When a hurricane hits, USPS hurricane service disruptions typically mean suspended delivery, closed post offices, and mail held securely at a central facility until it’s safe to resume. Your mail is not lost. It waits in USPS custody, and you have several tools to reroute it, pick it up, or replace what was damaged in transit.
Check Whether Your Post Office and Route Are Suspended
Start at the USPS Service Alerts page at about.usps.com/newsroom/service-alerts, which is updated frequently during disaster recovery and lists facility closures, reduced-hours operations, and restored routes.1United States Postal Service. Service Alerts2United States Postal Service. Mail Service Alerts and Updates The USPS Post Office Locator also shows status indicators for individual branches. If the sites are down or you’d rather talk to someone, call 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777) and ask about your ZIP code.
Suspensions cover more than just carrier routes. Retail counters, PO Box access, and mail processing plants in the storm’s path all shift to modified operations or close outright. District managers have authority under postal regulations to shut down any facility in their jurisdiction when a natural disaster, facility damage, or threats to mail security make normal operations unsafe.3Office of Inspector General. U.S. Postal Service Emergency Suspension Process Service doesn’t resume until inspectors confirm the buildings are safe and delivery roads are passable, which can take a day or several weeks depending on damage.
Where Your Mail Goes During a Suspension
When delivery is paused, USPS holds all undeliverable mail and packages at a central hub or an alternate facility outside the affected area. Nothing is left at a doorstep or in a mailbox that may be flooded. Your mail sits secured until your local office reopens or an alternate pickup site is announced.
To collect accumulated mail once you can, bring a valid photo ID to the holding facility or your reopened post office.4United States Postal Service. Picking Up Mail That Is Being Held at Your Post Office If a carrier left a PS Form 3849 notice before the suspension, bring that too. Proof of residence isn’t a standard requirement, though a facility handling large numbers of displaced customers may ask for extra verification. Unclaimed mail stays secured until the original delivery office is back to full operations.
Forward Your Mail if You’ve Been Displaced
If the storm pushed you out of your home, a Temporary Change of Address (TCA) sends your mail to wherever you’re staying, for as little as 15 days or as long as one year.5United States Postal Service. Standard Forward Mail and Change of Address A TCA assumes you’ll return, so when the forwarding period ends, mail routes back to your original address automatically.
You can file online at usps.com or in person at any operating post office. Either way, you’re completing PS Form 3575 and marking it “Temporary.”6United States Postal Service. What Does PS Form 3575 Mail Forwarding Change of Address Order Look Like Filing online requires identity verification: USPS charges a $1.25 authentication fee to a credit or debit card (no prepaid or gift cards), and the billing address must match either your old or new address. You may also need to enter a one-time passcode sent to your mobile phone.7United States Postal Service. Change of Address – The Basics Filing at a counter requires a photo ID instead.
Standard forwarding only covers First-Class Mail and packages. To catch magazines, catalogs, and other non-first-class items, Premium Forwarding Service Residential bundles everything into a weekly Priority Mail package sent to your temporary address. Enrollment is $26.40 online or $28.70 at the counter, with a weekly fee of $29.70 either way.8United States Postal Service. Premium Forwarding Services The cost adds up, but for a household waiting months on repairs, it can be worth it.
Mobile Retail Units When a Post Office Stays Closed
If a facility is too damaged to reopen quickly, USPS deploys Mobile Retail Units (MRUs) to fill the gap. These are portable post offices, usually set up in the closed branch’s parking lot or another accessible spot nearby. At an MRU you can buy stamps, ship packages, submit change-of-address and hold-mail forms, and pick up PO Box mail with proper identification.9United States Postal Service. Postal Service to Open Mobile Retail Units to Serve Customers in the Lake Charles Area
During the 2024 Florida hurricanes, USPS ran MRUs in places like Cedar Key and Suwannee where brick-and-mortar branches stayed inaccessible, covering both retail transactions and package delivery for those ZIP codes.10United States Postal Service. USPS Statement on Florida 1 Operations and Hurricane Recovery MRU locations post to the Service Alerts page and go out through local media. Check daily if your office is closed and no unit has appeared yet, since deployments are staged as roads open.
File a Claim for Damaged or Lost Packages
If a package was sitting in a flooded facility or on a truck during the storm, you may be able to file an insurance claim, but only if it shipped with a service that includes indemnity coverage. Eligible services include Priority Mail Express, Registered Mail with postal insurance, insured mail, and Collect on Delivery. USPS cannot legally pay compensation for standard uninsured mail.11United States Postal Service. 609 Filing Indemnity Claims for Loss or Damage
For damaged items, file immediately, and no later than 60 days from the mailing date. For items lost entirely, most domestic services require waiting at least 15 days from mailing before filing, with the same 60-day outer deadline.11United States Postal Service. 609 Filing Indemnity Claims for Loss or Damage You’ll need the tracking or label number, evidence that the item was insured, proof of value (a receipt, invoice, or credit card statement), and photos showing the damage.12United States Postal Service. File a USPS Claim – Domestic Either sender or recipient can file. One critical point after a disaster: don’t throw away damaged items or their packaging, even after photographing them. USPS may require you to bring everything to a post office for inspection before settling.
PO Box Renewals Caught in the Closure
If your PO Box renewal came due while the office was closed, the standard grace period is 10 days past the due date. After that, USPS applies a late charge equal to the lock replacement fee, and the box can be closed for nonpayment.13United States Postal Service. DMM 508 Recipient Services During COVID-19 the grace period was extended to 30 days with reopening fees waived, but that was a one-time pandemic measure, not a standing disaster policy.
If your branch was physically closed during the renewal window, contact USPS customer service or visit the nearest operating post office as soon as you can to make the payment. Customers with recurring credit card billing through PO Boxes Online generally don’t need to act unless a charge fails. USPS has shown flexibility on enforcement when closures kept customers away from their boxes in past disasters, but no automatic waiver is written into the regulations.
Steps to Take Before the Storm
If you have advance warning, a few pre-landfall steps can save real hassle after.
Request a Hold Mail
USPS Hold Mail pauses delivery and stores mail at your local office for a minimum of 3 days and a maximum of 30 days.14United States Postal Service. Hold Mail – Pause Mail Delivery Online You can request the hold up to 30 days ahead or as late as 3 AM Eastern on the start date. This keeps mail out of a box that may end up flooded or ripped off its post. If the hold expires while the office is still closed, your mail stays secured until operations resume.
Sign Up for Informed Delivery
Informed Delivery is a free USPS service that sends digital previews of incoming letter-sized mail and tracking notifications for packages.15United States Postal Service. Informed Delivery – The Basics During a suspension, it shows you what should be arriving, which helps you spot time-sensitive items like bills or legal notices you may need to handle another way. Set it up before hurricane season.
Move Payments and Benefits Off Paper
Federal benefit checks that still arrive by mail, including Social Security, are especially exposed to delivery disruptions. The Social Security Administration has long encouraged direct deposit as a safeguard, since electronic payments land regardless of whether mail is moving. Setting up online billing and autopay for regular expenses does the same job in reverse, keeping late fees from stacking up during a closure.
