If you drive for Uber and expect to owe at least $1,000 in federal tax for the year, you have to send the IRS quarterly estimated tax payments covering both income tax and self-employment tax on your driving profit.1Internal Revenue Service. Estimated Taxes Uber quarterly taxes exist because Uber classifies you as an independent contractor and withholds nothing from your earnings; the IRS wants its share throughout the year, not in one check next April. Miss a payment and you’ll pay a penalty plus interest, currently running at 7% a year.2Internal Revenue Service. Interest Rates Remain the Same for the First Quarter of 2026
Who Has to Pay
The trigger is simple: if you’ll owe $1,000 or more in federal tax after subtracting any withholding and refundable credits, you’re on the hook for quarterly payments.1Internal Revenue Service. Estimated Taxes For most full-time or serious part-time Uber drivers, that threshold is easy to clear once self-employment tax enters the picture.
At a regular job, your employer takes federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare out of each paycheck. Uber doesn’t.3Internal Revenue Service. Independent Contractor (Self-Employed) or Employee At year-end you’ll get a 1099-K showing gross on-trip earnings (if you crossed $20,000 and 200 transactions) and possibly a 1099-NEC for referral and promotion income of $600 or more.4Internal Revenue Service. IRS Issues FAQs on Form 1099-K Threshold Under the One, Big, Beautiful Bill Those forms are information reports. You owe tax on every dollar you earned, whether or not Uber had to issue a form.
2026 Payment Due Dates
Four deadlines, each covering a specific slice of the year:5Internal Revenue Service. Estimated Tax for Individuals
- April 15, 2026 — income earned January 1 through March 31
- June 15, 2026 — income earned April 1 through May 31
- September 15, 2026 — income earned June 1 through August 31
- January 15, 2027 — income earned September 1 through December 31
The second period is only two months while the third is three. All four 2026 deadlines fall on weekdays, so none shift.6Internal Revenue Service. Publication 509 (2026), Tax Calendars If you start driving mid-year, you still owe the next scheduled payment; you don’t get to wait and settle up in April without a penalty.
How Much to Pay Each Quarter
Your quarterly amount is based on net profit, not gross fares. Estimate your annual Uber income, subtract your business expenses, and run the result through two separate tax calculations.
Self-Employment Tax
This is the piece that catches new drivers off guard. Because you’re both employer and employee, you pay both halves of Social Security and Medicare: 12.4% + 2.9%, for a combined rate of 15.3%.7Internal Revenue Service. Self-Employment Tax (Social Security and Medicare Taxes) You apply that 15.3% to 92.35% of your net profit.8Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 554, Self-Employment Tax The 12.4% Social Security piece applies only to earnings up to $184,500 in 2026; the Medicare portion has no cap.9Social Security Administration. Contribution and Benefit Base
You get to deduct half of your self-employment tax when you figure your adjusted gross income, which lowers the income tax side.8Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 554, Self-Employment Tax
Income Tax
After subtracting half your self-employment tax, your standard deduction ($16,100 for single filers in 2026), and the qualified business income deduction, apply the 2026 brackets. For single filers, the first $12,400 is taxed at 10%, $12,401 to $50,400 at 12%, and $50,401 to $105,700 at 22%, with higher brackets above that.10Internal Revenue Service. IRS Releases Tax Inflation Adjustments for Tax Year 2026, Including Amendments From the One, Big, Beautiful Bill
Add self-employment tax and income tax. Divide by four. That’s your quarterly payment. Form 1040-ES has worksheets that walk through the full calculation, and most tax software handles it automatically.1Internal Revenue Service. Estimated Taxes
A Worked Example
Say you expect $50,000 in gross Uber income and $18,000 in deductions, mostly mileage. Net profit: $32,000. Self-employment tax: about $4,523 (92.35% × $32,000 × 15.3%). Half of that, $2,262, reduces your adjusted gross income. After the $16,100 standard deduction and a QBI deduction of up to $6,400, your federal taxable income falls substantially. Total federal tax might land around $6,000 to $7,000, or roughly $1,500 to $1,750 a quarter, depending on filing status and other income.
Deductions That Shrink the Payment
Every dollar of legitimate business expense cuts both your income tax and your self-employment tax. Tracking matters.
Vehicle Expenses
Pick one of two methods and stick with it for the year. The standard mileage rate for 2026 is 72.5 cents per mile.11Internal Revenue Service. The Standard Mileage Rates and Maximum Automobile Fair Market Values Have Been Updated for 2026 Twenty thousand business miles comes to a $14,500 deduction. The rate covers gas, insurance, maintenance, and depreciation, so you don’t deduct those separately. You do need a contemporaneous log showing date, destination, business purpose, and miles. Start tracking the moment you turn the app on, not just when a passenger is in the car.
The actual expense method requires receipts for fuel, oil, tires, repairs, registration, insurance, and depreciation or lease payments. You deduct the business-use percentage of each. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act restored 100% bonus depreciation for qualifying property placed in service after January 19, 2025, which can allow a first-year writeoff of the business-use portion of a vehicle’s cost under this method.
Other Common Expenses
- Uber’s service fees and commissions taken out of your fares
- The business-use share of your cell phone bill, plus mounts and chargers
- Rider amenities like water, snacks, and charging cables
- Tolls and parking fees paid while driving
Qualified Business Income Deduction
Most drivers qualify for the Section 199A deduction, which takes up to 20% off qualified business income on your personal return. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act made it permanent. On $30,000 of net Uber profit, that’s up to $6,000 off your taxable income. Phaseouts kick in at higher income levels that most drivers won’t reach from driving alone.
Retirement Contributions
Contributing to a self-employed retirement plan directly lowers the income you base quarterly payments on. A SEP-IRA takes up to 25% of net self-employment earnings, capped at $72,000 for 2026.12Internal Revenue Service. SEP Contribution Limits (Including Grandfathered SARSEPs) A Solo 401(k) allows $24,500 in employee deferrals for 2026 (plus $8,000 catch-up at 50+), on top of employer contributions up to 25% of net self-employment income, with a combined cap of $72,000 or $80,000 at 50+. Factor contributions into your quarterly estimate and the savings show up each quarter rather than only at filing.
Safe Harbor: How to Avoid a Penalty Even if You Underestimate
Guessing a year of fluctuating gig income is imprecise, and the IRS builds in two safe harbors. Hit either and no underpayment penalty applies, even if you still owe money in April:13Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6654 – Failure by Individual to Pay Estimated Income Tax
- Your payments total at least 90% of what you actually owe for 2026, or
- Your payments total at least 100% of the tax shown on your 2025 return.
The prior-year number is the easier target because you already know it. If your prior-year adjusted gross income topped $150,000 ($75,000 if married filing separately), the threshold rises to 110% of last year’s tax.13Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6654 – Failure by Individual to Pay Estimated Income Tax
How to Send the Payment
Several options, all tied to Form 1040-ES as the underlying form:
- IRS Direct Pay. Free bank transfer, no registration. Choose “Estimated Tax” as the reason and “1040-ES” as the form.14Internal Revenue Service. Direct Pay With Bank Account
- IRS Online Account. The portal lets you make payments and view your balance. The IRS now steers individual taxpayers here instead of EFTPS, which no longer accepts new individual enrollments.15Internal Revenue Service. EFTPS – The Electronic Federal Tax Payment System
- Mail. Send a check or money order with a 1040-ES voucher that identifies the tax period. Keep copies; there’s no instant confirmation.
- Tax software. Most programs can calculate and transmit federal and state estimated payments.
The W-2 Withholding Shortcut
If you also work a W-2 job, you can skip quarterly payments entirely by raising the withholding at that job to cover your Uber liability. File a new Form W-4 with your employer and use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator to pick the amount.16Internal Revenue Service. Manage Taxes for Your Gig Work W-2 withholding is treated as paid evenly across the year even if you increase it in October, which rescues drivers who fell behind on quarterly deadlines.
State Payments Are Separate
Federal estimated taxes don’t cover state tax. If your state has an income tax, you likely owe state quarterly payments too, with their own thresholds and schedules that often mirror the federal dates but not always. Check your state revenue department for amounts, deadlines, and whether it imposes its own underpayment penalty. Drivers in states without an income tax, like Texas and Florida, can skip this.
Mistakes That Trigger Penalties
Forgetting self-employment tax is the big one. New drivers estimate payments off the income tax brackets alone and get hit with a surprise 15.3% they never set aside. For drivers earning under $50,000, self-employment tax often exceeds income tax.
Not logging mileage from day one is the second. The IRS wants records kept at or near the time of each trip. Reconstructing a year from memory produces a weaker deduction and crumbles in an audit. A tracking app running every time you’re online solves both problems.
Skipping a payment because you started mid-year is the third. If you begin driving in February and will clear $1,000 in tax for the year, your first payment is due April 15. Waiting to pay at filing time generates penalties for every quarter you missed, even if the final bill is paid in full.
