An “Uber BV” charge on your credit card is a payment processed through Uber B.V., the Dutch subsidiary that handles billing for Uber rides, Uber Eats orders, and Uber One subscriptions across much of the world outside the United States. It usually reflects something you recognize once you check the app: a completed trip, a delivery, a subscription fee, or a temporary authorization hold that will drop off in a few days. When it doesn’t match anything you did, the likely explanations are a shared account, a forgotten free trial that converted, or fraud on your account or card.
Why the Merchant Name Shows Uber BV
Uber routes a large share of its global transactions through entities registered in the Netherlands. Uber B.V. is a limited liability company incorporated in Amsterdam.1Uber. VTC Transport Services A related entity, Uber Payments B.V., is licensed as an electronic money institution supervised by De Nederlandsche Bank and processes cross-border payments in more than two dozen countries, including Germany, France, Spain, Italy, and Sweden.2De Nederlandsche Bank. Uber Payments B.V. – Public Register
Because those Dutch entities sit between riders and drivers in the payment flow, card statements often display “Uber BV” or “Uber Payments BV” as the merchant name rather than a local Uber brand. The label itself doesn’t tell you what the charge was for. That’s why the first step is always to open the app.
The Everyday Explanations
Pending Authorization Holds
When you request a trip or add a new payment method, Uber places a temporary hold on the card to verify it works. These are typically small amounts like £1, £2, or £5, or an amount up to the estimated fare.3Uber. Why Is There a Pending Charge on My Account Uber says the hold is voided immediately when a trip is cancelled, but the pending line can linger on your statement for several days depending on the bank, and some banks show it for up to ten days.4Uber. My Account Has an Unrecognized Charge No money leaves your account once the hold clears.
Someone Else on the Account
Uber says many unrecognized charges turn out to be rides or Eats orders placed by a friend, family member, or co-worker who has access to the account or whose device still has the card saved.5Uber. My Account Has an Unrecognized Charge Checking the trip and order history is the fastest way to rule this out.
Uber One Subscription Fees
Uber One charges €5.99 per month or €59.99 per year in European markets, and $9.99 per month or $96 per year in the U.S.4Uber. My Account Has an Unrecognized Charge6New York Attorney General. Fare Adjustments, Tips, and Cancellation Fees
A charge that appears after a trip may reflect an updated fare if the route changed, a tip added by the rider after the ride, or a cancellation fee for a ride you booked and then cancelled.5Uber. My Account Has an Unrecognized Charge
When the Charge Is Fraud
Not every mysterious Uber BV charge has an innocent explanation. Documented fraud fits two patterns: someone else logged into your Uber account, or someone used your card number to test or make purchases without any account of yours involved.
A 2016 Guardian investigation found hacked Uber account credentials selling on dark-web marketplaces for as little as $16.50 for 20 accounts. Criminals used those accounts to book rides in cities like New York, Guadalajara, and Aguascalientes, charging the trips to the real cardholder. One victim was billed roughly $600 for three rides around Manhattan; another saw five trips and eleven cancelled ride requests in Mexico charged to her account.7The Guardian. Uber Scam: Hacking Accounts and Phantom Journeys Trend Micro data from the same period showed stolen Uber credentials averaging $3.78 per account, more than U.S. credit card numbers, which sold in bundles for no more than 22 cents each.8CNBC. Stolen Uber Accounts Worth More Than Stolen Credit Cards
Some people who had never created an Uber account at all still saw Uber BV charges on their statements. Neil Gallagher reported three unauthorized transactions totaling £76.25 despite never having used the service. Uber said it had “no evidence of a breach at Uber” and attributed the problem to credential stuffing, where reused passwords let attackers log in after a breach on another site.7The Guardian. Uber Scam: Hacking Accounts and Phantom Journeys Small unauthorized charges can also be a sign of card-testing fraud, where criminals run low-value transactions to confirm a stolen card number works before attempting larger purchases.9Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. What to Do About It
Check the Uber App
Open the app and review trip and order history. Look for fare adjustments, cancellation fees, and tips that might account for the amount. If the charge shows as “pending,” it’s likely an authorization hold that will drop within a few days to a week.3Uber. Why Is There a Pending Charge on My Account Also check whether anyone with access to your account or a shared card placed the order.
Report It to Uber
If nothing in your history matches, use Uber’s “My account has an unrecognized charge” form. You’ll need the charge amount and date, the first six and last four digits of the card (or the email tied to your PayPal or Venmo), and a screenshot showing your name, the bank’s name, and the transaction date.5Uber. My Account Has an Unrecognized Charge After you submit, Uber sends an automated email asking you to confirm your address before a support agent reviews the case.4Uber. Secure Your Account
If your history shows trips or receipts for rides you didn’t take, or a driver calls about a pickup you never booked, change your password immediately through the app’s security settings or at account.uber.com/security.10Uber. My Account Has a Charge From Someone Else Turn on two-step verification, which requires a one-time code in addition to your password.11Uber. Strong Customer Authentication If you can’t sign in at all, use the “I think my account was hacked” form to give Uber your email, phone number, and the last four digits of the card so support can lock the account.12Uber. Dispute the Charge With Your Bank
If Uber’s process doesn’t resolve it, or if the charge is clearly fraudulent, contact your card issuer. Under the Fair Credit Billing Act, your liability for unauthorized credit card charges is capped at $50, and you have 60 days from the date the statement containing the error was sent to submit a written dispute. The issuer must acknowledge your complaint within 30 days and resolve it within 90. While the dispute is open, the issuer cannot report you as delinquent or take collection action on the disputed amount.13Federal Trade Commission. If the Charge Is an Uber One Subscription
Subscription charges deserve extra attention right now. On December 15, 2025, the Federal Trade Commission, 21 state attorneys general, and the District of Columbia filed an amended complaint against Uber Technologies, Inc. and Uber USA, LLC in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, alleging deceptive billing and cancellation practices related to Uber One.14Federal Trade Commission. FTC, States File Amended Complaint Against Uber for Deceptive Billing and Cancellation Practices
The complaint alleges that consumers were enrolled in Uber One without their knowledge or consent, charged before their stated billing dates, and billed after free trials ended without adequate notice.14Federal Trade Commission. FTC, States File Amended Complaint Against Uber for Deceptive Billing and Cancellation Practices The FTC alleges that users attempting to cancel within 48 hours of a billing date could be forced to navigate up to 23 screens and perform as many as 32 separate actions. As of September 2024, Uber had enrolled more than 28.7 million consumers in Uber One, generating about $935 million in gross subscription revenue over a two-year period.6New York Attorney General. If your unrecognized Uber BV charge turns out to be an Uber One fee you never knowingly signed up for, cancel the subscription inside the app, then follow the dispute steps above with Uber and, if needed, your bank.
