USCIS Biometrics Code 5: Meaning, What to Bring, and Appointment

If your Form I-797C biometrics appointment notice shows USCIS biometrics Code 5, it means the Application Support Center will collect a limited set of biometrics from you: fingerprints from one hand (four prints), a digital photograph, and a signature.1Capitol Immigration Law Group. How Code 5 Compares to the Other Biometrics Codes

Each biometrics notice carries a code that tells ASC staff exactly what to collect. USCIS picks the code based on the type of application and other case-specific factors.1Capitol Immigration Law Group. What to Expect at Your USCIS Biometrics Appointment There are four:

The key difference is fingerprint volume. Codes 1 and 3 send all 10 prints to the FBI for a full criminal history search. Code 5 collects only partial prints, and its purpose is identity verification rather than a full FBI background check.

Why You Got Code 5

USCIS does not publish a list matching application types to codes. The agency says only that the code is “determined based on the type of an application and certain relevant case factors.”1Capitol Immigration Law Group. What to Expect at Your USCIS Biometrics Appointment In practice, Code 5 has shown up on notices for Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, where the point of the appointment is capturing an identity photo and print for the EAD card itself rather than running a fresh 10-print criminal check.2Avvo. Attorneys responding to applicants worried about Code 5 have emphasized the same point: a shorter list of biometrics doesn’t mean anything negative about your case. It means USCIS already has what it needs for background purposes, or doesn’t require full prints for this particular filing, and simply needs enough data to confirm you are who you say you are and to produce your document.2Avvo. What to Bring

Regardless of code, bring two things to the ASC:

What Happens at the Appointment

The appointment is short, usually around 20 minutes.5USAHello. USCIS Biometrics Appointment A technician checks you in, verifies your ID, and then collects the items your code calls for. For Code 5, that means:

  • Fingerprints from one hand (four prints).
  • A digital photograph.
  • Your signature, captured electronically.

The technician stamps your appointment notice when the collection is complete. Keep the stamped notice; it’s your proof that you appeared.

If You Can’t Make the Appointment

Missing a biometrics appointment is not a small thing. USCIS treats a no-show as abandonment of the underlying application, petition, or request, which results in denial.4USCIS. Policy Manual, Volume 1, Part C, Chapter 2 Reschedule before the date if you can’t attend.

Rescheduling has to go through one of two channels: your myUSCIS online account, or the USCIS Contact Center at 800-375-5283. USCIS does not accept reschedule requests by mail or in person at a field office. Online requests must be submitted at least 12 hours before the scheduled time. Inside that 12-hour window, or after the appointment has already passed, you have to call the Contact Center or use the virtual assistant.6USCIS. Preparing for Your Biometric Services Appointment

USCIS requires “good cause” to reschedule. Acceptable reasons include illness or hospitalization, a significant life event such as a wedding or funeral, previously planned travel, inability to get transportation or time off work, or a notice that arrived late or not at all.4USCIS. Policy Manual, Volume 1, Part C, Chapter 2

Already missed it? The situation is harder but not always final. If the benefit request is still pending, USCIS may consider a late reschedule request, weighing how much time has passed, why you missed the appointment, and whether denial would cause undue hardship or expense. Late requests can only be made through the USCIS Contact Center, not online, by mail, or in person.4USCIS. Policy Manual, Volume 1, Part C, Chapter 2
