth keeping your VA profile current.3U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Where VA Letters Are Accepted as Proof
Federal Hiring
The Veterans’ Preference Act of 1944 adds 5 or 10 points to the competitive examination scores of eligible veterans applying for federal jobs. The Civil Service Preference Letter documents which tier applies to you, and hiring officials use it during selection.3U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Download VA Benefit Letters Honorable discharge generally gets you the 5-point preference; service-connected disability, Purple Heart, and certain other categories qualify for 10.
Social Security Disability Claims
Veterans rated 100% Permanent and Total by the VA get expedited processing of Social Security disability claims. To trigger it, identify yourself as “Veteran 100% P&T” when applying and provide your VA notification letter showing the rating.5Social Security Administration. Expedited Processing of Veteran’s 100% Disability Claims If you apply online, put “Veteran 100% P&T” in the Remarks section. The Benefit Summary Letter with the P&T flag turned on is the document SSA is looking for.
Commissary and Exchange Shopping
Veterans with a service-connected disability who were honorably discharged can shop at military commissaries and exchanges by presenting either a Veteran Health Identification Card or a VA-issued service-connected disability letter, along with a government photo ID.6U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Commissary and Exchange Privileges for Veterans The Commissary Letter from VA.gov fills that role. Retirees, former prisoners of war, and Medal of Honor recipients also qualify.
Property Tax Exemptions
Most states offer some form of property tax break for veterans with service-connected disabilities. The rules vary: some states waive the entire bill for veterans rated at 100%, others apply partial exemptions based on rating percentage or assessed value. Local tax assessors typically want to see the Benefit Summary Letter with your rating shown. Because the programs differ by jurisdiction, call your assessor’s office before you generate the letter to confirm what they need.
In-State Tuition
Under Section 702 of the Veterans Choice Act, veterans using Post-9/11 GI Bill, Montgomery GI Bill Active Duty, or Veteran Readiness and Employment benefits may qualify for in-state tuition at public colleges no matter how long they’ve lived in the state. You must have served at least 90 days on active duty after September 10, 2001, and be living in the state where the school is located when you enroll.7U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. In-State Tuition Rates Under the Veterans Choice Act The school’s certifying official handles the classification and can use your VA documents to confirm eligibility. If you’re billed at out-of-state rates by mistake, contact the certifying official or call the GI Bill hotline at 888-442-4551.
DMV Designations and Retail Discounts
Many state DMV offices accept VA letters to add a veteran designation to a driver’s license or state ID. Private businesses accept them for military discounts. The Proof of Service Letter is usually the better fit here because it confirms veteran status without exposing your rating or compensation.
When a VA Letter Isn’t Enough
A VA benefit letter covers most requests for proof of service, but it doesn’t replace the DD Form 214 in every case. The DD-214 is still the primary document for detailed service history, including duty stations, medals, and the full characterization narrative. Some state agencies, certain VA benefit applications, and some private employers require the DD-214 specifically because they need information the letter doesn’t contain. If you can’t find yours, you can request a replacement through the National Personnel Records Center via VA.gov.8U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Get Your Military Service Records
A working rule: if the request is for “proof of military service” or “proof of veteran status,” the letter works. If it asks specifically for a DD-214 or for detailed service history, the letter won’t. When you’re not sure, ask the requesting agency what they’ll accept before you download anything.
Fixing Errors Before You Share the Letter
VA letters pull from your VA profile in real time, so anything wrong in the profile shows up on the letter. The VA doesn’t set a formal expiration date on downloaded letters, but some agencies want a recently generated copy, so it’s worth pulling a fresh one before you send it anywhere.
For simple corrections like an address or name, note that updating the Department of Defense’s DEERS system does not automatically update your VA records. Protecting the Information on Your Letter
These letters carry sensitive data: disability rating, compensation, service history, and identifiers. Share them only with parties that need them, and use the toggles to limit what appears on each letter.
