Unknown Intuit Charge: How to Identify, Cancel, or Dispute It

An unknown Intuit charge on your statement almost always comes from one of the company’s products: TurboTax, QuickBooks, or Mailchimp. Intuit runs all its subsidiaries through a shared billing system, so the descriptor on your statement doesn’t always name the specific product. It can also come from a small business you paid that uses QuickBooks Payments to process cards. The fastest way to identify it is Intuit’s free Find a Charge tool, which matches a transaction to the exact account and product that generated it.

Which Intuit Product Likely Billed You

The product mix under the Intuit name is small, and the timing plus dollar amount usually points to one of them.

TurboTax charges cluster in tax season, roughly January through April, and show up as “INTUIT TURBOTAX” or a close variant. Do-it-yourself online filing runs from $0 to $139, expert-assisted returns run $59 to $209, and full-service preparation is around $150.1TurboTax. TurboTax Online 2025-2026 Tax Software and Pricing State returns cost extra on paid tiers, and if you elected to pay your filing fee out of your federal refund, an additional $40 service fee applies.

QuickBooks Online subscriptions recur monthly or annually and appear as “INTUIT QB,” “INTUIT *QBooks,” or “QuickBooks Online.” Current pricing runs $38 per month for Simple Start, $75 and $115 for the mid-tier plans, and $275 for Advanced.2Intuit. QuickBooks Online Pricing Intuit often runs 50%-off promotions for the first three months, so charges of $19, $37.50, $57.50, or $137.50 usually reflect those introductory rates.

Mailchimp typically bills under the Mailchimp name rather than “Intuit.” Credit Karma is free and does not charge for credit scores, reports, or its core monitoring tools.3Credit Karma. How Does Credit Karma Work? If Credit Karma is the only Intuit product you use and you see an Intuit charge, it came from a different Intuit product or it isn’t legitimate.

There’s one more possibility worth naming. QuickBooks Payments is a merchant processing service Intuit provides to small businesses. When a business uses QuickBooks to accept your credit card, an Intuit-related descriptor can end up on your statement for the purchase amount, even though you never bought Intuit software. If the charge matches something you actually paid a small business for, that’s likely what happened.

Why the Amount May Not Match What You Expected

People often investigate an Intuit charge because the number is off. Sales tax explains most of the gap. Many states tax digital software subscriptions, and combined state and local rates can add roughly 10% in some places. A $38 QuickBooks subscription can post at $41 or $42 depending on where you live.

Promotional pricing accounts for a lot of the rest. The 50%-off intro deals expire on a set date, and the jump to full price is what usually catches people off guard. A charge that doubled from one month to the next generally means the promo window closed. Payroll add-ons, extra user seats, and Mailchimp overage charges for larger email sends can also push a bill above the base rate.

Auto-renewal is the other big one. Free trials require a credit card upfront, and if you don’t cancel before the trial ends, billing starts automatically at the full subscription rate with no additional warning beyond the trial terms you originally agreed to. Annual subscriptions renew the same way. Someone who signed up a year ago and stopped using the software can see a $456 charge (the annual equivalent of the $38 Simple Start plan) hit the card without any recent activity in the product.

How to Look Up the Charge

Intuit runs a free Find a Charge tool that identifies which product and account generated a specific transaction. You’ll need three pieces of information: the card or bank account number the charge hit, the exact dollar amount, and the date it posted.4QuickBooks. Understand Intuit Charges on Your Credit Card or Bank Statement You don’t need an Order ID or an existing Intuit account. The tool covers QuickBooks Desktop, QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Self-Employed, QuickBooks Time, and several other Intuit products.

If the tool doesn’t return a match, check the email address on file with your bank. Intuit sends a billing confirmation each time a subscription fee is charged.4QuickBooks. Understand Intuit Charges on Your Credit Card or Bank Statement Search your inbox for messages from addresses ending in @intuit.com or @e.intuit.com. Nothing in the lookup tool and nothing in email is a red flag that the charge may be fraudulent.

How to Cancel or Get a Refund

If the charge is yours but you want to stop future ones, sign in to the Intuit Account Manager, open Products & billing, find the product, and follow the cancellation steps.5QuickBooks. Change or Cancel Your QuickBooks Online or Intuit Enterprise Suite Subscription Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period, so you keep access until the next renewal date. Payroll subscriptions cancel through Settings then Subscriptions and billing inside QuickBooks, or through the Intuit Account portal for desktop versions.6QuickBooks. For a charge that already posted, request a refund through Intuit’s support site. Refunds to a credit or debit card generally appear within 7 to 10 business days after processing. Refunds sent by electronic bank transfer take at least 10 business days.7QuickBooks. Request a Refund for Your Product Some products have their own refund windows. QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise, for instance, offers a 60-day money-back guarantee from signup, but canceling a monthly plan after those 60 days and before month 12 triggers a termination fee equal to the remaining months.8Intuit. Disputing a Charge You Didn’t Authorize

When the charge is genuinely unauthorized, federal law gives you tools to fight it. The rules depend on whether the charge hit a credit card or a debit card, and the debit card rules are stricter.

If It Hit a Credit Card

The Fair Credit Billing Act protects credit card holders against billing errors and unauthorized charges. You have 60 days from the date your card issuer sent the statement containing the error to submit a written dispute. Your notice must include your name and account number, state that a billing error exists and its dollar amount, and explain why you believe the charge is wrong. The creditor then has two full billing cycles, and no more than 90 days, to investigate and either correct the error or explain why the bill stands. During that investigation the creditor cannot try to collect the disputed amount or report it as delinquent.9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1666 – Correction of Billing Errors

If It Hit a Debit Card or Bank Account

Debit card charges and direct bank withdrawals fall under the Electronic Fund Transfer Act, implemented through Regulation E. The liability rules here are time-sensitive. Report an unauthorized transfer within two business days of learning about it, and your maximum liability is $50. Wait longer than two days but report within 60 days of receiving the statement, and your exposure rises to $500. Miss the 60-day window and you could lose everything taken after that deadline.10Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR 1005.6 – Liability of Consumer for Unauthorized Transfers Prompt statement review matters far more for debit cards than for credit cards.

Watch for Fake Intuit Invoices and Phishing

Scammers regularly impersonate Intuit with fake invoices, fake security alerts, and fake billing notices meant to harvest login credentials or payment information. Some fraudsters create Intuit accounts under stolen business names and generate real-looking QuickBooks invoices for services no one ordered.

Legitimate Intuit emails come only from addresses ending in @intuit.com, @e.intuit.com, or @eq.accountants.intuit.com, and every link in those emails points to a page within the intuit.com domain. Intuit will not ask by email for your password, banking details, Social Security number, or other sensitive information. Any message pressuring you to download a software update or click through to verify your account is almost certainly a scam. Forward suspicious messages to security@intuit.com and delete them.11Intuit. Identify Suspicious Activity, Phishing Scams, and Potential Fraud

If a charge you can’t identify has already posted and nothing turns up in the Find a Charge tool or your email, call your bank and dispute it. The sooner you report, the stronger your legal protection and the better your odds of getting the money back.
