To get a US visa from India, you complete Form DS-160 online, pay the visa application fee, give fingerprints at a Visa Application Center, and attend an interview at the US Embassy in New Delhi or a consulate in Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, or Kolkata. A consular officer decides your case, usually at the interview itself. What varies most is the wait: interview appointments for visitor visas run from about one month in Chennai to roughly ten months in Mumbai, so the city you apply in can matter as much as the paperwork you bring.1U.S. Department of State. Pick the Right Visa Category First
Everything else depends on this choice.
The B-1 covers short business trips such as conferences or contract negotiations. The B-2 is for tourism, medical treatment, or family visits. For both, federal law presumes you intend to immigrate unless you prove otherwise. That presumption comes from Section 214(b) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, and it puts the burden on you to show strong ties to India and a clear reason to return.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 8 U.S.C. 1184 – Admission of Nonimmigrants
The H-1B is for specialty occupations and needs a qualifying degree and a sponsoring US employer. The L-1 lets a company transfer a manager, executive, or specialized-knowledge employee from an Indian office to a US one. H-1B and L-1 applicants are exempt from the presumption of immigrant intent, so the interview is less adversarial on that specific point.3U.S. Department of State. Visa Denials
The F-1 is the student visa. It requires full-time enrollment at a school certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), in a program that leads to a degree, diploma, or certificate.4U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Students and Employment F-1 students, unlike H-1B holders, must show they intend to return to India after their studies.
Spouses of US citizens who plan to live permanently in the United States use immigrant categories such as CR-1 or IR-1. These require proof of a genuine marriage, background checks, and a medical examination, and there is no need to show intent to return.
One boundary worth naming up front. The H-1B has an annual cap and is awarded through a weighted lottery run by USCIS before your consular application even begins.5U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Fill Out the DS-160 and Gather Your Documents
Every nonimmigrant applicant starts with Form DS-160, filed online through the Consular Electronic Application Center.7U.S. Department of State. Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application Set aside about 90 minutes. It asks about your personal history, past travel, employment, education, and security-related matters. Answer carefully. Discrepancies between the DS-160 and what you say at the interview can raise red flags or lead to a finding of misrepresentation.
The form needs a digital photo taken within the last six months, in color, against a plain white or off-white background, with a neutral expression and full face visible. Eyeglasses are not permitted except in rare cases involving recent eye surgery, which requires a signed medical statement.8U.S. Department of State. Photo Requirements
You’ll need a valid Indian passport. A widespread belief is that it must be valid for six months beyond your travel dates. India is on the list of countries exempt from that six-month rule, so your passport only needs to cover your intended stay.9U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Six-Month Passport Validity Update A passport that expires shortly after your trip can still cause practical headaches, so renewing before you apply is the safer path.
Bring financial evidence that shows you can support yourself in the United States without working illegally: recent bank statements, income tax returns, property records, and anything documenting economic ties to India. Consular officers weigh these when judging the risk of overstay.
If you’re applying for a petition-based visa like the H-1B or L-1, add the I-797 approval notice from USCIS. Without it, the consular officer cannot process the application.10U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Form I-797 Types and Functions
F-1 applicants need an acceptance letter from an SEVP-certified school and the Form I-20 that school issues.
What You’ll Pay
The Machine Readable Visa (MRV) fee depends on category:
- $185 for non-petition visas including B-1/B-2, F-1, J-1, and most other categories
- $205 for petition-based visas including H-1B, L-1, O-1, P, Q, and R
- $315 for E-category treaty trader and investor visas
- $265 for K-category fiancé(e) or spouse visas
The MRV fee is not refunded if your visa is denied.11U.S. Department of State. Fees for Visa Services In India you can pay by electronic fund transfer or in cash at designated bank branches; the scheduling portal shows current payment instructions after you set up a profile.
Indian applicants catch a break on the reciprocity fee, an extra charge some nationalities pay when the visa is actually issued. It is zero for B-1/B-2, H-1B, and L-1.12U.S. Department of State. India Reciprocity Schedule

Wait times for interview appointments swing widely by city and category. As of mid-2026:
- Chennai: roughly 1 month for B-1/B-2, 1 month for student visas, 2 months for petition-based (H, L, O, P, Q)
- New Delhi: roughly 8 months for B-1/B-2, under 2 weeks for student visas, under 2 weeks for petition-based
- Hyderabad: roughly 8 months for B-1/B-2, 2.5 months for student visas, 3 months for petition-based
- Mumbai: roughly 10 months for B-1/B-2, 2.5 months for student visas, 1.5 months for petition-based

The Interview Waiver (Dropbox) Route
Some applicants renewing a US visa qualify for an interview waiver, often called the “dropbox” process because you submit documents at a Visa Application Center without sitting for an interview. The State Department narrowed the qualifying categories effective late 2025, and eligibility depends on your visa category, prior visa history, and whether your last application had any problems. Check the current rules on the Embassy’s site before assuming you qualify.
If eligible, you can submit documents at any of the five main Visa Application Centers. For a fee of approximately ₹1,200 per application, Document Dropoff Centers in additional cities including Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Cochin, Jalandhar, and Pune are also available. B-1/B-2 interview waiver appointments have been consolidated primarily in New Delhi, where availability is best.16U.S. Embassy & Consulates in India. Visas
Even if you meet the published criteria, the consular officer can require you to appear in person, and that appearance may need to happen in New Delhi regardless of where you originally submitted.
The Consular Interview
Security at the Embassy and Consulates is strict. Electronic devices and large bags aren’t allowed inside, so leave your phone and laptop in your car or with someone outside. After screening, you’ll wait to be called.
The interview is usually short. The officer will ask about the purpose of your trip, your ties to India, and your plans after the visit. For B-1/B-2 applicants, the central question is whether you’ve shown enough reason to return home. For H-1B and L-1 applicants, the focus turns to the job and your qualifications. Organized documents and honest, direct answers do more for you than rehearsed lines.
Most of the time, the officer tells you the outcome at the window. If approved, the consulate keeps your passport to affix the visa foil. If denied, you’ll usually receive a written notice explaining the legal basis.
Administrative Processing Under Section 221(g)
Sometimes the officer neither approves nor denies your visa on the spot. The application goes into administrative processing under Section 221(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, meaning eligibility hasn’t been established but more information or an internal review might resolve it.17U.S. Department of State. Administrative Processing Information
A 221(g) notice usually takes one of two forms. In some cases, the officer asks you to submit specific documents such as employer verification letters or educational credentials. In others, the case is referred for a background or security review that doesn’t require anything further from you. The officer will tell you which situation applies.
If documents are requested, submit them quickly. You have one year from the notice date to respond. Miss that deadline and you’ll start the application over, including paying the MRV fee again.17U.S. Department of State. Administrative Processing Information Simple document requests can be resolved within weeks. Security-related reviews are unpredictable and sometimes take months. The State Department asks that you not inquire about your case until at least 180 days have passed.
Getting Your Passport Back
Once the visa foil is placed in your passport, it comes back to you by home delivery or pickup at a designated center. You choose between those options when you schedule the appointment. For pickup, bring a valid government-issued photo ID.
Before you book any travel, check every detail on the visa foil: your name, passport number, visa category, validity dates, and number of permitted entries. Errors at the port of entry are far harder to fix once you’ve left the consulate. If something is wrong, contact the consulate before making travel plans.
If Your Visa Is Denied Under Section 214(b)
The most common reason for a nonimmigrant visa denial is Section 214(b): the officer wasn’t satisfied that you overcame the presumption of immigrant intent. In practice that usually means you didn’t show strong enough ties to India, or you didn’t clearly establish that you qualified for the visa category you applied for.3U.S. Department of State. Visa Denials
A 214(b) denial isn’t permanent, and there’s no formal waiting period. There’s also no appeal. To try again, you file a new DS-160, pay the fee again, and schedule a new interview. What matters is having something materially different to present: a new job, stronger financial documentation, a more concrete travel purpose, or another change in circumstances that speaks to the concern the officer raised.3U.S. Department of State. Visa Denials Reapplying with the same profile and hoping for a different officer is $185 wasted.
