USCIS Application Support Center (ASC): Visit, Fees, Rescheduling

A USCIS Application Support Center is a federal facility whose only job is to collect biometrics — fingerprints, a photograph, and an electronic signature — from people with pending immigration applications. Application Support Centers do not conduct interviews, accept new filings, or give case status updates. If your application requires biometrics, USCIS will mail you a notice with a date, time, and assigned location, and attending that appointment is how the agency verifies your identity and runs the required background checks.¹

What Happens at the Appointment

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(9), USCIS can require any applicant, petitioner, sponsor, or beneficiary to appear for biometric collection.² A technician uses an electronic scanner to capture digital fingerprints from all ten fingers. No ink. A digital photograph follows, then an electronic signature on a touchpad. Check-in, wait, and collection together usually run under 30 minutes.

The captured data has two jobs: confirming you are who you say you are, and feeding FBI and DHS databases for criminal-history and national-security checks. Until those checks clear, USCIS generally cannot move your case forward, which is why a missed appointment can stall or derail a benefit request entirely.³

What to Bring

The one document you cannot forget is your Form I-797C, Notice of Action. It carries your appointment details and receipt number, and without it the center may not be able to process you.⁴ Keep it in a bag you carry with you, not in checked luggage or at home.

You also need valid, unexpired photo identification. USCIS specifically lists a Permanent Resident Card, passport, or driver’s license as acceptable.³ The name on your ID must match the name on your notice. If it doesn’t, because of a marriage, divorce, or court-ordered change, bring the certificate or court order so staff can reconcile the two.

Children under 14 are not required to sign, though they may if they can. A parent or legal guardian can sign for a child, but the minor still needs to attend in person for fingerprints and a photo.³

Rules Inside the Facility

Application Support Centers are federal buildings, so standard federal security rules apply. Weapons, explosives, and illegal items are prohibited, and trying to bring them in can lead to detention or arrest.⁵

Phones are treated differently. Depending on the site, you may be allowed to carry yours inside, but USCIS policy prohibits photography and recording at all USCIS offices except during naturalization ceremonies. Silence your phone in the waiting area and turn it off while you are being served.⁶ Arriving about 15 minutes early gives you time to clear security and check in without feeling rushed. Entry is generally limited to the applicant, with attorneys of record and interpreters sometimes permitted when their presence has been arranged in advance.

Finding Your Assigned ASC (and Going Earlier)

You don’t choose your Application Support Center. USCIS assigns one based on your home address, and the assignment is printed on your I-797C. If you want to see where centers are located before the notice arrives, USCIS maintains a locator on its website that searches by ZIP code or state.¹ Centers are fewer in number than USCIS field offices, so some applicants travel a fair distance.

One thing worth knowing: the regulation actually permits you to appear before your scheduled date. Whether you are seen depends on that center’s capacity that day, so early arrival isn’t guaranteed to work everywhere, but it is an option the rule explicitly allows.²

Do You Pay a Separate Biometrics Fee?

Not anymore. USCIS previously charged an $85 biometrics services fee on top of each filing fee. The 2024 fee rule folded that cost into the filing fees themselves.⁷ If you filed under the current schedule, biometrics are already paid for.

Applicants who cannot afford filing fees can request a waiver using Form I-912, showing inability to pay through income evidence, financial hardship, or receipt of means-tested benefits. A single I-912 can cover multiple family applications filed at the same time.⁸

Some applicants are exempt by regulation rather than waiver. Applicants over 79 filing Form I-485 for adjustment of status, for example, are not required to submit biometrics or pay for them. That exemption is form-specific: the same person filing Form I-90 to replace a Green Card would not get an age-based exemption.⁹ Check the instructions for your specific form.

When You May Not Need a New Appointment

If you file a new application within 36 months of an earlier biometrics appointment, USCIS may reuse your photograph instead of scheduling you again.¹⁰ Reuse is not available for several of the most common filings. You will need to attend a new appointment regardless of timing if you are filing:

Form N-400, Application for Naturalization
Form N-600, Application for Certificate of Citizenship
Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card
Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status

USCIS also keeps discretion to require a fresh photograph from anyone within the 36-month window, and it will never reuse self-submitted photographs.¹¹

Rescheduling Before Your Date

If the date doesn’t work, the regulation gives you three options: appear on an earlier date, request a reschedule for good cause, or withdraw the benefit request.² Most people will reschedule.

Timely reschedule requests (submitted before the appointment) go through your myUSCIS online account or the USCIS Contact Center at 800-375-5283. Mail and in-person requests are not accepted.¹¹ You will need the receipt number from your I-797C. Once USCIS approves the request, a new notice with the revised details is mailed to you.

“Good cause” is read broadly by USCIS and includes illness or hospitalization, previously planned travel, significant life events like a wedding or funeral, transportation problems, inability to get time off work or arrange childcare, and a late-delivered appointment notice. There are limits: the online tool will not reschedule an appointment that has already been rescheduled twice or more, or one within 12 hours.¹²

If You Miss the Appointment

This is where the stakes rise. If you don’t show and didn’t reschedule beforehand, USCIS can treat your application as abandoned and deny it.³ An abandonment denial means losing your filing fee and starting the entire process over with a new application and a new payment.

After the date has passed, USCIS only accepts untimely reschedule requests through the Contact Center. Not the online tool, not mail, not in person. The agency weighs how much time has passed, whether you have a good reason for the no-show, and whether a denial would cause you undue hardship. Approval is discretionary and not guaranteed.¹¹ The practical rule: treat the biometrics appointment as non-negotiable, and if something comes up, reschedule before the date passes.
