The US Consulate in Bangalore is open, but it is not yet offering visa services. If you live in Karnataka and need a US visa, your interview still happens at the Consulate General in Chennai. The Bangalore office, which opened on January 17, 2025, currently focuses on trade and political work while a permanent facility is developed, and no date has been announced for when full consular operations will begin there.
There is one useful exception for Bangalore residents: if you qualify for an interview waiver on a visa renewal, you can drop your documents at a center in Bangalore and skip the trip to Chennai entirely. Details on that are below.
What the Bangalore Consulate Handles Today
The consulate is temporarily housed at the JW Marriott Hotel on Vittal Mallya Road. Its current work is diplomatic and commercial: supporting US-India collaboration in Karnataka on areas including artificial intelligence, semiconductors, supply chains, and digital public infrastructure. It does not accept visa applications, does not conduct visa interviews, and does not provide routine American Citizen Services such as passport renewals, Consular Reports of Birth Abroad, or notarials.
At the opening, US Ambassador Eric Garcetti said the mission would work to bring visa services online “as soon as possible,” and India’s External Affairs Minister urged the US to begin visa operations “at the earliest.” As of early 2026, no launch date has been set.
Where Karnataka Residents Apply: Chennai
Karnataka falls under the Chennai consular district, which also covers Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Lakshadweep, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The Interview Waiver Option and Bangalore Document Drop-Off
This is the part most Bangalore applicants overlook. If you are renewing a US visa and meet the eligibility criteria, you may qualify for an interview waiver, meaning you do not have to appear in person. Since March 2024, B1/B2 interview waiver processing has been consolidated at the US Embassy in New Delhi, but you can submit your paperwork closer to home.
You have two choices. You can drop documents at any of the five Visa Application Centers across India at no extra charge, or you can use a Document Drop-Off Center in Bangalore for a fee of ₹1,200 per application.2U.S. Embassy & Consulates in India. Visas
Eligibility for a waiver depends on your prior visa history, the category you are applying for, and whether your previous visa expired within a defined window. When you begin scheduling on ustraveldocs.com, the portal indicates whether you qualify. If you do, the Chennai trip is off your calendar.
Applying Through Chennai: What You Need
Every nonimmigrant visa starts with the DS-160, filed online through the Department of State’s Consular Electronic Application Center at ceac.state.gov. You will need passport details, dates of your last five visits to the United States (if any), international travel history for the past five years, and information about the planned trip.3U.S. Department of State. Next comes the non-refundable Machine Readable Visa (MRV) fee. Most non-petition categories — including B1/B2 visitor, F and M student, and J exchange visitor visas — are $185. On the day of the interview, bring your passport (valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay), the DS-160 confirmation, the fee receipt, and a printed color photograph against a plain white or off-white background. Supporting documents depend on the visa. Scheduling and Wait Times
All visa appointments in India are scheduled through ustraveldocs.com. The embassy does not accept requests by email.8U.S. Embassy & Consulates in India. Nonimmigrant Visas You book two separate appointments through the same portal: a biometrics visit at a Visa Application Center for fingerprints and a photograph, and the consular interview at Chennai.
As of March 2026, the estimated wait for a B1/B2 visitor visa appointment at Chennai is roughly three months from the date of scheduling, with average processing from fee payment to interview about 3.5 months.9U.S. Department of State. Security Rules at the Consulate
Leave nearly everything at your hotel. US consular facilities in India prohibit all electronic devices, including phones, laptops, tablets, cameras, flash drives, and Bluetooth accessories. Chennai offers storage for mobile phones only, not other electronics. Other prohibited items include food and drinks, cosmetics such as perfume and talcum powder, sealed envelopes, lighters and cigarettes, sharp objects like scissors or nail files, and umbrellas longer than 40 cm closed. Security staff can turn away items not on the list. Getting from Bangalore to Chennai
The route is about 350 kilometers. Direct flights from Kempegowda International Airport to Chennai International Airport take roughly an hour, with multiple daily services on IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet. Trains take around five hours; buses six to seven. For early morning appointments, most applicants fly in the day before or take an overnight train.
The consulate sits at Gemini Circle on Anna Salai, central to hotels in T. Nagar and Nungambakkam. Plan on a full day for the interview once security screening and waiting are counted.
