The University of Pennsylvania’s EIN number is 23-1352685. That nine-digit federal Employer Identification Number belongs to The Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania, which is the legal name you should use on any tax form, gift acknowledgment, or vendor record, not “University of Pennsylvania” or “UPenn.” The mailing address paired with the EIN is 3451 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104.1Federal Demonstration Partnership Expanded Clearinghouse. Getting the legal name right matters. An entry that reads only “UPenn” on a return can slow IRS processing or trigger a rejection on a credit you’re otherwise entitled to.
Using the EIN on Form 8863
Most people looking up this number are filling out IRS Form 8863 to claim the American Opportunity Tax Credit or the Lifetime Learning Credit. The form asks for the school’s EIN, and without it the credit gets rejected.2Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 8863 Enter 23-1352685.

Getting Your 1098-T
UPenn’s EIN also appears preprinted on your Form 1098-T, so if you have that form you don’t need to look the number up separately. UPenn delivers 1098-T forms electronically through Heartland ECSI and the Penn.Pay billing portal.5Penn Student Registration & Financial Services. 1098-T Form Policy Current students can log in and download it once it posts. Schools must furnish the form by January 31, so expect it in late January for the prior tax year.
Alumni can still pull prior-year 1098-T forms directly at heartland.ecsi.net after verifying identity, without contacting Penn’s financial services office.5Penn Student Registration & Financial Services. 1098-T Form Policy
One catch: the university needs a Social Security number or ITIN on file to generate a 1098-T. Students who haven’t provided either won’t receive one automatically.
If You Are an International Student
Students classified as nonresident aliens for tax purposes don’t receive a 1098-T and can’t claim the AOTC or Lifetime Learning Credit, so UPenn’s EIN generally isn’t something they’ll need on a return. Instead, the university issues Form 1042-S to report taxable stipends, scholarships, fellowships, travel grants, and treaty-covered payments. Scholarships that cover only tuition and fees generally don’t generate a 1042-S. The form must be provided by March 15 following the tax year.6University of Pennsylvania ISSS.
