USCIS Receipt Notice (Form I-797C): Types, Uses, and Extensions

Form I-797C, Notice of Action, is the letter USCIS mails to tell you something has happened with an application or petition you filed. Most often it confirms the agency received your filing, but the same form is also used to reject a filing, transfer a case between offices, schedule biometrics, or schedule an interview. The 13-character receipt number printed near the top is the piece that matters most: it’s how you track your case, how you prove to employers and state agencies that a case is pending, and, for a few filing types, how you show that an expired green card or work permit has been extended while USCIS decides.1U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Form I-797C, Notice of Action

One quick distinction, because the I-797 family causes constant confusion. Form I-797C handles administrative communications and grants no benefit by itself. Form I-797A is an approval notice that includes a replacement I-94. Form I-797B is an approval notice for employer-sponsored worker petitions. Form I-797E is a request for more evidence. When people say “my receipt notice,” they almost always mean the I-797C.2U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Form I-797 Types and Functions

What the Notice Actually Tells You

The receipt number is three letters followed by ten digits. That code follows your file through every step of adjudication, and you will need it for essentially every future interaction with USCIS.3U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Case Status Online

The receipt date marks when USCIS officially accepted your filing and processed the fees. The notice also identifies the form you filed (an I-130 for a family petition, an I-485 for adjustment of status, and so on), your name, and the address USCIS has on file. At the bottom is the service center or field office handling the case, which is where later inquiries or supplemental evidence get directed.

Employment-based immigrant petitions may also show a priority date. That date sets your place in line within your visa category, and it is generally the date the Department of Labor accepted the labor certification application, or the date USCIS received the petition if no labor certification was required.4eCFR. 8 CFR 204.5 – Petitions for Employment-Based Immigrants

The single field that tells you why the notice was sent is “Notice Type.” Read it first.

The Five Notice Types You Might Receive

  • Receipt Notice. USCIS accepted the filing after confirming the forms were complete and the fees processed.
  • Rejection Notice. The filing was sent back because something was wrong at intake: a missing signature, incorrect fee amount, or missing required form. The notice explains the specific problem and how to resubmit.
  • Transfer Notice. Your case moved from one service center to another, usually for workload balancing or to route it to a center that handles your form type. You’ll get either a new receipt number or confirmation that the existing one carries over.
  • Biometrics Appointment Notice. The date, time, and location for fingerprints and a photograph. Mandatory for most applications.
  • Interview Notice. The date, time, and address for an in-person interview at a local field office.

A rejection is not a denial. Rejection means USCIS never formally accepted the filing, so no filing date is locked in and you can resubmit after fixing the problem. Denial comes only after USCIS has reviewed the merits of a case that was properly accepted.5eCFR. 8 CFR 103.2 – Submission and Adjudication of Benefit Requests

Using the Notice as Proof of a Pending Case

State and local agencies sometimes accept the I-797C as supporting evidence when you apply for a driver’s license, Social Security number, or another benefit they administer. USCIS itself reminds those agencies that the notice only proves you submitted an application. It does not mean USCIS has decided you are eligible for any immigration benefit.1U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Form I-797C, Notice of Action

For Form I-9 employment verification, the I-797C plays a narrower role. If you applied to replace a lost, stolen, or damaged employment document, the receipt notice works as a temporary stand-in for up to 90 days from the date of hire. Before that window closes, you have to give your employer the actual replacement document, or a different acceptable document from the same I-9 list.6U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. When the Notice Extends Your Green Card or Work Permit

In a few filing categories, the I-797C does more than confirm receipt. It actually extends the validity of an immigration document you already hold. This is the notice’s most consequential function, and getting it wrong can leave you without work authorization or proof of residency.

Conditional Green Cards: Forms I-751 and I-829

If you file Form I-751 to remove conditions on a marriage-based green card, or Form I-829 to remove conditions as an immigrant investor, USCIS extends your permanent resident card for 48 months past its printed expiration date. The I-797C receipt notice is your proof of that extension. For employment verification, you present the expired green card together with the I-797C showing the timely filing.7U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Form I-751 and I-829 48 Month Extension

Employment Authorization Documents: Form I-765

The rules for EAD automatic extensions changed in late 2025, and which rule applies depends on when you filed your renewal.

Renewal applications filed before October 30, 2025 could receive an automatic extension of employment authorization for up to 540 days while the renewal was pending. To qualify, the eligibility category code on the front of the existing EAD had to match the category code on the I-797C receipt notice.8U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Handbook for Employers M-274 – 5.1 Automatic Extensions Based on a Timely Filed Application to Renew Employment Authorization Extensions already in effect under this rule remain valid.

Renewal applications filed on or after October 30, 2025 do not get an automatic extension. DHS eliminated the 540-day extension for new filings, so your EAD validity is not extended by a pending renewal unless a separate legal provision covers your specific category, such as Temporary Protected Status.9U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. If Your Notice Schedules an Appointment You Can’t Make

Treat every appointment on an I-797C as non-negotiable. If you skip a biometrics appointment or interview, USCIS will treat your case as abandoned and deny it, unless the agency receives a change of address notice or a rescheduling request by the appointment date.5eCFR. 8 CFR 103.2 – Submission and Adjudication of Benefit Requests A notice mailed to an outdated address that you never see can still lead to denial.

If you know in advance you can’t attend, contact the USCIS Contact Center before the scheduled date to request a reschedule. You need a legitimate reason such as a medical emergency or travel conflict.10U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Policy Manual Volume 1, Part C, Chapter 2 – Biometrics Collection A late rescheduling request is possible after a missed appointment, and USCIS has discretion to excuse the miss based on how much time has passed, whether you had a good reason, and whether denial would cause undue hardship. That discretion is not something to rely on.

Tracking Your Case With the Receipt Number

The receipt number unlocks the USCIS Case Status Online tool, which shows the last action taken and any next steps required from you.11U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Checking Your Case Status Online Posted processing times for your form type and filing location are available at egov.uscis.gov/processing-times, and a case pending longer than the posted range may justify a formal inquiry.

If you filed on paper, you can still get digital access to your notices by linking the case to a USCIS online account. Create an account at uscis.gov, choose “Add a paper-filed case” from the My Account menu, and enter your receipt number. Cases with receipt numbers beginning with “IOE” are linked using the Online Access Code printed on your Account Access Notice.12U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. How to Create a USCIS Online Account Once linked, you can view notices, upload evidence, and message the office handling your case.

Fixing Errors on the Notice

Check the notice the day it arrives. Look at the spelling of your name, your date of birth, the receipt date, the form type, and the address.

If USCIS caused the mistake, such as a misspelled name or wrong date, use the agency’s typographic error e-Request tool at egov.uscis.gov/e-request/typo. You’ll need your receipt number, A-Number if applicable, a description of the error, the filing date, and an email address.13U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. e-Request – Typographic Error If the change stems from something on your end, like a legal name change after filing, the typo tool doesn’t apply. Follow the instructions on the USCIS “Updating or Correcting Your Documents” page instead.

If the Notice Never Arrives

USCIS says receipt notices typically go out within about 30 days of filing, but the agency asks you to wait at least 60 days before filing a formal non-delivery inquiry. Once 60 days have passed, use the e-Request non-delivery tool at egov.uscis.gov/e-request/ndn. You’ll need the receipt number if you have it, A-Number if applicable, filing date, form type, and an email address.14U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. e-Request – Non-Delivery of Notice

One practical tip. If you paid by check and it has already cleared, look at the back of the cashed check. The 13-character receipt number is often stamped there, and that number is often your only way back into the system when no notice ever arrived.

If the online tool doesn’t resolve it, call the USCIS Contact Center with your shipping tracking numbers and delivery dates in hand.15U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Contact Center

Keep Your Address Current

Missing notices are often address problems rather than processing problems. All noncitizens in the United States must report a change of address to USCIS within 10 days of moving, at uscis.gov/addresschange.16U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. How to Change Your Address The requirement applies while an application is pending, and a returned notice does not pause deadlines for biometrics, interviews, or evidence requests.
