U.S. Treasury Deposit Dates: Social Security, VA, and Tax Refunds

U.S. Treasury deposit dates follow a predictable pattern once you know which federal payment you’re tracking. Social Security, SSI, VA benefits, federal retirement annuities, and railroad retirement each have their own scheduled day of the month, and the same weekend-and-holiday rule applies to all of them: if the scheduled date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday, the deposit moves to the preceding business day. Tax refunds work differently and depend on how you filed.

The Weekend and Holiday Shift Rule

The ACH network does not settle transactions on non-business days, so Treasury moves payments earlier rather than later. Federal holidays that can pull a deposit forward include New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.1U.S. General Services Administration. 2026 Payroll Calendar

New Year’s Day is the one that reshuffles the most payment types at once, because SSI, VA compensation, OPM annuities, and railroad retirement are all normally paid on or around the first of the month. When January 1 lands on a weekday holiday, all four move to the last business day of December.

Federal rules require banks to make direct deposits available on the same day the bank receives the funds.2eCFR. Part 229 Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks (Regulation CC) In practice, most recipients see their money early in the morning on the scheduled date. Some banks post a day or two early as a competitive perk, but that’s a choice by your bank, not a Treasury commitment.

Social Security and SSI Deposit Dates

Social Security and Supplemental Security Income run on separate schedules.

SSI

SSI is deposited on the first of every month. If the first is a weekend or federal holiday, the payment shifts to the last business day of the prior month.3Social Security Administration. Retirement, Survivor, and Disability Benefits

Standard Social Security benefits (including SSDI) are paid on one of three Wednesdays each month, based on your birth date:3Social Security Administration. Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments 2026

  • Born 1st through 10th: second Wednesday of the month
  • Born 11th through 20th: third Wednesday
  • Born 21st through 31st: fourth Wednesday

Because these dates always fall on a Wednesday, they rarely collide with federal holidays. When they do, the payment arrives on the preceding business day.

The Third-of-the-Month Exception

Two groups don’t follow the Wednesday schedule. If you started receiving Social Security before May 1997, your benefit still arrives on the third of each month.4Social Security Administration. Paying Monthly Benefits The same third-of-the-month rule applies if you receive both Social Security and SSI. In that case, SSI arrives on the first and Social Security on the third.3Social Security Administration. Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments 2026

VA Compensation and Pension Deposit Dates

VA disability compensation, pension, survivor benefits, and Dependency and Indemnity Compensation follow one cycle: benefits for a given month are deposited on the first business day of the following month. Your March entitlement, for example, arrives on the first business day of April. If that day is a weekend or federal holiday, the payment shifts to the last business day of the prior month.

VA education benefits, including GI Bill housing allowances, run on a different timeline tied to enrollment certification and are not part of this monthly cycle.

Railroad Retirement Deposit Dates

Railroad retirement annuities are deposited on the first business day of each month.5Railroad Retirement Board. Railroad Retirement Monthly Annuity Payment Dates Each payment covers the prior month’s entitlement. The 2026 dates are:

  • January: Friday, January 2
  • February: Monday, February 2
  • March: Monday, March 2
  • April: Wednesday, April 1
  • May: Friday, May 1
  • June: Monday, June 1
  • July: Wednesday, July 1
  • August: Monday, August 3
  • September: Tuesday, September 1
  • October: Thursday, October 1
  • November: Monday, November 2
  • December: Tuesday, December 1

OPM Federal Retirement Annuities

The Office of Personnel Management pays annuities under both the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) and the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) on the first business day of each month, with each payment covering the prior month. Benefits accrued in December 2025 were payable on January 2, 2026.6U.S. Office of Personnel Management. Annuity Payments

Active federal employee wages and military pay run on separate biweekly or monthly schedules set by each employing agency, not by OPM.

Federal Tax Refund Timing

Tax refunds don’t attach to a fixed calendar date. The timeline depends on how you filed and whether the IRS flags anything for review. E-filers who choose direct deposit typically see their refund in fewer than 21 days after the IRS accepts the return.7Internal Revenue Service. Direct Deposit Fastest Way to Receive Federal Tax Refund Paper returns take significantly longer, often six to eight weeks or more.

You can check status through the IRS “Where’s My Refund?” tool on IRS.gov or the IRS2Go app. The tool updates once per day, usually overnight. For e-filed returns, status appears within 24 hours of acceptance. For paper returns, expect about four weeks before any status shows.7Internal Revenue Service. The February 15 Hold for EITC and ACTC

If you claim the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit, the IRS is required by law to hold your entire refund until at least February 15, regardless of how early you file.8Internal Revenue Service. Interest on Late Refunds

When the IRS takes longer than 45 days after your filing deadline (or 45 days after you actually filed, if you filed late) to issue a refund, it owes you interest on the overpayment.10Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6611 – Interest on Overpayments The individual overpayment rate was 7% per year, compounded daily, for the first quarter of 2026,11Internal Revenue Service. Interest Rates Remain the Same for the First Quarter of 2026 and dropped to 6% for the second quarter beginning April 1, 2026.12Internal Revenue Service. Why a Payment May Arrive Smaller Than Expected

Even a payment that lands on time can arrive short. The Treasury Offset Program lets the Bureau of the Fiscal Service intercept federal payments to collect delinquent debts: past-due federal taxes, defaulted federal student loans and other nontax debts, unpaid child support, and state income tax or unemployment insurance debts.13Bureau of the Fiscal Service. Treasury Offset Program Summary of Program Rules and Requirements Fact Sheet

How much can be taken depends on the payment:

  • Tax refunds: up to 100% for any qualifying debt
  • Social Security benefits: up to 15% for federal tax and nontax debts
  • OPM retirement annuities: up to 25% for federal nontax debts, up to 15% for federal tax debts
  • Federal salary: up to 15% for tax and nontax debts, and up to 50–65% for child support

Before an offset happens, the creditor agency must send written notice, generally at least 60 days in advance for most nontax debts and at least 30 days for child support, giving you a chance to dispute the debt or arrange repayment.14eCFR. Subpart A Disbursing Official Offset

If Your Payment Doesn’t Arrive

A deposit that doesn’t post on the scheduled date is not always a problem. Banks sometimes post federal payments a few hours late. The Social Security Administration advises waiting three additional business days beyond the expected date before reporting nonreceipt.15Social Security Administration. Processing Reports of Nonreceipt, Loss, Theft, or Destruction of Payments

After that window:

  • Social Security or SSI: call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 with your claim number and bank account details ready.
  • VA benefits: call the VA at 1-800-827-1000.
  • OPM annuities: call the retirement information line at 1-888-767-6738.
  • Railroad retirement: call the RRB at 1-877-772-5772.

For a tax refund the IRS shows as issued but that never arrived, you can request a refund trace by calling the IRS or submitting Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund.16Internal Revenue Service. 21.4.2 Refund Trace and Limited Payability Direct deposit traces can often be started over the phone. Paper check traces usually require the form, and on joint returns both spouses must sign. The trace itself takes several weeks, so report a missing refund as soon as you’re sure it should have arrived.
