Unemployment Deferment Request Form: Eligibility, Filing, and Interest

To file an unemployment deferment request form, download it from StudentAid.gov or your loan servicer’s site, complete the eligibility and personal information sections, attach proof of unemployment benefits if you’re collecting them, and send the package to your servicer by mail or through their online portal.1StudentAid.gov. Unemployment Deferment Request The form covers federal Direct Loans, FFEL Program loans, and Perkins Loans on a single document, and an approved request can pause your payments for up to 36 months total, granted in six-month blocks (twelve-month blocks for Perkins borrowers).

Check Whether You Qualify First

You qualify under one of two paths: you’re receiving unemployment benefits, or you’re actively looking for full-time work and can’t find it.2eCFR. 34 CFR 685.204 Full-time employment means at least 30 hours per week in a position expected to last at least three months,3eCFR. 34 CFR 682.210 so if your hours were cut to 20 or you’re in a temporary role, you can still be eligible even while technically employed.

Two traps to know about. If you turned down a full-time job offer because you considered it beneath your qualifications or pay level, you’re disqualified on Direct and FFEL loans. Perkins borrowers are not disqualified by that.1StudentAid.gov. Unemployment Deferment Request And if you’re job-hunting without collecting benefits, you must have registered with a public or private employment agency if one exists within 50 miles of where you live. You don’t need any prior work history to qualify. Someone who has never held a job can still get the deferment as long as they’re genuinely searching.

Gather Your Information and Documents

The Unemployment Deferment Request is a PDF available from your servicer’s website or from StudentAid.gov. Before you sit down with it, have this ready:

  • Your Social Security number, full legal name, current mailing address, phone, and email.
  • Your loan account number. If you have loans with more than one servicer, you’ll file a separate form with each.
  • The specific date you became unemployed or your hours dropped below 30 per week. This date matters because your deferment can be backdated up to six months before the servicer receives your form.

What you attach depends on which eligibility path you’re using. If you’re receiving unemployment benefits, attach documentation that shows your name, address, and Social Security number and confirms you’re eligible for benefits during the period you’re requesting deferment.1StudentAid.gov. Unemployment Deferment Request The form doesn’t dictate document types, so any official paperwork from your state workforce agency showing benefit eligibility should work.

If you’re job-hunting without benefits, the initial request runs on self-certification. You check the appropriate boxes on the form, confirm your registration with an employment agency where required, and sign. Extension requests add one more certification: that you made at least six serious attempts to find full-time work during the preceding six months.2eCFR. 34 CFR 685.204

Complete and Submit the Form

The form itself is short. Section 1 collects your personal information. Section 2 walks through eligibility questions in order and, depending on your answers, tells you whether to continue or stop. Section 3 is where you formally request the deferment and enter the date your unemployment started. Section 4 covers submission instructions.

Two details worth being careful about. Every document you attach should include your name and account number. And the form warns that false statements carry penalties including fines and imprisonment under the U.S. Criminal Code.4U.S. Department of Education. Unemployment Deferment Request Form Read the certifications before you sign.

Send the completed form and attachments to your loan servicer at the address in Section 6. Many servicers also accept uploads through their online account portal. If you mail it, certified mail with a return receipt gives you proof of the date the servicer received your package. Keep a copy of everything you send.

What Happens After You Submit

Your servicer reviews the application and notifies you of approval or denial. There’s no published processing timeline, but reviews typically take a few weeks. Keep making your scheduled payments during that window. The deferment isn’t in effect just because you mailed the form, and if you stop paying before approval and the request is denied or delayed, you’ll face late fees and possible negative credit reporting.

When approved, your servicer adjusts your loan status and applies the deferment retroactively to the date you specified, or up to six months before the servicer received your request, whichever is later.2eCFR. 34 CFR 685.204 Because of that retroactive effective date, you may receive a refund for payments you made after the deferment start date.

As the six-month period ends, you’ll need to reapply if you’re still unemployed. Same form, same process, with the six-attempts certification added if you’re not on benefits. You also have to notify your servicer as soon as you find full-time work, because the deferment ends at that point and repayment resumes.1StudentAid.gov. Unemployment Deferment Request

Know What the Deferment Costs You in Interest

Deferment pauses your required payments. It does not always pause interest. Whether interest accrues depends on your loan type:

  • Interest is not charged to you on Direct Subsidized Loans, Subsidized Federal Stafford Loans, Federal Perkins Loans, and the subsidized portion of consolidation loans.
  • Interest continues to accrue on Direct Unsubsidized Loans, Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans, Direct PLUS Loans, FFEL PLUS Loans, and the unsubsidized portion of consolidation loans.

Where interest accrues, you can either pay it as it builds or let it accumulate and be capitalized (added to your principal) when the deferment ends. Capitalization means you’ll owe interest on a larger principal going forward, which increases your total repayment cost. Most servicers will accept interest-only payments while your required payments are paused, and doing so prevents capitalization. Perkins Loans are the exception on this point: unpaid interest never capitalizes on a Perkins Loan.5StudentAid.gov. Student Loan Deferment

Consider Income-Driven Repayment Before You File

Before you file the deferment request, check whether an income-driven repayment plan would fit your situation better. If your income has dropped to zero or near it, an IDR plan would calculate your monthly payment at $0. The immediate cash flow is the same as deferment. The background is different.

Months at $0 under an IDR plan count toward the 20- or 25-year forgiveness timeline. Months in deferment do not. If you’re working toward IDR forgiveness, every month of deferment is a month that doesn’t count. The same applies to Public Service Loan Forgiveness: deferment months generally don’t count toward the 120 qualifying payments required for PSLF.6StudentAid.gov. Public Service Loan Forgiveness FAQs If you’re in public service, staying on an IDR plan at $0 keeps the PSLF clock running while deferment pauses it.

The tradeoff is paperwork. IDR requires a separate application and annual income recertification. Deferment is simpler to request and doesn’t require ongoing income documentation. If forgiveness isn’t part of your plan and you just need a few months of breathing room, deferment is the faster option. If forgiveness is part of your plan, the extra IDR paperwork is almost certainly worth it.

Perkins Borrowers Use the Same Form With Different Rules

Federal Perkins Loans (no new ones have been issued since 2017, but many borrowers still carry them) use the same Unemployment Deferment Request form. Section 2 includes instructions telling Perkins borrowers to continue past answers that would stop Direct and FFEL borrowers.1StudentAid.gov. Unemployment Deferment Request Perkins deferment runs in 12-month blocks rather than six, doesn’t require the diligent-search certification or the employment agency registration, and isn’t disqualified by turning down a job you considered beneath your qualifications. Perkins Loans are serviced by the school that issued them rather than the major federal servicers, so send your form to your school’s loan office.

Private Loans Are Not Covered

The Unemployment Deferment Request form applies only to federal student loans. If you also carry private loans, contact each private lender separately. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau notes that private lenders may offer deferment or forbearance, but the terms vary widely and are generally less favorable than federal programs.7Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Is Forbearance or Deferment Available for Private Student Loans There’s no standardized form and no guaranteed right to pause payments. Interest almost always continues accruing during any private loan pause.
