For a B1/B2 dropbox renewal in India, the US visa dropbox documents you carry to the Visa Application Center are your current passport, the previous passport containing your prior US visa, the printed DS-160 confirmation page, your appointment confirmation letter, the MRV fee receipt, and one printed color photograph meeting US visa specifications. Assemble the packet only after you have confirmed you still qualify under the rules the Department of State tightened on October 1, 2025, because a submission from an ineligible applicant is turned away or converted to an in-person interview.
The Document Checklist
Every item below has to be in the packet when you hand it over. Missing one means rebooking.
- Current passport. It must be valid for at least the duration of your intended stay in the United States. Indian citizens are exempt from the six-month validity rule that applies to many other nationalities, so you do not need six months of remaining validity beyond your travel dates.1U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Six-Month Validity Update
- Previous passport with your prior US visa. If your last B1/B2 sits in an expired passport, bring that book too. The consular officer needs to see the earlier visa to verify renewal eligibility.
- DS-160 confirmation page. The printed page with the scannable barcode from your completed online nonimmigrant visa application. The barcode links to your application data so the consular section can retrieve it electronically.
- Appointment confirmation letter. Generated through the official visa scheduling portal after you pay the MRV fee and book a dropoff slot.
- MRV fee receipt. Proof you paid the $185 nonimmigrant visa application processing fee that covers B1/B2 applications. The fee is nonrefundable, and the receipt is valid for 365 days from the date of payment.2U.S. Department of State. Fees for Visa Services
- One color photograph. A recent print meeting the US visa specifications set out below. Bring a physical copy even though you also uploaded a digital version with your DS-160.
Photo Specifications
Photo rejections are one of the most common reasons for delays at the counter, and the rules are strict:
- Size: 2 inches by 2 inches (5 cm by 5 cm).
- Taken within the last six months.
- Plain white or off-white background.
- Head measured from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin must fill 50 to 70 percent of the photo’s height, roughly 1 inch to 1⅜ inches.
- No eyeglasses, including prescription lenses.
Print on photo-quality paper, not regular printer paper. A photo that passed the online DS-160 upload can still be rejected in print if the color or resolution is poor.
If You Corrected Your DS-160 After Booking
This trips up applicants who realize an error after scheduling. If your appointment was booked on or after November 15, 2023, and you edited the DS-160 afterward, bring both the original confirmation page used to schedule the appointment and the corrected confirmation page. Showing up with only the corrected version can result in refusal at the counter. Check that the DS-160 confirmation number on your appointment letter matches the confirmation page you carry.3U.S. Embassy & Consulates in India. U.S. Embassy and Consulates in India – Visas
Confirm You Still Qualify Before Assembling the Packet
The October 1, 2025 update narrowed dropbox eligibility. Even a perfectly assembled packet fails if you no longer meet the rules. You qualify only if all of the following are true:
- Your previous B1/B2 visa is still valid or expired no more than 12 months ago. The pandemic-era 48-month window no longer applies.
- Your prior visa was issued for the full standard 10-year B1/B2 validity, not a shortened term.
- You were at least 18 when the prior visa was issued. The earlier threshold of 14 is gone.
- You are renewing the same visa class. A prior B1/B2 does not support a dropbox submission for H, L, or any other category.
- Your prior visa was issued in India. Visas issued at US embassies in other countries do not count.
- Your prior visa carries no adverse annotation such as “Clearance Received.”
The earlier exemptions for children under 14 and adults over 79 ended on October 1, 2025. All first-time applicants now need an in-person interview regardless of age.4U.S. Department of State. Interview Waiver Update September 18, 2025 A prior refusal or any finding of inadmissibility also removes the dropbox option. And a consular officer can convert any dropbox submission into an in-person interview if something in the file raises questions. The waiver is a convenience, not a guarantee.
Where to Hand In the Packet
Since March 2024, all B1/B2 interview waiver applications are adjudicated by the US Embassy in New Delhi, wherever you drop your documents. You can submit for free at any of the five main Visa Application Centers: Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, or New Delhi. The VAC forwards your packet to New Delhi.3U.S. Embassy & Consulates in India. U.S. Embassy and Consulates in India – Visas
If none of those cities is convenient, Document Dropoff Centers operate in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Cochin, Jalandhar, and Pune. These charge 1,200 rupees per application.3U.S. Embassy & Consulates in India. U.S. Embassy and Consulates in India – Visas
One practical note about the New Delhi consolidation: interview waiver slots in Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Mumbai are extremely limited, while New Delhi tends to have more availability. If you are flexible about location, New Delhi often means a shorter wait for an appointment.
What Happens at Drop-off and After
Arrive at your VAC or Dropoff Center at the time on your appointment confirmation letter. Staff will run a preliminary check to confirm every document is present and that the photo meets size requirements. Anything missing, and you will be sent away to rebook. Once accepted, your documents move to the Embassy in New Delhi, and you can track status online using your DS-160 barcode number. Updates typically move from “Application Received” to “Approved” and then “Issued” once the visa is printed and the passport is on its way back.
If the consular officer decides an interview is necessary, your passport is returned without a visa and you must schedule an interview in New Delhi, since that is where B1/B2 interview waiver cases are now processed.3U.S. Embassy & Consulates in India. U.S. Embassy and Consulates in India – Visas
If the officer needs more paperwork rather than a full interview, you may receive a Section 221(g) notice placing your application in administrative processing and listing what to submit. Print the document submission letter, bring the requested documents and the 221(g) slip to the nearest dropoff location, and the VAC forwards everything to the Embassy. Your passport is returned to your chosen pickup point once a decision is made. There is no guaranteed timeline for administrative processing. Some cases resolve in a week or two, others take months, so avoid nonrefundable flights if you receive a 221(g).
