UK Gambling Tax: What Players and Operators Pay

In the United Kingdom, gambling tax falls on the operator, not the player. If you place the bet, you owe HMRC nothing on what you win, whether it’s a few pounds on a football accumulator or a lottery jackpot. If you take the bet as a licensed business, you pay one of several duties on your gross profits, and some of those rates changed sharply in April 2026.

Players Pay No Tax on Winnings

There is no income tax, no capital gains tax, and no other personal tax on gambling winnings in the UK. HMRC’s own guidance states that “betting and gambling, as such, do not constitute trading,” which puts winnings outside the tax net entirely.1HM Revenue & Customs. Business Income Manual – BIM22015 – Meaning of Trade: Exceptions and Alternatives: Betting and Gambling – Introduction You don’t declare winnings on a Self Assessment return, and no bookmaker or casino withholds tax from a payout.

This covers every form of gambling offered by licensed operators: sports betting, casino games, poker, bingo, lotteries, slot machines. The duty is built into the operator’s cost of doing business. From the player’s side, the price shown is the price paid, and the winnings received are yours in full.

Does It Change If You Gamble for a Living?

No. Professional gamblers get the same tax-free treatment as casual players. The point was settled in Graham v Green in 1925, when a court ruled that even systematic, skilful gambling does not amount to a taxable trade. HMRC still cites the case, and the principle has held for a century.2HM Revenue & Customs. Financial Spread Betting

Spread betting on financial markets sits in the same tax-free category for individuals. Because you never buy or sell the underlying asset, HMRC treats it as speculative gambling rather than investment. No chargeable gain or allowable loss arises, so capital gains tax does not apply.3HM Revenue & Customs. Capital Gains Manual – CG56105 – Financial Spread Betting Stamp duty is also avoided, since no shares change hands. The only theoretical exception is a spread betting operation genuinely structured and run as a business, which is rare in practice.1HM Revenue & Customs. What Operators Pay

Operators face a set of duties that vary by product and by whether the gambling is remote or land-based. The Gambling Commission licenses commercial gambling in Great Britain; HMRC collects the duties.4Gambling Commission. Delivering Our Objectives and Duties The Autumn Budget 2025 brought the largest set of rate changes in years, with most taking effect from 1 April 2026.

Remote Gaming Duty

Online casino games, poker, virtual slots, and digital bingo are covered by Remote Gaming Duty. The Finance Act 2014 made this a point-of-consumption tax, so any operator serving UK customers pays it regardless of where the company is based.5Legislation.gov.uk. Finance Act 2014 – Chapter 3 Remote Gaming Duty An operator in Gibraltar or Malta owes the same duty as one in London.

From 1 April 2026, the rate rose from 21% to 40% of gross gaming profits.6HM Revenue & Customs. Gambling Duty Changes Gross gaming profits are total stakes minus total winnings paid out. Where the calculation produces a loss in an accounting period, that loss can be carried forward to reduce profits later.7HM Revenue & Customs. Remote Gaming Duty (Excise Notice 455a)

General Betting Duty

Fixed-odds sports and horse racing bets placed in high street bookmakers, racecourse stalls, and self-service betting terminals on licensed premises are charged General Betting Duty at 15% of the bookmaker’s gross profits, on the same stakes-minus-winnings basis.6HM Revenue & Customs. The 15% rate also applies to remote sports betting through 31 March 2027. From April 2027, a new 25% rate applies to remote general bets. Bets on UK horse racing stay at 15%, because operators already contribute 10% of those stakes toward the statutory Horserace Betting Levy.6HM Revenue & Customs. Gambling Duty Changes

Gaming Duty for Land-Based Casinos

Physical casinos pay Gaming Duty on their gross gaming yield from table games such as blackjack, roulette, and poker. Unlike the flat-rate duties on betting, this one uses a graduated band system where higher profits are taxed at steeper rates. For accounting periods beginning on or after 1 April 2026, the bands are:9GOV.UK. Excise Duty — Gambling Duty Rates

Small society lotteries run by charities or community groups are exempt provided they stay under limits set by the Gambling Act 2005: no more than £20,000 in ticket sales per individual lottery, no more than £250,000 in aggregate annual ticket sales, and a maximum single prize of £25,000. Exceeding those limits requires a Gambling Commission licence and full Lottery Duty.

Pool Betting Duty

Pool betting, where stakes are pooled and winnings paid from the pot, is charged at 15% on the promoter’s net pool betting receipts.9GOV.UK. Excise Duty — Gambling Duty Rates Football pools and Tote betting on horse racing are the common examples.

Bingo Duty Abolished

Bingo Duty was abolished entirely from 1 April 2026. Land-based bingo halls and their players no longer face any bingo-specific duty.6HM Revenue & Customs. Gambling Duty Changes Online bingo still falls under Remote Gaming Duty at 40%.

If You’re American, Your Home Tax Still Applies

US citizens and residents who gamble in the UK face a different picture back home. The IRS treats all gambling winnings as fully taxable income, including money won abroad. An American who wins at a UK casino, sportsbook, or online platform must report those winnings on Schedule 1 of Form 1040, even though no UK tax was withheld.12Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 419, Gambling Income and Losses

Losses can be deducted against winnings, but only if you itemize on Schedule A, and never beyond the amount of gambling income reported. Keep detailed records of each session: dates, locations, and amounts won or lost. Receipts, betting slips, and account statements from UK operators serve as valid documentation. Large or unexpected winnings can also trigger estimated tax obligations during the year rather than at filing time.12Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 419, Gambling Income and Losses
