The U.S. Visa Interview Waiver Program in India, often called “dropbox,” is now available only for B1/B2 visitor visa renewals and H-2A agricultural worker renewals, and only if your previous visa expired no more than 12 months ago. The Department of State cut back the program on October 1, 2025. If you hold an H-1B, L-1, F-1, or most other nonimmigrant visas, you no longer qualify for the waiver in India and must attend an in-person consular interview to renew.1U.S. Department of State. Who Still Qualifies for the Interview Waiver
The surviving categories are narrow. As of 2026, dropbox is available to:
- B1/B2 visitor visa renewals. Your previous B1/B2 visa must have been issued for its full validity period, must have expired no more than 12 months ago, and you must have been at least 18 years old when it was issued.
- H-2A agricultural worker visa renewals. Same conditions: full validity at issuance, expired within 12 months, and you were at least 18 when the prior visa was issued.
- Diplomatic and official visa holders. Applicants in A-1, A-2, G-1 through G-4, NATO, and certain C-3 categories remain eligible through a separate process.
Everyone else applies through a standard in-person interview.1U.S. Department of State. Interview Waiver Update September 18, 2025
Who No Longer Qualifies
For several years after the pandemic, dropbox covered a much wider group. Renewals in the same classification qualified even if the prior visa had expired up to 48 months earlier, and the list included H-1B, L-1, F-1, and others. The October 2025 update pulled the program back to the baseline in federal statute, which limits interview waivers to renewals filed within 12 months of the prior visa’s expiration.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 8 USC 1202 – Application for Visas
The blanket age-based exemptions also ended. Children under 14 and adults over 79 previously could skip the interview regardless of visa type. Under the current policy, they generally cannot, unless they fall within one of the surviving waiver categories above.1U.S. Department of State. Interview Waiver Update September 18, 2025
So if you’re renewing an F-1 student visa, an H-1B, an L-1 transfer, an O-1, or a J-1 exchange visa in India, the dropbox option is not available to you. You must book a standard consular interview. And if your B1/B2 visa expired more than 12 months ago, you don’t qualify either.
Other Conditions You Must Meet
Belonging to a surviving category and being inside the 12-month window is necessary, not sufficient. Three more conditions apply.
You must apply from your country of nationality or usual residence. For Indian nationals renewing in India, that’s straightforward. A foreign national who happens to be in India temporarily generally will not qualify unless India is their usual place of residence.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 8 USC 1202 – Application for Visas
You must not have had a U.S. visa refused, unless the refusal was later overcome or formally waived. A prior 221(g) administrative processing hold that was resolved and led to a visa issuance generally does not count as a refusal for this purpose. A flat denial under Section 214(b), or a security-related refusal, would disqualify you.1U.S. Department of State. Interview Waiver Update September 18, 2025
There must be no indication of any prior U.S. immigration violation, such as an overstay or unauthorized work. And a consular officer keeps discretion to require an in-person interview in any case, for any reason.
Documents You Need
The dropbox packet is shorter than what you’d assemble for a full interview, but every item must be exact. A mismatch between your DS-160 and your passport is enough to stall the application.
- DS-160 confirmation page. Complete the Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application at ceac.state.gov and print the confirmation page with the barcode.3U.S. Department of State. Consular Electronic Application Center
- Current passport. Valid for at least six months beyond your intended period of stay in the United States.
- Previous passport. If your most recently issued U.S. visa sits in an older passport, include it so the consulate can verify the prior visa.
- Photo. One 2-by-2-inch color photo taken within the past six months, plain white or off-white background, neutral expression, both eyes open. No eyeglasses, except with documented medical necessity.4U.S. Department of State. Photo Requirements
- Interview waiver confirmation letter. Generated by the scheduling portal once the system finds you eligible. Print it and confirm every detail matches your passport and DS-160.
- MRV fee receipt. Proof of payment for the Machine Readable Visa fee.
Do not add unsolicited materials like bank statements or invitation letters. Dropbox review relies on the DS-160 record and your prior visa history. Extra paperwork won’t help and may slow things down.
Fees
The MRV application fee for a B1/B2 visitor visa is $185. Student (F) and other non-petition-based categories also fall under the $185 fee. Petition-based visas (H and L) carry a $205 fee, though those categories are now largely ineligible for dropbox.5U.S. Department of State. Fees for Visa Services
Passport delivery is separate. Premium courier service through Blue Dart runs about INR 1,200 per application if you want the passport delivered to your home rather than picking it up at a Visa Application Center. That fee is paid at document collection or submission, not during online scheduling.
How to Apply and Submit
The entire process runs through USVisaScheduling.com, which replaced the older ustraveldocs system.
Start with the DS-160 at ceac.state.gov. Be careful with your name, passport number, and travel history. Errors show up only after you’ve dropped off documents and the consulate tries to match records. Once you have the DS-160 confirmation number, create an account on USVisaScheduling.com, start a new application, choose India, select your visa category, and enter your DS-160 number and personal details.
The portal runs an eligibility check. If you qualify, it offers a “Drop-Off” appointment option instead of a regular interview slot. Pick a date and location, pay the MRV fee through one of the accepted methods, and print the confirmation letter.
On your appointment day, bring the full packet to the designated Visa Application Center. Staff there run a preliminary check to confirm the DS-160 confirmation page, waiver letter, passport, and photo are present and consistent. No consular officer is on site at this stage. The center collects the documents and forwards them to the processing consulate.
Where Your Application Is Processed
U.S. Mission India centralizes visa processing at designated consulates. B1/B2 interview waiver applications are consolidated in New Delhi regardless of the city where you drop off. A packet submitted at a VAC in Mumbai or Chennai still routes to New Delhi for adjudication. H-2A dropbox applications, where they apply, are processed through Chennai.
That means your timeline depends on the queue at the hub, not the workload of your local consulate. Peak travel months, typically summer, run longer than the off-season.
Tracking and Passport Return
You can check status through USVisaScheduling.com or the CEAC case status checker at ceac.state.gov. Both update when a decision is made. Neither gives real-time updates while your case is under review.
Once processing is done, your passport is shipped via Blue Dart. Use the UID number from your appointment confirmation letter to track delivery on Blue Dart’s tracking site. Depending on the option you chose during scheduling, the passport goes either to a VAC for pickup or directly to your home address. VAC-ready passports usually arrive within two to three days of a status change, with delays of up to a week in busy periods.
If You Get a 221(g) Notice
Not every dropbox case moves straight through. If a consular officer wants a closer look, they can issue a notice under Section 221(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act. This is a pause, not a denial. The notice may ask you to submit further documents or appear in person.
If you’re asked for additional documentation, you have one year from the date of the notice to provide it. Miss that window and the application lapses. You’d have to start over with a new DS-160 and pay the MRV fee again.6U.S. Department of State. Administrative Processing Information If you’re asked to appear, book a regular interview through the scheduling portal.
While administrative processing is running, the CEAC status may display “Refused.” That reflects the 221(g) hold, not a final decision. The case stays in that state until the officer finishes review and issues a final adjudication.
Common Mistakes That Derail Dropbox Applications
The most frequent error right now is assuming you still qualify under the pre-October 2025 rules. Applicants who used dropbox successfully for H-1B or L-1 renewals in the past often start again without realizing the rules changed. The portal’s eligibility check should catch this, but the surprise when the drop-off option doesn’t appear costs people time.
Other recurring problems: submitting an expired passport without the current one, using a photo older than six months, and data mismatches between the DS-160 and the passport. The DS-160 is unforgiving. Enter the wrong passport number or misspell your name and the consulate’s system cannot link your digital application to the physical documents you dropped off. Corrections after submission require starting a new DS-160, so verify every field before you print the confirmation page.
Watch the 12-month expiration window carefully. If your B1/B2 visa expired on March 15, 2025, your dropbox appointment must fall before March 15, 2026. The system may allow scheduling past that date, but the reviewing officer will flag the timing and can reject the application or require an in-person interview.
