USCIS Receipt Number Invalid? Causes, Fixes, and Escalation

If your USCIS receipt number is coming back as invalid when you check it online, the cause is almost always one of three things: a typo when you entered it, a recent filing that hasn’t been loaded into the case status system yet, or an application that was rejected and never received a real receipt number at all. The fix depends on which one you’re dealing with, and the steps below sort that out and walk through what to do next.

Why the Number Is Showing as Invalid

A USCIS receipt number is 13 characters: three letters followed by ten digits. Common prefixes are EAC, WAC, LIN, SRC, NBC, and MSC, and online filings use IOE.1U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Receipt Number When the Case Status Online tool rejects a number, one of four problems is usually behind it.

A Typographical Error

This is the most common cause. A zero read as the letter O, two digits swapped, a missing character, or a copy taken from the wrong line of your I-797C notice will all produce an invalid result. It’s also possible that USCIS itself printed the number incorrectly on your notice, in which case you can submit a typographic error service request through the agency’s e-Request tool.2USCIS. e-Request Self Service Tools

The Case Isn’t in the System Yet

If you filed recently and the number came from an email or text notification (from Form G-1145), the case may not be searchable online for several days or even weeks. Lockbox facilities process a high volume of filings, and there is a lag between accepting a package and making the case visible in the status tool. The working rule: if more than 30 business days have passed since USCIS cashed your filing fee or since a lockbox received your package, and your number still doesn’t work, email lockboxsupport@uscis.dhs.gov for a review of your submission.3U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. The Filing Was Rejected

A rejected package never enters the system, so no valid receipt number exists. Rejections happen for a few predictable reasons: an outdated form edition, a wrong fee amount, a missing signature, or an incomplete filing.4U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Chapter 6 – Submitting Requests Form editions matter more than people expect. USCIS updates forms regularly, and once a new edition takes effect, the prior version is rejected on arrival. The I-129 petition, for example, updated in February 2026, and starting April 1, 2026, USCIS rejects filings on the prior edition.5U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Forms Updates

A Payment That Didn’t Go Through

If you paid by credit card using Form G-1450 and the charge was declined, USCIS rejects the entire package without trying the card again.6USCIS. Form G-1450, Instructions for Authorization for Credit Card Transactions A bounced check gets one more attempt; if it fails again, the filing may be rejected or denied. If USCIS already approved a case based on a payment that later comes back unpayable, the agency can issue a Notice of Intent to Revoke that approval.7USCIS. Filing Fees Bank statements, cleared checks, and credit card confirmations are the fastest way to sort out a payment-related dispute, so keep them.

How to Fix It

Work through these in order. Each step escalates if the one before doesn’t resolve things.

Verify the Number Against Your I-797C

Pull the original Notice of Action and compare character by character against what you typed. Look for zero-vs-O confusion, transposed digits, and missing characters. If you first got the number by text or email, try the version on the paper notice instead. Confirm you have exactly three letters followed by ten digits.1U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Submit an e-Request

If the number matches your notice but still returns invalid, use the USCIS e-Request system at egov.uscis.gov/e-request. It handles cases taking longer than expected, notices never received by mail, cards never received, and typographic errors that need correction.2USCIS. e-Request Self Service Tools For a receipt notice you never received, choose “Did Not Receive Notice by Mail.”

Call the USCIS Contact Center

If e-Request doesn’t solve it, call 800-375-5283 (TTY 800-767-1833), Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern. Before you call, have any receipt notice, a copy of the filed application, and payment confirmations on hand.8U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Contact Center The automated system will try to answer first and route you to online tools; if those don’t help, ask to be connected to a live agent.

Request Expedited Processing If USCIS Caused the Problem

If the invalid number resulted from a clear USCIS error and you can show urgency, you can ask USCIS to expedite the case. The Policy Manual lists “clear USCIS error” as a recognized ground for expedited processing, but you must document the error and demonstrate the need. Severe financial loss is a separate expedite ground, though it won’t apply if the delay was caused by your own late filing or incorrect information.9U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Chapter 5 – Expedite Requests

If Your Application Was Rejected

When USCIS rejects a package, it sends the paperwork back with a notice explaining why. You can re-file a corrected version, but two things matter. A rejection cannot be appealed. And the corrected filing is treated as a brand-new submission with a new filing date and new fees. USCIS does not carry the original filing date forward from a rejected package.4U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Chapter 6 – Submitting Requests The lost date can matter a lot if you were counting on the original filing to hold your status or hit a deadline. Fix the identified problem, confirm the current fee and current form edition on the USCIS website, and re-file quickly.

What’s at Risk While It’s Unresolved

An invalid receipt number can carry real consequences depending on what you filed.

A Gap in Lawful Status

If you filed something status-dependent, like an I-485 adjustment of status, and you can’t confirm USCIS received it before your current visa expired, you may have a gap in lawful status. Someone who falls out of nonimmigrant status can be placed in removal proceedings under 8 U.S.C. ยง 1227(a)(1)(C), which covers people who failed to maintain the status they were admitted under.10Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 8 USC 1227 – Deportable Aliens The receipt notice is often the only proof that the filing was timely.

A Break in Work Authorization

This is where most people feel the problem first. If you filed an I-765 to renew your Employment Authorization Document, the I-797C receipt notice is what you present to your employer, together with your expiring EAD, to show the automatic extension of work authorization of up to 540 days while the renewal is pending.11U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Automatic Employment Authorization Document (EAD) Extension Without a valid receipt notice, you can’t demonstrate that extension for I-9 purposes, and an expired EAD alone doesn’t qualify. That can cost you your job even though USCIS technically has the renewal pending.

A Missed Request for Evidence

USCIS sends Requests for Evidence to the address on file, and the response deadline is strict: a maximum of 84 days, no extensions. If you can’t track your case because your number isn’t working, you may not learn about an RFE until it’s too late. Missing the deadline lets USCIS deny the application as abandoned, deny it on the existing record, or both.12U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Chapter 6 – Evidence

When USCIS Channels Don’t Fix It

Two escalation paths exist when the normal contact routes have run out.

The CIS Ombudsman

The Office of the Citizenship and Immigration Services Ombudsman, within the Department of Homeland Security, handles complaints about USCIS processing problems, including undelivered receipt notices. Before requesting help, you must have contacted USCIS within the last 90 days and given the agency at least 60 days to try to resolve the issue.13U.S. Department of Homeland Security. How to Submit a Case Assistance Request For receipt notice problems specifically, the Ombudsman recommends first emailing lockboxsupport@uscis.dhs.gov if more than 30 business days have passed since the lockbox received your package or cashed your check.3U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. A Congressional Inquiry

Your U.S. representative or senator’s office can submit a congressional inquiry to USCIS on your behalf, which is particularly useful when the situation is urgent. Phone inquiries from congressional offices typically get a response by the next business day, and email inquiries are generally acknowledged within five business days and resolved within 30 calendar days.14U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Congressional Inquiries Refresher for Legislative Staff These inquiries cover the full range of USCIS matters, including employment authorization, adjustment of status, and naturalization. Call your representative’s local office and ask for the staff member who handles immigration casework.
