Beyond the raw measurements, the Postal Service also cares about legibility, contrast, and how the indicia sits relative to the delivery address.

The basic format wraps the required text inside a ruled box. The box can be omitted, but every required text element must still be present and legible. Production Methods That Qualify
Indicia can be created by printing press, hand stamp, lithography, or similar device. They cannot be typewritten or hand-drawn.2United States Postal Service. The Content That Has to Fit Inside
How tall the indicia grows depends on how many lines it carries. Every standard permit imprint must include four lines in a fixed order:
- Mail class, such as “First-Class Mail” or “Priority Mail”
- “U.S. Postage Paid”
- City and state where the permit is held

A few optional elements can appear as well. First-Class Mail and Priority Mail indicia may include the mailing date, the amount of postage paid, or the weight in ounces. The permit holder’s ZIP Code can appear directly after the state name or as a separate line reading “ZIP Code” followed by the five-digit number. Mailers can also substitute “Mailed From ZIP Code” with the ZIP Code of the mailing office instead of printing the city and state.2United States Postal Service. USPS Marketing Mail indicia follow the same content rules but must omit any mail class marking like “First-Class” and cannot include the mailing date.
Every added line pushes the printed area taller. That is fine as long as the indicia still fits within the half-inch minimum floor and does not encroach on reserved barcode space or crowd the delivery address.
Where the Indicia Can Go on the Mailpiece
The indicia must be aligned parallel with the delivery address and can occupy one of four positions:
- The upper-right corner of the mailpiece
- The upper-right corner of the address area
- To the right of the address on an address label

The upper-right corner of the mailpiece is the most common choice for standard envelopes. The label and window options exist for mailers who print addresses on inserts or use peel-and-stick labels.
The indicia cannot overlap reserved spaces such as delivery-point barcodes or ACS participant codes. For USPS Marketing Mail pieces that reference expedited handling (words like “Priority” or “Express” in the design), a clear space of at least three-eighths of an inch must surround the entire indicia.1United States Postal Service. Every piece in a bulk mailing must carry the indicia in the same position. Mixed placement within a single batch creates sorting errors that can delay or reject the whole shipment.
Picture Permit Imprint Dimensions
The Picture Permit Imprint program lets mailers replace the plain text box with a branded image alongside the required postal text. The size template is considerably larger than a standard indicia.
The full imprint, image plus text, must measure between 1.625 and 2 inches tall and between 1.31 and 1.5 inches wide. Formatting rules are stricter too. All printed text must use a sans-serif font (preferred) at no smaller than 8-point type, and the mail class line must appear in all capital letters.4United States Postal Service. What Gets an Indicia Rejected
An indicia that meets the size floor can still fail acceptance for reasons tied to how it prints and where it sits. Common problems:
- Weak contrast against the envelope or label stock
- A typewritten or hand-drawn appearance
- Missing one of the four required text lines
- Overlap with barcode zones or ACS codes
- Inconsistent placement piece to piece within a single batch
- Less than three-eighths of an inch of clear space around a Marketing Mail indicia that references expedited handling
Presorted mail carrying a permit imprint must be presented for acceptance and verification at the office where the permit is held, and it cannot be dropped in street collection boxes.6United States Postal Service.
