US Visa Renewal in India: Interview Waiver, Docs, and Fees

US visa renewal in India runs through the USTravelDocs portal and one of five consular posts: the embassy in New Delhi and the consulates in Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata. Since October 1, 2025, the interview waiver (“dropbox”) route has been narrowed sharply. Unless you are renewing a B-1/B-2 or H-2A visa within 12 months of its expiration, or you hold a diplomatic or official classification, plan on a full in-person interview, even if you used dropbox last time.

Can You Skip the Interview

The authority to waive a consular interview sits in Section 222(h) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, at 8 U.S.C. § 1202(h).1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 8 USC 1202 – Application for Visas Effective October 1, 2025, the State Department limited interview waivers for renewals to two categories:

  • B-1/B-2 visitor visas, renewed within 12 months of the prior visa’s expiration, where the prior visa was issued at full validity and you were at least 18 when it was issued.
  • H-2A agricultural worker visas, on the same conditions.

Diplomatic and official visa holders (A, G, NATO, and similar classifications) remain eligible under separate provisions.2U.S. Department of State. Interview Waiver Update September 18, 2025

Three other conditions apply even inside those categories: you must apply from your country of nationality or usual residence, you must have no unresolved prior visa refusal, and the consular officer must see no apparent ground of ineligibility. A consular officer can still require an in-person appearance at their discretion.

One practical note for tourist and business travelers: because B-1/B-2 visas issued to Indian nationals carry 10-year validity, most renewals will fall outside the 12-month window and require a full interview anyway.3U.S. Department of State. India Visa Reciprocity and Civil Documents

Who Now Needs a Full Interview

The October 2025 changes ended the blanket age-based waivers that had let children under 14 and adults over 79 skip interviews. Applicants in those age groups now generally need to appear in person unless they fall into the narrow renewal or diplomatic categories above.2U.S. Department of State. Interview Waiver Update September 18, 2025 Families planning a group renewal often miss this and prepare for a dropbox they no longer qualify for.

For H-1B, L-1, F-1, O-1, and other work and study visas, the dropbox is no longer an option for renewals. You will need an interview appointment.

The statute itself also mandates an in-person interview, regardless of any waiver policy, for anyone who:

  • Is not a national or resident of the country where they are applying;
  • Has a prior visa refusal that was not overcome or waived;
  • Appears in the Consular Lookout and Support System;
  • Is a national of a state sponsor of terrorism; or
  • Requires a security advisory opinion or prior Department of State clearance.

If your previous visa page carries an annotation indicating a security review was done before issuance, the statute generally requires an interview for your renewal too.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 8 USC 1202 – Application for Visas Check the current guidance on the USTravelDocs India portal before assuming otherwise.

Documents You Need

Every renewal starts with the DS-160, the online nonimmigrant visa application.4U.S. Department of State. Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application (DS-160) Complete it carefully; the answers become part of your permanent record. Print the confirmation page with its barcode.

Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay in the United States.5U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Six-Month Validity Update Bring both your current passport and any older passport that contains your previous U.S. visa. If the prior visa sits in an expired passport, include that passport in your submission.

You also need a compliant digital photo uploaded with the DS-160 (JPEG, square, plain white or off-white background, neutral expression, both eyes open) and a printed 2 × 2 inch copy for the appointment.6U.S. Department of State. Digital Image Requirements Photo rejections are a common cause of delays.

Category-specific documents come on top of the core set. F-1 students bring the current I-20. H-1B and L-1 applicants bring the I-797 approval notice and typically an employment verification letter. Bring anything that supports the classification you are renewing.

Fees

The Machine Readable Visa (MRV) fee applies to every application:

  • $185 for non-petition-based visas, including B-1/B-2, F-1, and J-1.
  • $205 for petition-based work visas: H-1B, L-1, O-1, P, Q, and R.

The MRV fee is nonrefundable, including if your visa is denied.7U.S. Department of State. Fees for Visa Services Pay through the USTravelDocs portal, which generates a slip for payment at a designated bank branch. The receipt number links to your appointment profile.

Students and exchange visitors have a separate SEVIS fee, paid before the visa appointment: $350 for F-1 and M-1 students, and $220 for most J-1 exchange visitors. Certain government-sponsored J-1 visitors pay $35 or nothing.8U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. I-901 SEVIS Fee Pay this directly on the SEVP website.

How to Submit Through USTravelDocs

USTravelDocs is the only channel for managing your appointment logistics in India. Create an account, enter your DS-160 confirmation number, link your MRV fee receipt, and choose a Visa Application Center (VAC) location. The portal also asks how you want your passport returned: courier delivery or personal pickup at a VAC.

If you qualify for an interview waiver, the portal books a dropbox appointment at a VAC. You hand over your passport and supporting documents to VAC staff at the scheduled time and leave. No consular officer is present; the VAC forwards your materials to the consular section for review.

If you need a full interview, the portal books you at the embassy or a consulate. Bring your appointment confirmation, DS-160 confirmation page, MRV fee receipt, current and old passports, photo, and category-specific documents. The interview itself is usually short, often under five minutes, and covers the purpose of your trip, your ties to India, and your work or study plans. Most decisions are made on the spot. If approved, the consulate keeps your passport for visa printing and returns it through the VAC.

Processing Times and Tracking

For dropbox submissions at U.S. Mission India posts, plan on roughly three weeks from the VAC handover to passport return. Peak periods, especially the weeks before the U.S. academic year begins, push that longer.

For interview appointments, the wait for a slot is usually the bigger bottleneck than post-interview processing. The State Department publishes current wait-time estimates for each Indian post; check them before choosing a location.

Track your case through the USTravelDocs portal or the CEAC website using your DS-160 barcode. “Application Received” means your file is pending; “Issued” means the new visa has been printed and your passport is heading into the return pipeline.

If You Get a 221(g) or Administrative Processing

A 221(g) notice is not a denial. It means the officer needs more time, more documents, or both.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 8 USC 1202 – Application for Visas The letter typically lists the specific documents to submit and how to return them without a new appointment. Read it carefully; the response route depends on what was flagged.

Applications can also go into extended review without a 221(g) form, particularly where national security screening is triggered by the applicant’s background or field of work. The consulate normally keeps your passport during this period, so international travel is not possible until it clears. Requesting your passport back for urgent travel may delay or effectively withdraw the application.

Applicants in sensitive scientific and technical fields see this more often. The State Department maintains a Technology Alert List tied to U.S. export control rules, covering areas such as artificial intelligence, cryptography, nuclear technology, aerospace engineering, and biotechnology. Administrative processing for flagged applicants commonly runs 30 to 45 days and sometimes longer. It cannot be expedited, and clearance on a previous renewal does not carry forward; each application is reviewed on its own. If your work is in one of these areas, start the renewal well before any planned travel.
